Mike, who’s drowning in lamplight, looks completely ethereal. Mike, who wouldn’t let him sleep alone in the basement, who wouldn’t let him be lonely, not for a moment.

It was a boy. He looked almost… familiar, but Will was certain he was a complete stranger. He wasn’t supposed to talk to those, but this one looked different than the strangers his mother warned him about. He had unkempt black hair, very wide dark eyes, and a mouth parted in surprise.
"Hi,” the boy said carefully. He sounded shocked. “What’s your name?"
Will wanted to bolt, to run into the courtyard and hide there until his mom came and found him. He didn’t move. He stood as still as a small boy could stand, mouth clamped shut.
“I’m Mike. It’s short for Michael,” the boy said softly. Will found his voice, but it came out soft, tentative.

She was absolutely not supposed to be noticing every single detail about the other girl, like the way her hair was unkempt from her hours on the chair, or her quiet laughs, or how her beautiful eyes skimmed the page. She was absolutely not supposed to let her tiny crush of the last few weeks fester into whatever this was.

That’s what Will was, wasn’t it? A stranger? Mike had known him for a grand total of two and a half hours now. But he felt like he knew him much better than that, from what he’d heard from El. And Will was the type of person that just… He was so completely easy to talk to, to be friends with. He fit into conversations, he held easy smiles and little hesitation. He just fit, really, really well. And though Mike barely knew him, it didn't feel that way at all. It was like he'd known him for years.

Will dropped his head into his hands. “Mike, oh my god—”
Paladin Mike’s jaw tightened. “I do not own him,” he said immediately. “He is—” He stopped, swallowing. His eyes went back to Will softening, and that softness made Mike hate him even more. He could recognize the look, and saw it mirrored in his own eyes countless times.

“He is the Light. By your oath, I am bound to him. My liege.” He bowed his head slightly toward Will, his mouth wrapped around the word like it was a prayer. “My cleric.” He said after, softer.
“Oh my god.” Will flushed, impossibly. “That is crazy. He is actually crazy."
Max, who had been standing with her arms crossed behind them, muttered, “Jesus Christ,” under her breath.
Mike Wheeler is going to explode, because there is an alternate, armoured version of him, following Will Byers around like he belonged to him.

“He really does look like Mike,” Lucas breathes, as he gives Mike’s twin a scan, head to toe.
“Yeah, if Mike were way hotter and a knight?” Max chips in, and Will can vaguely hear Mike muttering again. “He looks so medieval, like he’s from Camelot or some shit.”
“I am Michael,” the knight begins to plead again. He turns his doe eyes back to Will, returning to his side like a diligent guard, even going as far as to reach out and take his hands. “Please, you have to believe me. I would never lie to you. Have I ever broken our oath? Let me prove it.”
Will was a bit preoccupied with gazing into the knight’s eyes, his cheeks flushing under the intense stare and the way his hands were held so gently. Mike had no issues ruining their moment.
“And he’s weirdly obsessed with Will.” Mike sounds even angrier than he did in the woods, and his sharp tone is enough for Will to snap out of his hand-holding to step a respectable distance away from the knight. “We need to send him back to wherever he came from.”

Mike the Brave ends up in Hawkins and sweeps Will off his feet. Mike has a lot of Feelings™ about it.

“No, seriously,” Will says. The hand that isn’t holding his beer raises between them, twitching downwards like he’s physically shoving any of Mike’s other questions back down where they came from. “It was a stupid thing to ask.”
Mike shakes his head, then scoots forward, inching closer to Will. “It’s not,” he insists. “If it’s you asking, it’s not stupid, Will.”
On New Year's Eve, 1996, Will asks Mike a question. He gets an answer and then some.

“Yes,” Max replies without hesitation. “You’re unbearably lonely.”
Will drops his jaw, offended. Sure, he might not have the most entertaining love life, but he wouldn’t go that far. He’s happy where he is. Content. He doesn’t need a guy to fulfill him. “My loneliness is completely bearable.”

It started three weeks ago, almost four. Will had woken from some sort of nightmare and, instead of seeking comfort in Mike the way he usually would, he’d rolled out a sleeping bag from the closet and chosen to sleep on the floor.
No one believes Mike, except for Joyce. But even she doesn’t understand the full extent to which something is wrong with Will.
Mike understands, though. Mike has been paying attention.
