People are vague. Weird things happen and no one seems to notice or care. Everyone ignores the howling at night on the reservation and the bloodless animal corpses on its edge.
You're almost certain something prowls in the dark, but every move to investigate is blocked by the town's unfortunately handsome chief of police.
Even more unfortunately, everyone knows small town cops hate feds.

Bilbo sighed a looked at himself in the long mirror on his bedroom wall. It was his first day at a new college, due to Gandalf changing location for a job. Since is parents’ death from a young age Bilbo has been under Gandalf’s care. He was now 18 and attending a brand-new college in a new town. The college Gandalf had enrolled him to was also where his ‘new job’ was at – Erebor High.
Wanting to fit in is hard and with a new college and town its even harder. Bilbo finds himself battling with his emotions and sexual thoughts regarding a certain gym teacher - Mr Oakenshield.

Glancing around the room he’d been led to, he marveled at the stonework and beautiful decorations of the room, even as the dwarf led him to a cot, and he sat down, wrapping the coat tighter around himself. It wasn’t hard to do, the thing was massive on him and he felt like he was drowning in fabric and fur. Altogether the most comfortable he’d been in years.
An older dwarf bustled into the room, setting things down on a table before coming over to look at him. “Right. What’s happening- they said you were found in the orc camp, eh little halfling?”
Bilbo bristled at the term, and the older dwarf tried to look him over, poking and prodding at him even as Bilbo tried to swat him away.
He didn’t want to be looked at, and he wasn’t half of anything!
Or: After destroying a pack of orcs, crown prince Thorin finds that they'd kept a hobbit slave, whose curse prevents him from speaking.
This is only the first mystery that this hobbit presents to him.
