Summary
Samira wakes up on her first day off in a week to an email from Jack in her inbox.
It’s a video. From the thumbnail, she knows that Jack finally got a chance to look at their message thread at the end of his own stressful and hectic shift, and went home to pour himself a drink. He hasn’t bothered to change out the thick black tee shirt that he owns at least ten of, made out of some kind of indestructible cotton blend fabric that stands up to blood and color safe bleach. His scruff is verging on a beard, his curls wild even though she can tell he’s just gotten a haircut.
The email has no subject, but in the body is simply: Be a good girl and make yourself come for me. Love you.

Summary
“Jack,” he’s gray now. He wasn’t gray when they met but now his auburn brown hair has faded to almost entirely silver. She imagines it would suit him if there wasn’t so much blood in it. “to what do I owe the displeasure?”
Maybe it’s a mean thing to say when he’s actively being loaded out of an ambulance, but Samira really cannot bring herself to care. He’s upright and breathing, so in the grand scheme of things, the situation can’t be that bad. And you’re allowed to be rude to your ex-husband—it’s one of the big perks of getting divorced before you graduate med school. It’s the participation prize of a failed marriage.
“Hey there, gorgeous.”

Summary
The year after Jack Abbot loses his wife (car accident, Charleston, pedestrian versus drunk driver) and his leg (car bombing, Fallujah, shrapnel tearing his blood vessels to shreds) he makes some very ill-advised decisions (car sex, Bethesda, with the woman who cut off his foot).
The latter of these things could probably be explained away as some sort of trauma response, forgotten or at least worked through with the VA assigned therapist who’s calls he’s resolutely ignoring. Except, that is, for one tiny thing. One tiny mistake that turns out, in the grand scheme of things, to be rather larger than they’d ever anticipated.
“Birth control.” Emery Walsh tells him gloomily, after she’s sat down gingerly on the edge of his admittedly kind of gross second-hand sofa and handed him a piece of white plastic emblazoned with two pink lines.
“Knew we’d forgotten something.”

Summary
She wants him so badly her teeth ache. She’ll never say it out loud. It will eat her alive. One day, when she dies and a pathologist cracks her chest (nipples to navel is no man’s land), they’ll see a heart calcified with the weight of these fatal fantasies. It would make an excellent case study, she thinks, ruefully. They’ll write articles about her– 29-year-old female, South Asian, presented as healthy but upon further examination, was deeply ill. Poor, poor Samira Mohan, besotted with her handsome, brooding, married attending. She died how she lived– desperate, wanting, and alone.
