Eddie’s gone. That’s a fact. He’s miles away now, probably tapping his finger against the steering wheel to some classic dad rock song that Buck doesn’t even know.
But here, where Buck is, it’s raining. He’s soaked to the bone, hair stuck to his forehead, clothes heavy with saturation.
He’s shivering.
He probably looks a little like an abandoned dog on the side of the road who truly believes their owner is coming back, that they’ll come back if he just waits long enough, if he just stays perfectly loyal and still.
He realises how pathetic he must look. He also realises how pathetic he is.

In the middle of the table was a pile of cheesy Dorito chips that they were using instead of money. The game had started halfway through their shift. Whenever they had down time, they had returned to it. The bell had yet to go and they were taking advantage of the spare time.
Buck snorted, shaking his head. “No way. Last time I did that I ended up with millions.”

Eddie watches snowflakes slowly land in Buck’s hair, some strands breaking free from the rest and moving in the wind. And Eddie has to remind himself, that he isn’t real. That the hurt he thinks he’s seeing on the android’s face is just a program, and that the curls on top of his head are nowhere near as soft as they look.
“I’m whatever you want me to be, Lieutenant,” Buck answers him calmly, and his voice is just as gentle and undeterred as always. “Your partner. Your buddy who’ll happily watch your son. Or just a machine. Designed to accomplish a task.”

Reluctantly, Buck detaches himself from Eddie’s neck and lifts his head just enough for them to look at each other. Eddie’s eyes are dark even with the room bathing in sunlight, his pupils blown. His chest rises and falls at a quick pace, his cheeks flushed. Buck can’t help but lick his own mouth at the sight of Eddie’s kiss-bruised lips.
I did that, he thinks. A few months ago he hadn’t even known how to kiss Eddie properly for the first time, and now he can do this. Can leave Eddie looking completely disheveled with just his mouth and hands, the sound of his fast thumping heart loud in Buck’s ears. It makes his chest swell with pride.

“Best friends,” Eddie repeats the words like they're foreign. Like he’s never heard them before.
“Yeah, you know that,” Buck insists, he’s tempted to reach out, wants to pull Eddie into him, but he’s not sure if that would help or hurt right now. “We’re BuckandEddie,” he adds for good measure. That’s what everyone always says. It’s an easy answer when they’re acting ways that others deem bizarre.
Eddie is silent, seemingly processing what Buck just said. He can’t be sure, but Buck feels like he just failed some test he didn’t know he was taking. That was not the right answer.
“What exactly do you think we’re doing here, Buck?” He demands, gaze steely as he finally meets Buck’s eye. His tone is so cold it sends a shiver down Buck’s spine. Do you know how much Christopher misses you? How could you? You’re not around. All traces of golden syrupy warmth from earlier in the afternoon are gone. “Are you fucking all of your best friends bare?”

“Huh?” Maddie blinks at him, cheeks flushed, stance a little wobbly. It’s rare he sees her properly drunk—but it makes him happy to see her so loose and comfortable. “Evan?”
“Eddie texted asking for a ride.” He narrows his eyes at her. “How much did you guys drink?”
Maddie squints right back. “That’s none of your business.”
“Uh-huh. Can I have my boyfriend back, please?”
“Fine.” She twists around and calls into the house, “Eddie! You-know-who is here!”
When she turns back, Buck gives her a puzzled look. Maddie just shrugs. “I’m not putting another dollar in the B-U-C-K jar. I’ve got two kids.”
Eddie appears under a minute later, weaving through the hallway with a grin that could light up the whole house, the same beaming grin that lights up Buck’s whole life. His hair is a little mussed, his cheeks flushed and ruddy. The second he spots Buck, his megawatt smile somehow gets even brighter.
“Baby,” He says, stumbling the last step it takes to end up by Maddie’s side. Buck catches him by his arm easily.
“Hey, loverboy,” Buck bites his bottom lip, swallowing down a laugh. “C’mon, let’s get you home.”

Eddie would be lying if he said he's a hundred percent into everything Buck tells him, but he has never—not once—not listened to what he has to say.
Setting down his beer and turning towards Tommy, Eddie glares, his mouth twitching. "Doesn't take away the fact that he's still very much openly hating on women for most of them."
A beat of silence, "I take it you've read him, then."
There is a taunting tone in his voice that Eddie can't quite ignore. He forces himself to smile, breathes in through the nose, "Wasn't interested in reading him after Buck explained in painful detail why I shouldn't."
