Carissima Niyat had been born with magic on her tongue.
It had been a tightly-wound coil that sprung as soon as she opened her mouth as a babe, her mother said. Hecate claimed that her first wail extinguished a nearby candle, and her brother’s hiccup in response had ignited it again.
It was a part of her. A nature as secondhand as breathing. She couldn’t help the way magic flowed freely in and out of her, like the channeling of a lightning rod.
So in New Jersey, where it had slowly ebbed away to become weak and faded, Carissima Niyat had decided to ignore the remaining pulse of it thrumming in her veins. She tried to ignore the godhead imbued into her from the moment she was born, that was as much a part of her being as any birthmark or memory.
When the chariot swept down from the sky, blotting out the sun, she knew she made a mistake somewhere along the way. Another mistake. Carissima is forced to confront the past; her home, her family, the war, and the magic thrumming and pulsing inside her with every heartbeat- an incessant, ever-lingering buzz that fills her senses. And worst of all, she finds herself fighting the gods’ battles once again.

Summary
Carissima knows pigs, and so she knows men.
Or so she assumes. Her life on Aeaea has been spent among other witches, under the care of the only woman who could rear generations of gifted women. And Circe guides them on one matter and one only: magic.
It swells. It surrounds them. And, it is pliable, to some. Carissima happens to be one that can tug on its strings and command tasks of it more than many others. Society is of small concern to her on Aeaea, and even as she watches men sail to their island to marry friends and girls she grew up beside, Carissima pays little mind to it.
Until a man stakes claim on Hylla.
She knows Circe allows marriage when the woman proposed to was suitable- she even encourages it- and yet, Carissima still finds it within herself to be staggered. Had adulthood truly been so close all along? Will her position as one of Circe’s most adored pupils save her from a fate of sharing a bed with a man in a far-off kingdom?
As she learns a few days after Hylla’s wedding, face-to-face with a sweaty messenger and a boatful of gold, it won’t.

Summary

Putting one foot in front of the other in a grim show of stubborn determination, gritting his teeth and bearing it. Survival was all he had ever been taught. He knew how to do it. So when he was kidnapped by the Southern Water Tribe, he expected to fight as he always had. He didn’t expect to be taught instead how to live.
In a warring land, the Water Tribe forgave the enemy in an act of defiance. For this, he was torn from them, and this time, his wounds won't heal so easily.
Forced back into nothing but survival, the last person Zuko expected to see was Hakoda's son. Hakoda was a promise of safety. The relentless blue of Sokka’s eyes was a promise of happiness. Zuko could have both if he just reached out his hands, but he found them clutching into fists. After all, he’d been burned one too many times.
But hey, at least between Hakoda and Sokka, Zuko could appreciate the family resemblance of pure, asinine stubbornness.
