    Something is crackling in the air, and as oblivious as Henry can be, there’s no mistaking the closeness of Alex to him, the dark look in his eyes that are piercing through his very being.
    Or maybe he’s just insanely drunk.
    Because in what other universe would his insanely gorgeous co-worker be looking at him with bedroom eyes, one hand gripping his forearm tightly enough to keep him in place, but not enough to bruise.

    “I think,” Alex says slowly, as though giving Henry a chance to protest, “that we should fuck.”

    “Excuse me?”

    Henry dislikes doing things that he doesn’t excel at, this includes but is not limited to; baking, interior decorating and acting normal around drop-dead gorgeous men who have eyes he can practically dive into and drown in.

    Unfortunately for Henry, his new job involves all three.

    But Alex is straight, clearly, given how he flirts with every woman that comes through the door, which is fine.

    Two can play at this game.

Its edges are coated in lingering sleep, and the drowsy-slow pull of the words lulls them to a deeper accent than he usually lets slip through. The syrupy drawl skitters the length of Henry’s spine.

    He looks up when the door opens, dark eyes wide and wild, but Henry would know them anywhere. Would know every curve and angle of this face, even with the heavy stubble obscuring the dimple in his chin, even with the dark circles beneath his eyes, even with the greyish cast to his usually-warm brown skin that is, frankly, terrifying.

    “Alex?”

    “Took you fucking long enough,” he groans, then stumbles past Henry into the flat, leaving a trail of bloody footsteps behind in his wake.

    (When a certain beautiful, antagonistic detective shows up bleeding on his doorstep in the middle of the night, Henry's ability to deal with his attraction is put to the test.)

    It shouldn't matter that Alex has been present for each and every one of Henry's most important life milestones, sometimes the singular catalyst for them. It shouldn't be important that he's grown to be more familiar to Henry than even some of his own family members, that part of him is burrowed so deeply into Henry's subconscious that he can taste it sometimes, that even when Alex crashes in, spirited and passionate, it feels like an easy exhale; like coming home.

    It shouldn't matter, but it does.
