After a pause, the figure turned and stepped through the open door of the church. This time the rectangle of light did not shrink. The door remained open. A silent invitation from God.
If the priest waiting behind this door had laid a trap for him, then it would not be the first that Jonas had walked willingly into. But there was no stranger here to warn him of the repercussions of walking this path, and no mystery as to whom Jonas would find within the walls of the church, what he stood for, and why he had fired his rifle only once into the night.
