I can feel his mouth by my ear, the warm inhale of his breathing pointed against my skin. I listen to the quiet sound of his lips parting, the soft exhale of his words that sound too silent. Too much like a whisper. I feel like I’m hearing his thoughts for once, passed unwanted through his lips.

“Choose,” Lan Zhan interrupts, with a deadly calm.
The command is so unexpected that Wei Ying actually stops talking.
Reluctantly, Wei Ying caves. “Huh? Choose what?”
“Choose whether you’re going to stay here,” Lan Zhan says, slow and enunciated, “or whether you’re going to leave.”
