Summary
Sometimes he wonders, though, about what life might’ve been if he had been able to be Mike the Brave instead of Mike the Oblivious. But it worked out for Will in the end, hadn’t it? He moved on.
Will moved on, but as the years go by, Mike is less and less sure that he did.

Summary
“Mike. You have not eaten since this morning,” he says, not a question. “Haven't you?”
Michael does not answer at once. Dustin, mercifully, is too occupied to notice, halfway through devouring his potatoes, cabbage forgotten at his side. Holly hums quietly over her stew, content. “It is of no matter,” Michael says at last.
“You should eat,” Will says softly. “Why haven't you?”
“I am well.”
“That was not my question.”
Michael’s gaze flickers to him, something unreadable passing through it, then warming, just slightly. “Cleric,” he says, low, as though the word itself were an answer.
Will exhales, quiet. “You cannot tend to others if you do not tend to yourself.”
“I manage,” Michael murmurs.
“You endure,” Will corrects, saddened. “That is not the same, and you know it.”

Summary
“Why do you choose to keep breaking me like this?”
Will grabs his own face desperately, eyebrows lifting almost hyperbolically. “What are you talking about?!”
“After I–“ Mike runs both hands through his soaked hair, pacing once like he’s unravelling. “After I said all that. After I told you– After my letter– do you really have the nerve to–“
Will doesn't let him finish, words landing heavy.
“… What letter?”
Mike stops pacing. His face drains in a second. He doesn’t answer.
There's a new possibility. A terrible one.
“Mike,” Will steps closer, searching desperately for his face instead of fighting it. “What letter?”

Summary
And maybe it’s the way the streetlights flicker, or the way the town is too quiet, but Will suddenly feels the weight of everything pressing in on him again. The truth clawing at his throat. The things he wants to say but can’t.
He takes a breath.
“Mike.”
Mike turns to him immediately, eyes sharp, attentive.
Will grips his own wrist, fingers digging into his skin. He hesitates—just for a second—before finally, barely above a whisper, he asks:
“Can—” He swallows hard. “Can you promise me something?”

Summary
Will raises his eyebrows. “Is that why you came in here?” he repeats, looking back down at the blue flannel. “To ask me about the weather in Lenora?”
“Kind of,” Mike says, and then, “well no, not about the weather specifically. I just– I wanted to talk to you.”
“Oh.” And Will looks a lot more surprised at this, actually, than the idea that Mike might have just wanted to come to his room to make small talk about unseasonably frigid California winters. “Okay. What about?”
“Anything.” The response is embarrassingly immediate. “Everything. I don’t know. I missed you.”
Hawkins, 1986. The world is ending, there are too many people in Mike's house, and to top it all off, he and Will have some things to talk through.

Summary
Sometimes, even this close, always in the same space, Mike feels like there’s a want inside him that aches so much, like Will is somehow going to drift away if he doesn’t reach out and latch onto him. He’s clingy, he’s gross, and the world has already ended and somehow pieced itself back together.
Maybe Mike deserves to be clingy and gross and a little, a lot, in love.
--
Or, Mike and Will have their first kiss during the end of the world. Kissing a second time, when everything is finally back to normal, takes a lot more courage.
