“…What.”
“An actual angel,” Shane insists, reaching up with clumsy reverence and cupping Ilya’s face. “They sent you down. Because I’m—” he swallows hard, suddenly emotional, “—I’m such a good person.”

Summary
After Shane left in a hurry, Ilya had been stuck in a mood. Seeing him with Rose had done nothing to help. He gathers up all his courage and decides that the least they owe to each other is a real conversation.

“Can we talk?” Ilya pries the door open enough to make Shane look at him, to see the somberness in his eyes. It’s hard to let his guard down; they’re load-bearing walls, but he’s prying the door to himself open as much as the door into Shane’s building. There’s no skirting around this anymore.
Shane sneers and shakes his head. “Says the guy who ghosts me for months at a time.”
It isn’t a hard no and he isn’t trying to push Ilya back out the door, so Ilya steps fully inside, letting the door close behind him and the click of the latch echoes through the stairwell. “I know. I’m sorry.”

Maybe if the video ended there, Shane thought, it would be okay. Okayish. Still incriminating. Still a fucking disaster. Still embarrassing, to have his breakup with this beautiful actress filmed and disseminated on Reddit of all fucking places, but not a nail in his coffin, burying him alive. But the video didn’t end there.
“Can I ask if you’ve ever been with another guy?” she had to ask.
And he, tears visible in his eyes, had to nod.
Just once. Just a single nod.
Why did he have to nod?
“Have you ever told anyone that before?” He shook his head. “Was it different? With a guy?”
“Of course.”
Of course.
“Was it better?”
“Yes.”

Shane’s conversation with Rose is secretly recorded. Months later, after the All-Star game and Ilya’s confession in Russian, the video gets leaked online. Shane is outed to the world while Ilya is in Russia, and must now finish the 2016-2017 season with the entire world in on his secret.

Summary
The Swiss National League doesn’t care about the legendary Hollander-Rozanov rivalry. When the MLH can’t negotiate with the Hockey Players’ Union in time to prevent a hockey lockout at the start of the 2015 season, the Zürich Lions jump at the chance to sign both Shane and Ilya to short-term contracts. For four months in Switzerland, they share a team, a line, a house, and a bed.
Then the lockout ends in January, and it’s time to go back. Back to different countries, cities, lives. Beds.
