Chapter Text
“Yes, mum I’ll remember; yup; love you too – yah bye – bye.” I finally managed to wriggle my way out my over-bearing mum’s hands and swiftly made my way to the stairs, trunk dragging along the ground, before she had the chance to hug me again. I started to haul the trunk up into the train, but it was harder than I thought it would be, and it was about to slip from my grasp. Just before it went tumbling down the stairs, I felt the weight lessen slightly. I looked around my large trunk and saw a medium height boy with short curly black hair pushing the other end of the trunk up. He smirked up at me and between us we got the trunk up the stairs and into an empty compartment.
“Thanks,” I said to the boy. Up close I could see his features more clearly. He had dark brown eyes and long eyelashes, and he was about the same height as me. He was wearing expensive looking black robes that were in pristine condition.
“No problem. You looked like you were going to collapse under the weight of that trunk, I’m Sirius Black,” he held out his hand for me to shake. He spoke with a bit of a posh accent. He is a Black, that is why he seemed familiar. The Blacks are a dark wizarding family, blood supremacists, and anyone with any sense knows not to get mixed up them. Sirius seems different though. He seems nice. I do not know why he just does.
"My names James, James Potter.” “Nice to meet you James,” he replied with a smile.
A few moments later a taller, light brown-haired boy came into the compartment. He looked a bit frail and tired, with dark circles under his eyes. His robes were definitely second hand, they were a fraction too short around the arms and legs. He stood there looking at us for a second and when he spoke his voice was slightly shaky.
“Can I sit in here? I would not want to bother you but everywhere else is full and this is the compartment with the least amount of people in it and-.”
“Whoa,” Sirius intervened, “take a breath, of course you can sit in here. I’m Sirius Black, this is James Potter, what’s your name?” Sirius spoke as if he and I had known each other for years.
“I’m Remus Lupin, um- nice to meet you.” “May I sit here too?” A small voice was coming from behind Remus. Remus stepped to the side and standing in the door was a short, heavier boy with dirty blonde hair and blue eyes. Sirius spoke again, he was certainly a confident person.
“Do we look like the judgmental type?” the short boy looked unsure, “Merlin’s beard! Of course, you can sit here, what is your name?” “Peter Pettigrew.” Sirius walked up, swung his arms around Remus and Peter’s shoulders and grinned, “I can tell we are all going to be very good friends.” We all smiled and looked at one another and I could tell everyone agreed with Sirius.

The train whistle blew, and we all clamored to the open windows to wave our goodbyes to our parents. My parents wore big smiles on their faces, and I could see streams of tears rolling down my mother’s cheeks. Despite what I say I will miss my mother while I am at Hogwarts. I turned back around and noticed Sirius had not joined us at the window. I was wondering why he would not want to say goodbye to his parents when I saw a flash of red outside the door. Standing outside the glass compartment door was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen. She was like a ray of sunshine illuminating the world after a long, dark night. Like a cool breeze on a humid summer’s day. She had fiery red hair and green eyes. Her cheeks were rosy and dotted with freckles.
“Do close your mouth James, it’s not an attractive look,” it was Sirius. I snapped back into reality and there she was in front of me. Her red hair pushed back out of her face. She was even more breathtakingly beautiful up close.
“You’re doing it again,” Sirius whispered in my ear.
The beautiful girl opened her mouth to speak, “I’m Lily, Lily Evans.” Her voice was soothing like the sweet melodies of a songbird.
“I, I, I’m, J-J-James,” every word in the English appeared to have left my mind and it was as if I was a toddler learning to speak. “Hello James. I have already been acquainted with your friends while you were catching flies with your mouth. Now if you do not mind, I am going to sit here, and I would rather not be disturbed. It has been a dreadful day and I just want to sit down.” She sounded very stern as she said this, as if she was scolding a child.
“How could you be unhappy at a time like this? We are going to Hogwarts!” exclaimed Peter shyly.
“Did you not just hear what I said, I wish to be left alone!” Peter looked almost hurt. We stepped away and allowed her to sit in the corner of our compartment near the window. She sat down and turned her gaze to the station slowly drifting away from us.

It had been about an hour when the boy came in. We were talking excitedly about quidditch at Hogwarts. Sirius was giving a demonstration of a complex keeper move using his hand to represent the broom. The boy slid open the door and stood there looking at us for a second. He was tall with a hook nose, long, greasy, black hair and wore a frown as if it were permanently etched upon his face since birth. Lily looked up from where she was sitting with an even deeper frown than his. If I were him, I would be terrified. She looked furious although I could see sadness in her eyes.
“Lily, please come with me. I’m sorry,” he said. Lily looked on the verge of tears, “because of you, Severus, Tuney hates me. It is all your fault she thinks I am a freak. Get out right this second.” “Lily, I’m sorry but she’s only a mu- you know what I mean,” Severus had not even finished before Sirius was up, shoving him out the door but not before I stuck out my leg to trip him.
He shot an angry look at Sirius, but Sirius just smiled and clapped his hands together, “Bye Snivellus! Thank Merlin he is gone. If he is the reason you were snarky with us earlier, you are forgiven. He seems truly awful.”
“Don’t call him that,” said Lily sternly.
“What do you mean don’t call him that? He was about to call your sister a muggle!” Sirius stated, clearly taken aback by the lack of thanks. Tears were now trickling slowly down Lily’s cheeks.
“Just don’t call him that, okay?” she asked. Remus sat down next to her and gave her a warm embrace. She wiped her eyes, thanked Remus, and flashed an angry look at Sirius. I looked over at Sirius and he looked as though he had just been confunded.
After a few minutes of silence we continued our conversation about quidditch, and Lily returned to staring out the window. She looked almost angelic. As I watched her sit watching the fields of flowers and animals rolling by, I could only think one thing. I am in love.
