Work Header

finally finally finally finally finally

Summary:

David gives some advice to Ted that might also apply to himself.

Notes:

The plan here is one drabble for every episode that Patrick appears in, from 3x08 all the way through to the finale! Will probably range from canon-compliant to fix-it to whatever the hell I feel like! Exactly 100 words each, and this time I’m editing/posting as I go. Enjoy!

This one was hard because 4x12 is my favorite episode in the show. Alexis being badass and capable, the Texis reunion, every line of dialogue exchanged between D&P... and that intense conversation with Ted that hits way too close to home. I too am basically the human equivalent of the inside of a roasted marshmallow...

Title is from "Finally // beautiful stranger" by Halsey, a song that encapsulates this moment (and David) so damn perfectly.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

It's somewhere in the middle of his little monologue that David realizes. His burnt-marshmallow heart flutters, then goes all gooey inside him at the thought. There's fear prickling in his fingertips — maybe always will be — but there’s also a reverberating trust so profound it steals the breath from his next sentence.

"Sometimes, it does work out," he says to Ted, but also to himself. "When you've got it, don't let it go."

David clears his throat, fragility firming into faith. Then, with the taste of new-found courage on his tongue — and also, unfortunately, dog treats — he goes to find Patrick.
