tempus enim tardius

Summary:

Warning: This is WIP so I don't know how this story is going to turn out. The themes might get darker and I might have to change the ratings and use more archive warnings. After I finish I might edit and reupload.

Sam Winchester dragged the Devil, himself, his half brother, and Michael into the cage following the events of the graveyard. Things go differently than expected. Lucifer takes all of his rage out on Sam, that doesn't change. However Michael's time in the cage gives him time to reflect on what's important. He stands guard over Adam, watching Lucifer's wrath; one day he snaps and can't take it any more. Michael then finds his humanity again.

Notes:

This does have Midam later on so if that's not your cup of tea then I suggest you move on.

Chapter Summary:
Michael never expected a lot from Sam Winchester, so the course of events that take place following their fall will never not take Michael by surprise.

Chapter 1: infectis heros

Chapter Text

Time went slower in Hell, Sam knew this. What must’ve been hours already was only 20 minutes on the surface. It would soon mean nothing, the passing of time. After 200 years, every day, around the clock suffering, it was enough to even make you forget the concept of time; to even go feral. Sam knew what he was jumping into, he knew he’d be tortured by Michael and Lucifer relentlessly. He knew his skin would never be his own again. He felt bugs crawl across his skin, but that must’ve just been anxiety. When Sam closed his eyes, he could remember Meg punching Dean. He could feel Dean’s skin break under his fingers, a feeling he felt too many times before.

“It’s a prison, made of bone and flesh and blood and fear.”
He heard his own voice echo in his head; his voice, but not his words. It was never his words. Not even when he was young, it was always Hell. When he’d start to beg and scream, nobody would listen. His screams would fall into the symphony of Hell. In the very corner of the cage, in the very corner of this reality, the loudest scream was only a whisper. It made Sam feel pathetic. Sam was pathetic. In the corner of the cage with Adam. How long could they hide until Lucifer and Michael would become aggressive towards them instead of each other.
Sam closed his eyes and listened to the clashing of their wings and blades waiting for them to falter and realize who was their enemy. Sam and Adam clung to each other out of fear, they didn’t care about dignity, they didn’t care about anything else.

“I’m so sorry Adam, you shouldn’t be here.” Sam would repeat over and over again, the fear of Michael and Lucifer turning their attention to them was no game; but the guilt of dragging Adam into this mess and having him there beside him was different entirely.

Adam didn’t respond, but that was the least of Sam’s concerns. The ongoing battle between Michael and Lucifer might rage on for years; there was no telling when it would end. That was what he was afraid of, the battle ending.

Sam looked up from Adam, for only a second when he heard the clashing of the blades stop. To his horror, Lucifer was standing over Michael and holding his lance. Lucifer brought up the weapon and prepared to bring it down on Michael. He had to do something, Michael was Adam’s only hope in here.
“HEY!” Sam shouted on the top of his lungs, standing up with his arms behind him. He barreled over towards Lucifer, rugby tackling him into the wall of the cage.
Michael laid there, sitting upwards and looking over at the two. He couldn’t believe what he just witnessed, did Sam Winchester really save him?

It took Lucifer mere moments to recover, shoving Sam off of him and holding him on the ground by his throat. The archangel looked down on him, with glowing red eyes. Six pairs of wings spread as wide as they could in the confinement of the cage, the massive wingspan being enough to make Sam seem like an insect.
“You’ll regret that.”
Knowing what was coming Michael dashed over to the other side of the cage in a nano-second. He grabbed Adam and pulled him into his chest, wrapping his wings around him. He had to protect Adam from this, but his pity for Sam was unimaginable.
He heard Sam’s hoarse screams from the other end of the cage. The smell of burning flesh made the horrific atmosphere of the cage almost unbearable. Sam’s flesh would heal, but when Michael thought of it, Sam never would. Not after seeing Lucifer’s face.
