Except he hadn’t, because Hikaru was still there. Not in the body that held the same warmth, whose voice warped and melded into something familiar yet uniquely its own, but in the fresh air of Kubitachi. He was in the sweet smell of the summer grass and the sticky residue of popsicle on his fingers.
Yoshiki’s sure now he would’ve been in Tokyo as well. Indou Hikaru would’ve haunted him on every street corner he’s never been.

And without him even realizing it, the buzz is back again. Snuck up on him, really.
He falls back onto the ground and splays out his arms just like Hikaru beside him. His eyes centre on the grey sky above as he takes in a slow, deep breath.
“Exams are coming up,” he says.
“Is that why we’re here?” Hikaru replies, with a singular chuckle.

Summary
“Oh! You wanna—?” Hikaru starts wriggling immediately, creating a larger gap between himself and Hikaru. Hikaru lets out a small, amused huff as he moves to follow suit, and the honest truth is that the sound makes Yoshiki want to smile, but he feels he’s waited long enough so rather than let the two of them create a proper, Yoshiki-sized spot for him on the couch, he forces his way between them.
It takes some finagling to be sitting both comfortably and facing the fireplace. To be fair, if Yoshiki had waited, he probably would’ve had a nice place to sit just waiting for him. But Hikaru lets out a little breathy sigh and latches onto his middle, apparently unbothered as he presses his cheek firm into Yoshiki’s shoulder.
Hikaru, on the other hand, is grinning. “Impatient,” he sings, but his eyes are sparkling with fondness.

Susato was going to need time. Yujin accepted that long before he saw Tokyo on the horizon line from the top deck of the SS Andromeda. Even if she understood on some plastic, surface level that the man across from her was to be called father, that alone meant nothing to a girl who has never known one all her life.
The association of father as a figure to trust, as someone near and dear, as a source of security and comfort and affection, was not there. It had not been made. It could not have been made. A child was not born with such a concept inlaid in them. No, like all things, it was one fostered with time, informed by experience, and it could have only been made had only Yujin been there.
Yujin Mikotoba watches his daughter grow up.
