Summary
John Grey and Jamie Fraser have been friends for two decades, without John ever saying what they both know: his desire hasn’t faded. Now, John has designated the hunt they have embarked on as his last chance. Their days alone in the forest will give him a chance to react to the faint signals he has detected from Jamie lately. His vain hope has most likely deceived him, but he is prepared to suffer a thorough thrashing for any wrongful presumptions. At least he will know and can summon the courage to let Jamie go.
When the men have been away for several days in the vast forest, Claire Fraser understands that they have had an accident. She sets out to rescue them. Meanwhile, John and Jamie are stranded on a remote beach and, due to injuries, unable to get home. In his horror at almost losing John in the accident, an unexpected tenderness is awakened in Jamie, and he is prepared to relinquish his personal boundaries to keep John safe. Eventually, his affection turns out to harbour a longing for much more. Claire continues steadfastly to approach through the forest. While jealousy and memories of desire pass through her mind, she is anxiously searching for her husband. When she finds him, everything has changed.

On the passage, seasickness proves near fatal, but a cure comes from an unlikely source, a vaguely familiar Scot and his sister.
Jamie Fraser has not seen his illegitimate daughter since she was a small child. Never did he expect to see her aboard a ship. As he helps her overcome their shared affliction, he notices that her spirits are affected by more than her ailment. He can't help but to wonder what else is drowning her.
