“We’ll run with that,” PJ decides. “I’ll demonstrate—who wants to volunteer? Brittany?”

Brittany chews on her lip and says nothing, so Hazel decides to take initiative and steps forward. “I’ll go.”

PJ briefly looks crestfallen, but she smoothes her face over within seconds. “Alright. Hazel. Why not.”

    Summary

AU where Tess rescues a badly injured little Ellie, and Joel disagrees, but he can't say no to Tess. Suddenly, Ellie lives with them, and unknowingly, they find themselves navigating a dangerous world to protect her.

    -------------

To his relief—something loosens in his chest—Tess is safe and sound. The pale, bloodied kid she carries in her arms can't say the same. A slender thing, maybe five or six years old (though with the poor rations in the Quarantine Zone, Joel wouldn't be surprised if she passed for seven). She's skeletal, famished, with coppery hair and a round face. Her clothes are drenched in crimson, but FEDRA is still readable in black letters on the front. She doesn't seem unconscious. Her face contorted in pain, tears streaming down her cheeks.

    Summary

“I don’t know why I have to go to this stupid fucking group in the first place.” Ellie slumped in the passenger’s seat of Marlene’s big black SUV. She stared out the window at the evening skyline along the Longfellow Bridge, arms crossed over her chest, lips pressed together in a thin line.

“We’ve talked about this, Ellie,” her social worker responded calmly. “For the judge to agree to probation instead of jail time, you need to complete 12-weeks of court-mandated grief therapy, and since you refused to do individual sessions, we had to find a group that would take you. Compassionate Friends is the only one with an opening.”

“But it’s for people with dead kids,” she said flatly. Bereaved parents, was the politically correct term that the website had used.

“Ugh, I wish I could drive,” she says, paying him absolutely no mind as she climbs into the passenger seat. “Riding down the highway with the windows down, blasting music.”

“Get caught in traffic,” Joel says. “Get a flat tire. Pay for a new alternator.”

“Yeah, yeah, you don’t even know. You have a car. You can go wherever you want. You have everything.”

Joel grips the wheel tight. Kids never have anything to worry about. Their whole lives laid out in front of them like a highway. Everything, everything.

Joel gets a contracting job at a school. Being around kids all day is bad enough--and then a brazen, foul-mouthed teenager keeps showing up at his work site. Joel doesn't care why she's sleeping at school instead of at home. He doesn't.

    Summary

That was how he found out that it was not really 2020 as he thought but 2022, that at some point he'd made a tackle that had cost him his career, that he was no longer a football player at Richmond but a coach, that Nate was more than a kit man these days but wasn’t with the club anymore, and that not only were they not facing relegation, they were actually doing really well in the Premier League. He didn't find out why Jamie had disappeared some time after he'd said the wrong date. That one remained a mystery.
