Work Text:
It's somewhere in the middle of his little monologue that David realizes. His burnt-marshmallow heart flutters, then goes all gooey inside him at the thought. There's fear prickling in his fingertips — maybe always will be — but there’s also a reverberating trust so profound it steals the breath from his next sentence.
"Sometimes, it does work out," he says to Ted, but also to himself. "When you've got it, don't let it go."
David clears his throat, fragility firming into faith. Then, with the taste of new-found courage on his tongue — and also, unfortunately, dog treats — he goes to find Patrick.
