Chapter Text
When somebody steals a Selkie’s seal skin,
They say that the Selkie
Is bound to them forever
Or at least until
They can get their seal skin back.
Once upon a time,
So, so long ago,
There was a boy at that old academy.
He looked at Bianca,
My own Sister,
with fisherman’s eyes
And told her that her’s were like that of a seal.
Big, dark, brown.
That her freckled skin was soft.
At the time
It made me laugh.
Now it only makes me seasick.
The color of love was once blue-green. Seaweed green.
The color of love was once a myth come true.
The color of love was once the glow of celestial bronze
And trading cards felt like slippery silver fur in my palms
And promises were only warm, fatty blubber around
Pale
Splintered
Crushed
Bones.
Selkies were the fairytale that would never come true.
Seal skin was just seal skin,
Soft and pale and thin,
And
Telkhines and Gods and Monsters
were the ghost story come to life
And
My seal skin was stolen before I even knew it existed.
