“Mm, knew it,” Ed said quietly, rubbing his face gently against the fabric of Stede’s nightshirt.
“What’s that?” Stede asked, holding himself so very still, as if moving too much or too fast would frighten off the fearsome pirate who had chosen Stede’s bed to curl up in, which would be a tragedy. The warmth and weight of the other man surrounding him immediately came as a great comfort, and he did not want to part with it so soon.
“Huh?” Ed voiced in return, as if he’d been unaware he had just spoken aloud, “Oh, just that your bunk would be soft and warm. And that you’d smell nice.”

It's late one night when Ed clambers into Stede's bunk, and who is Stede to turn away the most fearsome pirate captain (not that the thought crossed his mind even once)

“I mean, you kind of did the same thing yesterday,” Lucius tells him afterwards, when they’re reviewing the day’s adventure for the logbook. Ed’s somewhere out on deck, which is a very good thing, since Stede is having a bit of a panic. “And the day before, and the day before—”
“Did I really?” Stede wails in horror.
“And the day before,” Lucius confirms. “Except then it was ‘dear heart.’ No, wait, it was ‘my love.’ ‘Dear heart’ was the day before that. Actually, I don’t think you’ve called him by just his name in like, a week.”
Or, Stede realizes he's maybe, possibly started calling Ed rather revealing things.

Ed rolls his eyes. "Yeah, and there's never a wrong time to open up the gates of hell."
Stede levels him with a look. "A bit dramatic, don't you think?"
Ed heaves a sigh. "If you sleep now, I'll regale you with all kinds of exciting stories about my charmed fucking childhood when you wake up, alright?"
Stede grins, laying back down. "Deal."
