‘You still haven’t found someone to guard over?! At your age ?!’
‘I’ve heard that guardian angels who don’t guard over no one for a long time end up in hell!’
‘How long you’ve been without guarding someone? More than a few divine years, am I right?’
‘If you’re not careful, you might even plague the next person you guard, all because you’ve been absent from your post for so long!’
The incessant questions from other guardian angels – and all other divine deities – were getting to Seokjins mind.
After brushing off these questions for around 50 years – on divine time, not human time –, he was getting anxious, what if something terrible truly happens to him or to the person he guards over, only because of his incompetence on finding someone?
That’s how he ended up on Min Yoongis living room, his golden skin, big soft wings and silky white robe standing out against the boring grey couch and stained carpet.
The human – Yoongi , Seokjin mentally scolded himself, if you want him to trust you, you must treat him with minimun respect – was practically glued to the floor, his bag was thrown open on the floor spilling papers and a pair of headphones, his eyes were open so wide that Seokjin worried for his sight, but just for a quick moment, enough for Yoongi to start talking.
‘Who- what are you?’ – he asked, out of breath like he’d just ran a marathon.
Seokjin understood the feeling, or at least tried to be sympathetic, a high class divine being like him standing over this tiny and fragile human? Yoongi probably thought Seokjin was death, ready to end him and judge his sins.
‘Firstly, I’m not a what , and yes a who . My name is Kim Seokjin, guardian angel, at your service.’ – he bowed low, trying to show Yoongi that he wasn't a threat to his simple life.
After ten seconds of silence, Yoongi recovered from the shocked state he was in and grabbed the umbrella that he kept besides the door, throwing it at Seokjin, who dodged just in time to feel a whoosh of wind on his cheek. The umbrella hit a flower vase that broke into tiny blue pieces immediately.
‘You freak ! I don’t care what or who you are, get out of my apartment right now!’ – he screamed exasperated, looking for more things to throw at the invasor, like the pencil sharpener that fell from his bag.
Seokjin didn’t even try to dodge it, just letting it hit his broad chest and fall to the floor. He looked as annoyed as when the other angels started to question his abilities, his wings trembled with rage.
‘Listen here hu- Yoongi , I’m no threat to you.’ – he said, trying to keep his tone down and calm, walking closer to the other – ‘I’m here to protect you and give you my advice on mundane human things, for example, which pair of jeans you should wear to work today, and other questions that humans deem important.’
Yoongi, who looked ready to call the police – but would they even take him seriously? What would they say? ‘Hey officers, I got a guardian angel inside my apartment, does this means I’m going to heaven?’ –, was now giving Seokjin a dirty look as if the angel had asked him an obvious question.
Seokjin didn’t completely understand the meaning behind the look, but it seemed like Yoongi was getting slightly amused by Seokjins little knowledge on humans. He decided to take advantage of that.
‘Or, for another example, what kind of flirtatious actions should I use on my future partner to show them that I care for their well-being.’ – Seokjin was getting more ridiculous at each dumb example, which indeed amused Yoongi, who was trying to contain his laughter.
‘Or, how about your current educational system? I heard some call it college, others call it hell, though I don’t think Lucifer would be very happy with that comparison, he says college is waaaaaay worse.’
That one got a laugh out of Yoongi.
Seokjin sat on one side of the boring grey couch with his legs folded and wings squeezed between his back and the couch arm, holding a yellow mug of coffee, he tried to deny the warm drink but the other insisted – ‘Yoongi, us, divine beings, don’t really need the same kind of things you do, unless it’s for fun!’ ‘If I say it’s for fun, you’re gonna shut up and accept it?’ ‘Surely!’.
Yoongi was sitting on the other side, almost mirroring Seokjins pose but holding a blue mug, and without the wings – ‘Alright, so let me get this straight.’ – he started – ‘You’re a guardian angel, sent to help me, apparently , and you found me randomly after getting teased by other guardian angels? Because you had no one to protect or whatever?’
The angel nodded happily and smiled, almost spilling the coffee on the process – ‘Yes, you indeed ‘got it straight’ Yoongi, congratulations!’
‘Ok, now you sound like you’re mocking me. It’s not cool to mock other people.’
Seokjin nodded seriously and with a frown, almost spilling the coffee again – ‘I know, Yoongi. I’m not dumb, I’m just inexperienced on human business, mocking other angels is also taken as rude, so I see that our cultures do have similarities.’
The other pondered for a second – ‘Yeah, I guess so, I mean, you’re just a normal human but with wings on your back, right?’
Seokjin gripped his mug tightly, knuckles turning white, thinking of an answer – ‘It’s more complicated than that. I understand that humans have a very simplistic vision of us, like yours, but we’re way more than that, we’re more than pretty faces with perfect actions. Lucifer himself was an angel, a corrupted one, but still an angel, like you.’
Yoongi looked offended – ‘I’m not the devil, you know.’ – he took a sip of his coffee.
The angel had an ashamed look on his face, he looked down to his slightly cold coffee – ‘I know and I’m sorry for such comparison, I expressed myself wrongly. I meant that you and every other person on this planet is human, what makes the good humans good and the bad humans bad are their actions, exactly like me and Lucifer.’ – he sighed – ‘I’m a good angel because my intentions are good, and he was a bad one because power got to his head and lead him to a bad path.’
Feeling a stare, he looked up to find Yoongi with a serious look, holding the blue mug near his soft lips but not quite reaching them.
‘Oh, alright, I got it now.’ – he said quietly – ‘I’m sorry I was rude to you before, and I’m sorry for the umbrella.’ – he finished, red rising on his cheeks.
Seokjin gave Yoongi a small smile – ‘It’s alright, you just weren’t aware of how things worked, but I’m glad you do now.’ – the other gave the angel a small smile in return, making Seokjins heart flutter for a few seconds – ‘Also, don’t worry about the umbrella, I’m thousands and thousands of years old, I’ve faces deadly beasts, an umbrella is nothing.’ – he finished with a wink.
Yoongi laughter filled the air, his shoulders moving up and down softly.
He stopped suddenly and tilted his head, staring at Seokjin – ‘How long will you stay with me?’
The angels heart fluttered again, something about the words chosen by Yoongi made him want to stay on earth for longer – ‘As long as you need someone in your life.’
Yoongi smiled – ‘Good, I really need someone.’
