Work Text:
Kaz keeps the pick in his left hand steadily stuck in position inside the keyhole whilst he probes around with the other one until he finds that particular spot. And viola, the lock smoothly comes apart.
"How?"
He had known Inej was standing right behind him yet he barely manages to keep himself from jumping at the sensation of her warm breath tickling his ear. When he turns his head, he finds her arm resting casually on the chair he is seated on, face mere inches from his own.
"Well as soon as all the tumblers within align–"
"I know." She murmurs. "You explained that earlier but how are you so fast?"
The genuinely innocent fascination in her eyes stuns him for a moment. Sometimes he feels as if her gaze is silently judging him, counting his sins. The other times she behaves like any fifteen year old easy mark would, impressed merely by deft lock picking. He wonders what expressions she'll make if he shows her some of his actual coin and card tricks. He immediately tramples on the juvenile thought.
"Just learn to do it." He says, clicking the lock shut again.
She frowns at not receiving a response to her question but grabs the picks on the table and plops down next to him. "I thought I was to be your spider."
"This is part of it."
Her lips curl down in disgust. "So you want me to steal?"
"Not just materialistic things but information as well."
"Then why am I not gathering information right now?"
He sighs wearily. "If you crack that lock open in an hour, I'll send you out on a spider's job. A job to gather intel."
She huffs. "I'll crack it within half an hour."
She isn't able to crack it in half an hour. Kaz still sends her out on a job.
