Styrs was born simply, the son of an ironworker, with a fire in his belly so hot it rivaled the cinders in his father's smithy. This pain drove him far from the simple life promised to him by birth. Styrs knew quite deeply, as dead skin tightened around bones that could no longer ache from the cold, that this pain could have been avoided.

Every picture he had seen of her she was smiling. He had a whole book of them– of their clean house and their old dog and his pressed white shirts. There wasn't another soul in those books, and in the back there were little scraps of paper with pictures of white dresses and plate sets. He had a feeling that there was something missing in that book.
