Summary
So there’s an ocean between them now, stretching wide and vast and turbulent, churning over all of the things that they’ve held in closed fists and between clenched teeth. All the things they haven’t dared to say out loud, dared to ask for, dared to even dream of.
And it’s not Buck’s fault, of course. But it isn’t Eddie’s either. Grief has a habit of making strangers out of people - of twisting and turning and warping you until you’re unrecognisable.
Bodies aren’t supposed to hold so much pain, after all.

It keeps happening.
Buck invites: a dinner, a game, a just swing by, man.

Summary
“You didn’t know he was doing this?” Taylor asks as she takes her phone back.
“I didn’t know we were dating,” Buck whispers, eyes tracking Eddie as he heads back to the table. Taylor laughs and quickly stops.
“Oh my god, you’re not joking. Well, good luck with uh - that,” Taylor snorts. She’s gone before Eddie sits back down, sliding two gin and sodas across the table towards Buck.or
The one where Buck didn’t know they were dating and Eddie is embracing whimsy (and isn’t as much of a technophobe as we think he is).

Summary
They were trapped.
Fire hadn’t broken through yet, but it was coming. Buck could feel the heat pushing in, wrapping around them like a warning. The smoke thickened, clawing at their throats, painting the walls with a haze of panic.
“So…” Eddie’s voice cut through the haze, rough around the edges but maddeningly calm. “You wanna talk about it now?”
Buck turned slowly, disbelief etched across every exhausted line of his face, and he hoped his deadpan glare said it all. He didn’t need to ask what Eddie was referring to.
No, he didn’t want to talk about how he accidentally told his best friend he loved him just hours earlier.
He’d rather let the fire take him.

Summary
Buck can feel the sob Eddie tries to hold back - can hear the whimper that manages to slip past his lips. It tears something open inside of Buck, and it feels like whatever is left of his heart starts leaking into the space between their bodies and staining their chests crimson.
“Tell me you love me,” Eddie begs.
“I love you,” Buck promises.
And he just wishes that it could be enough.

Summary
“You’ve been having these pains all day, right?” Hen asks.
Buck, unable to answer the question verbally, nods in response.
“And they’re getting more intense and closer together?”
He nods again.
“What does that sound like to you, Buck?”
As the pain subsides, Buck feels a gush of fluid from between his legs. He gasps, watching as his sweatpants turn darker.
“No fucking way,” Buck whispers.

Summary
Eddie has spent years training himself out of this hunger, made a life of ironing his want flat. But tonight— tonight, he lets it flicker to life.
Father Brian told him to find joy, after all.
And sure, Father Brian probably didn’t consider this kind of joy: the holy little jolt when Buck licks melted chocolate from his thumb, the soft flutter of his lashes as he hums at the taste, the pink of his mouth going glossy.
But oh well. Joy chooses its own altar.

Summary
"I'm so glad you're here, Evancito," Pepa tells him when he refills her cup of coffee, "my boys are doing so much for me, they deserve someone to look out for them."
That, unfortunately, strikes a nerve. Ever since Buck moved out, even a bit beforehand really, Eddie has been... distant. Not in a cold way, they still talk, he still has his back when it matters, but it feels forced. Like any moment they're together Eddie would rather be anywhere else.
Or, Buck finds out about Eddie's journey to faith, takes it in the worst possible way, and the boys finally have a proper conversation.

Summary
“You don’t have to do that,” Eddie says.
Buck shrugs. “You also don’t have to smile at every person who says ‘she’s in a better place’ like that helps, but here we are.”
The joke is soft, an opening. Eddie almost steps into it. “You’ve already done a lot,” Eddie says instead, faster than he means. “Go sit. Or eat. It’s—”
He hears it lining up and can’t stop it.
“—this is family stuff. I’ve got it.” The words are wrong the second they’re out; he hears them like Buck must. Buck’s hands still on the plate.
Or, Eddie is taking things day by day. Buck has a bit of a breakdown, then a bit of a breakthrough. Chris sees dead people.

Summary
When Eddie learns he and Buck got drunk-married at Chimney’s bachelor party, he goes on a metaphorical journey to figure out the best way to be a good husband.
“Now you get it. Damage done. We didn’t know,” Buck shrugs, “now we do, so we can just …”
Eddie’s mind races to finish Buck’s sentence:
Park our cars side-by-side in my driveway forever.
Hang all our clothes in the same closet so I have better access to that blue hoodie I love.
Kiss.
“… get an annulment.”
“What?” The word slips out of Eddie’s mouth before he can stop it.
Buck frowns.
“You want to …” Eddie drops his fork to his plate. He’s suddenly not hungry, despite how much he loves Buck’s omelets. His voice wobbles when he adds, “You don’t want to be married to me?”Bookmarked by writeyourownstory

Summary
As Buck sleeps, Eddie stays brushing his hands through Buck's curls, over the slope of his nose, over his pale face. He doesn't want to let Buck go ever again. He doesn't think he can.
He mindlessly brushes his thumb over the spot. Once above Buck's left eyebrow, once on the corner of his eye. So gently. He does it again.
With the amount of blood he lost, the usual redness of Buck's lips and the birthmark are both faded, nearly indistinguishable from the surrounding pale skin. It takes Eddie three brushes of his thumb for the realization to kick in.
His breath hitches. He freezes.
…
God, Eddie's been tracing Buck's birthmark on all of his girlfriends' faces for the past seven years.

Summary
Eddie shifts against the counter. “You’re the one who moved out, Buck. I spent three months in Texas trying to sell that house, and I came back and you’d just—moved out.”
Buck’s throat hurts. “I was saving you the trouble of asking me to do it.” Eddie stares at him. “It’s a two-bedroom. It’s not like we were going to get bunk beds.”
“We could have—” Eddie looks away, takes a gulp of his beer, then looks at the floor. “And this is the place you picked?”
“You bought your house in Texas without my input.” Buck knows it sounds petulant. “What’s wrong with this place?”
“There was a man living in the attic,” Eddie hisses.
“Yeah, and if I’d stayed, I would’ve been the guy living in your attic! I would’ve been—the guy who still couldn’t let go, you know? The guy still living in Abby’s place—” He cuts himself off and hopes Eddie doesn’t think about that too much. “I’m just trying to be normal, okay? I’m trying to figure out how people act when they—but you keep pushing me away, and you’re here now.”

"Why don't you come around anymore?
"You never...you don't come to movie nights. You don't come to dinner. I can't...I can't even remember the last time you came out with us and Tia Pepa. Where have you been?"
"You don't...you don't invite me out anymore," Buck finally explains with a shrug. Nonchalant. And Eddie wants to tackle him to the ground. "If you invited me, I would try to come."
And Eddie is seething.
"Try to come?"
+Buck starts to pull away from Eddie after the Ouija incident, and Eddie thinks he's being replaced by Ravi. This leads to a very honest conversation about their feelings. 9x05 coda.

“Run that by me again,” Athena says, pinching the bridge of her nose.
“Eddie Diaz, ma’am.”
“Eddie Diaz, as in Edmundo Diaz?” Athena blinks. “Six foot, firefighter, has big brown eyes like a baby sea otter that just lost it’s favourite pebble? That Eddie Diaz?”
“I can’t speak to the… otter comparison? But yes, Sargent Grant. Eddie Diaz confessed to stabbing Evan Buckley.”
“Confessed?” Athena repeats. “What do you mean he confessed?”
Or; Buck gets stabbed. Eddie mistakenly confesses. But what really happened?

Summary
“H-hey.” He frowns; he’s sure he remembers seeing Eddie on the calendar to work today’s shift. He longs for the days he would know without question because any time one of them took a day off they were in constant communication anyway. He doesn't remember the last time Eddie texted him. “Where’s Eddie?”
Hen and Chimney share a look. It makes Buck stiffen. Something’s wrong. He can tell something is wrong.
“Buck, Eddie didn’t tell you?”
“Tell me what?” They share another look. Hen frowns. Buck can feel the panic rising up in his belly. If he’d managed to eat his breakfast, he knows it would be coming up. “What’s wrong? Is Eddie okay? Is it Chris?”
