Work Text:

When he spotted them out, Dabi stepped closer to the window immediately. He had no idea what two U.A. Hero Course students were doing in such a shady district of the town – he would give a piece of his mind to the teachers for it if he could – but he felt the immediate urge to leave his apartment to follow them. Only just to provide protection, of course. He didn’t have ulterior motives – like spending as much time with his baby brother as possible.

He sighed, resignated and ran his fingers through his hair. He saw the broccoli opening his mouth, so he leaned forward, hoping he would hear them.

”The team up mission with Hawks was really fun, don’t you think?” He asked energetically and Shouto leaned a bit down.

”It wasn’t anything special,” Shouto said matter of factly and Dabi felt his heart clenched.

The fact that his little brother lost the ability to be really excited for anything made him sad. When they were kids, even finding an All Might card in a bag of chips made him squeal with excitement. One more reason for him to kill that piece of shit.

”Oh,” Midoriya said and his smile faltered a bit. Shouto let out a small gasp and Dabi saw that he had no idea what to do. It seemed like Midoriya noticed it too, because he looked at him while waving his hands in front of his face. ”P-please, don’t worry, Todoroki-kun! I am not mad or anything!”

”I really appreciated your worry Midoriya, but I need to learn how to be better in human interactions,” Shouto tried to explain his reaction and Dabi snorted. His baby brother was still adorable.

His examination of them was abruptly interrupted by the sound of knocking on his voice. Dabi sighed again and grunted, so the other on the other side of the door knew he could come in. There was only one person who would knock on his door like that anyways. He heard his door opening then closing and the rustling of wings as his guest walked up to him.

”They are totally adorable, aren’t they?” Hawks asked as he wrapped one of his arms around Dabi’s waist. Dabi leaned in his touch immediately and Hawks let out a small giggle.

”Shut up!” Dabi growled, trying to wriggle out of the hug, but Hawks only held him tighter. He leaned his head on Dabi’s shoulders, following the two teens’ every move.

In the corner of his eye, Dabi peaked at his face. Surprisingly, it hadn’t changed that much through the years. If he didn’t have that stubble, he would totally look like the little boy whom Dabi studied, shared a room with and at the HPSC and loved more than anything, except his family. His expression darkened to the memory. That was one of his many failures as well. When the training sessions became too hard and he had gotten beat up at home because of his bad progress, he just ran away – without a second thought.

”Dabs?” Hawks’ worried voice brought him back from his chain of thoughts. He looked down at him and met with concerned, golden eyes.

”I’m okay, birdie,” he assured him with a forced smile, but from the look on his face, Dabi knew he didn’t buy it.

”You ponder on things too much again,” Hawks sighed, turning his attention back to the teens below them. Dabi snorted and shook his head.

”You know me too well, little bird,” he said, amused, wrapping his arm around Hawks’ shoulder.

”Like hell I am!” Hawks stated and he was too cocky for Dabi’s liking.
