Goth-Friends

Summary:

"Dad, Delia, Adam, Barbara," Lydia said, looking at each of them as she spoke. "Meet my girlfriend, Wednesday."

Or: Accidentally bringing up the fact that she’s dating a girl, Lydia’s pressured by the Maitlands to invite her girlfriend over. To not only meet her family, but to spend the afternoon.

Chapter Text

When Lydia first met Wednesday, just as soon as the latter had started at her school, she was delighted to know another goth who was as strange and unusual as she herself was. A new friend, yet also one of Lydia’s first living friends. That was two months ago, Lydia knew for a fact right now.

And, in those same two months, Lydia hadn’t ever or even expected to harbor any feelings towards her new, goth living friend. Yet she did. And it was made very clear soon afterwards that Wednesday, too, had the implication of feelings expressed towards Lydia. And it was shortly afterwards that they started dating. Became girlfriends. And they couldn’t have it any other way.

Lydia didn’t want any of her family to know, about Wednesday. Not yet at least. She just said she had a friend. Yet keeping it in that she was dating a girl was as hard as it was. As Lydia understood. She had also been waiting until the time was right to bring it up. Unfortunately for her, though, that wasn’t the case…

"I have a girlfriend!" Lydia uttered out on accident, without realizing it, one afternoon, whilst helping the Maitlands out with sorting through boxes that they'd only just now gotten around to.

God/satan she shouldn't have said that. At least not quite yet. The cat was out of the bag now.

Lydia looked down, for a brief moment, suddenly growing a little nervous. She worried that both of the ghosts would exhibit reactions of confusion, yet she also hoped that the Maitlands' reactions would both be just as pleasant. Them getting all excited, all happy for her, perhaps even more so than how Lydia's dad and Delia would be. Yet Lydia had always planned on telling the Maitlands first, she was still going to plan it all out before doing so. She just didn't expect it to just spill. Especially when she’d been keeping it secret.

Regardless, she waited a few minutes before looking at the Maitlands.

Their reactions, were exactly what she'd hoped them to be. Pleasant. Happy for her.

Though, at first, the Maitlands had taken the time to share a glance. Then they turned back to Lydia — huge smiles on both their faces.

"That's great news, Lydia!" Barbara chirped out, putting a hand on her adoptive daughter's shoulder. "You know, we always assumed that you kinda had a thing for girls. That you were a lesbian. What's she like?"

"What's her name?" Adam piped up, before Lydia even had a chance to talk.

Lydia rolled her eyes, laughing amusingly. "One question at a time, guys. I could hardly keep up as it is."

The Maitlands shared yet another look, then they turned back to Lydia.

"Sorry," they said at the same time, apologetic looks in their eyes.

“It’s okay,” Lydia said, smiling. “Her name is Wednesday and she's goth and just as strange as I am. I'd love for you guys and my dad and Delia to meet her but— I'm a bit nervous about that right now. Considering that I didn’t mean to just let it spill. I was going to wait until later to bring it up. That I was dating a girl. I was planning it out and everything. I just didn’t expect it to just spill. Without me realizing it.”

Adam and Barbara shared a glance, looking confused before said expressions softened.

"Hey," Adam said, him and Barbara looking at Lydia and giving her soft smiles — which she reciprocated. "This house is just as strange. I'm sure she won't mind coming over. To meet us. Why don't you, the next time you talk to her, invite her over. The five of us and her can watch a horror movie together—"

Adam was cut off, before he could even finish, by Lydia. "I just texted her. Said she wants to come over tomorrow. For a horror movie and then she wants to stay for dinner. Her parents are fine with it."

"That was quick," Adam mouthed to Barbara, the latter laughing quietly and to herself. Then he and Barbara looked back at Lydia. "And isn't that a little too soon?"

Lydia opened and closed her mouth a few times, trying to find the right words to say. But nothing seemed to be coming to her, so she just fell silent after a while and looked between both ghosts. Also, for a while. Adam and Barbara seemed to take that silence of hers as an answer, both of them looking off to the side.

"Never mind," Adam uttered out, resting a hand behind his head. He looked back over at Lydia. "Did she say when she was coming over?"

"Tomorrow," Lydia dryly said, rolling her eyes.

"No- what time is she coming over?" Adam clarified. "Did she say?"

Lydia takes the time to glance at her phone. Then she looks back at the Maitlands. "She just says whenever is fine. That it doesn't matter."

"How about around two tomorrow afternoon," Adam suggested, Lydia quickly texting that to Wednesday. It didn't take long, however, for a reply to Lydia's text to come through. Lydia read it over a few times, then she glanced back to the Maitlands.

"She says that that's fine with her, and her parents," Lydia explained. Yet another text came in, Lydia again glancing at her phone before looking back at Adam and Barbara. "She also says that her parents say that she can spend the night here, if she wants."

Before either ghost could answer, Lydia had quickly texted back a 'sure' and put her phone away. Before resuming sorting through boxes. Waiting, despite it only being less than a day away, for Wednesday to come over.

The next day came a little quicker than Lydia herself had anticipated it to. Maybe a little too quicker. Wednesday had shown up a little earlier than expected. Not that that wasn't at all fine. Lydia let her in, taking her over to her house's living room — where her family was all already sat and waiting. They looked up just as soon as Lydia plopped herself down on the black and white striped couch and gestured a hand out towards Wednesday.

"Dad, Delia, Adam, Barbara," Lydia said, looking at each of them as she spoke. "Meet my girlfriend, Wednesday."
