Summary
Lonely wildlife rescue volunteer Stede Bonnet spends his weekends wandering Western Australia's beautiful South Coast beaches looking out for birds in need of rescue. He gets more than he bargained for this weekend when he stumbles across an Antarctic emperor penguin that's ended up several thousand kilometres from home.
His new friend (soon to be nemesis) needs more expert care than he can provide, but he's five hours from the city and clueless. Thankfully, the zoo's penguin expert Edward Teach answers his call and comes down to rescue them both, in more ways than one.

Honestly, Stede had no control over how he had ended up in the situation: having to kiss Ed as a result of a lost wager with the crew. But he can’t, hand on heart, say that he regrets it. It may even prove to be the spark that ignites a much brighter future for himself, and hopefully for - with - Ed as well. If he can just work out how best to stoke that intriguing fire…
“Kiss! Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!“
The chant, with its rich harmonies of multiple voices, rolls, inexorable as a tidal wave, across the twilight deck.
Oh good God. And things had all been going so well.
Stede stands, stiff and mortified, doing his best to ignore where he can make out Ed in his peripheral vision. Ed, standing next to Stede and calmly watching him, his face still, his arms folded across his chest.
If only he hadn’t argued with Lucius, none of this would be happening. He wouldn’t be about to make an absolute fool of himself whilst also, more importantly, humiliating Ed in the process as well. Not that Ed looks humiliated. In fact, Stede could swear that there is a hint of a smirk lurking under that luscious beard.

It's hot. It’s so fucking hot. Ed’s never known it to be so hot. Without the benefit of the sharp winds over the water, it’s still, stagnant, muggy and oppressive and endless. But he can cope with the heat.
What he can’t cope with is Stede, lifting his arms to wield his axe, his biceps flexing, and showing off two dark damp patches on the fabric of his shirt that grow and grow as the sun gets higher in the sky. He gulps down water, and Ed watches drops of sweat trickle over his temple and curl under his jaw, and he’s transfixed by it.
