Summary
The farmboy does not cry when he kills the lamb. Its thin and scrawny wool envelops the end of the firearm's barrel. Almost as if it is embracing it, a warm hug and dance, a tender kiss goodbye. The lamb did not fight the gun against its skull, not anymore at least. At the beginning it writhed and bleated and cried out. For what? A mother it did not have. It was a sick orphan child. Mother sheep will not house sick lambs. When the farmboy pressed the gun further into the lambs skull, his expression remained the same, tender yet vacant; a mask. The lamb did not cry out, it did not even attempt. The dirt piled up underneath its chin as it slid forward and closed its eyes. The lamb would die.
Sometimes, most of the time, when he Dennis Whitaker was in "The Pitt" he felt like he was killing a sick lamb.
And then there were days, most days, when he felt like he was the sick lamb.
