Chapter Text
Pain.
That was all he felt. No matter what day, no matter what time, he always felt pain.
Since the day he left his limbo, gasping for air as he came back to life, the pain never stopped. He remembered seeing the sun for the first time in over thirteen years. It had lit up everything around it, casting light onto everything and everyone.
He remembered seeing Tommy again, it felt great to see his brother as well. When he saw Tommy in his limbo, he had lost it because Tommy couldn't be dead, not like him. He couldn't be stuck in a horrible place like him because he was Tommy. Tommy wasn't Wilbur. The amount of relief he felt when Tommy disappeared was unexplainable. With that came the feeling of being alone again.
Tubbo was there too, along with another man, an Enderman hybrid if he was not mistaken. He hadn't talked to them much, if not at all. He was more focused on the fact that he was alive, breathing the intoxicating smell of the early morning.
"Will? Would you like to join us for dinner?" Wilbur was interrupted from his running thoughts by a soft knock on the door. Phil. Tommy had insisted on taking him back to Phil's, it was where the boy was staying as well. Wilbur's and Phil's relationship was hanging on by a thread at best.
Wilbur, though he rather not admit it, was excited to see his twin. He hadn't seen Technoblade for a long time now. Maybe their relationship wasn't that great but, he was still his brother, so was Tommy.
"Just give me a minute, I'll be out soon." He heard the footsteps retreat and climb up the ladders to the kitchen. Letting out a small sigh, Wilbur got up from the small bed he was sitting on.
His wings stretched behind him, fluttering to get rid of the stiffness out of them. They had changed as well, much like Wilburs appearance.
Whereas before they were pitch black, they now had red feathers running through the middle, with a few white down-feathers, unlike Phil, who had jet black wings with a few white feathers. His wings were like Phils, almost the same size and just as strong. That is the reason why most people thought Wilbur was Phil's biological son.
What people did not notice right away was his sharp senses, pointed ears or even the sharpness of his canines, resembling Technos, of a pigling hybrid.
Wilbur grabbed onto his trenchcoat and shrugged it on, walking past the mirror, where he got a glimpse of his reflection.
He now had a white streak in his hair, much like Tommy, who had one of his own though it got lost in his bright golden hair barely visible, unlike Wilburs, which stuck out like a sore thumb. Wilburs left arm was bandaged and could never seem to heal, always having a patch of blood no matter how many times he changed the bandage. The most visible change would be his eyes. Instead of the brown that used to shine golden under the sun, they were now a deep crimson, matching his twin's blood-red eyes.
The bright side of that would be that he looked more like his twin. That would be the only bright side to everything.
Climbing up the ladder, Wilbur entered the kitchen where Phil, Tommy, and to his surprise, Techno were. Phil was setting the plates down, as Techno and Tommy held a conversation
Judging by how Tommy's small white wings fluttered, the gremlin was excited about whatever he saying. Wilbur, making no sound at all, made his way to the empty seat beside Techno.
Taking a seat, Wilbur waited for the table to be set, not missing how Tommy's wing's twitched or how Techno's hands tightened, so he could quickly go to his room. Or take a smoke. Either was fine.
Phil quickly sat down, opened the lid to the pot in the middle, revealing cooked potatoes to absolutely nobody's surprise. Techno had most likely told Phil to cook potatoes. Techno had always had a thing for potatoes, whether it be planting them or simply eating them, he could never get enough. Grabbing a small portion of food, Wilbur began eating, the only sound being the cutlery as they ate.
"Y'know, I can see the resemblance now, it's kind of freaky how alike you are now that you have red eyes," Tommy said bluntly, looking in between Techno and Wilbur. Two pairs of red eyes met bright blue ones.
Clearing his throat, Techno spoke. "We're twins Tommy, we're bound to look alike." Tommy took another bite, not even bothering to swallow before he spoke.
"Still fucking freaky." Phil lightly slapped Tommy's arm, signalling him to swallow before he talked. Feeling out of place Wilbur stayed quiet, focused on his food. He wanted to practically inhale his food if that meant getting out of here fast, but he knew he couldn't just eat fast only a week after he came back to life. That would most likely end up being a horrible experience, ending up with him either throwing up or getting sick. Or both in that specific order.
Wilbur took another bite, ignoring the ugly scars covering his hands. He could feel eyes on him, making him more and more uncomfortable by the second, he managed to keep himself from squirming under their gaze, his attention solely on his food.
"Wil?" He lifted his head, looking at Phil, who wore a sheepish smile. Well, that's not good news. "I thought I should let you know that I'm going to be working on the room you're staying in, I need to rebuild it. I'm sure Techno has space in the other house, I think the basements are free."
Of course, he should leave so he could become a burden on someone else. Against his better judgement, Wilbur shook his head. " I was thinking of just moving out. I figured I should find more...permanent living conditions."
The silence that consumed them was everlasting until Techno spoke up. "I have an extra room, you don't have to leave if you're not really up for it." he showed no emotion as he focused on his food, but you could pick up the slightest edge of concern in his monotone voice.
Wilbur wanted to say yes to Techno's offer so badly, but he couldn't, he was an adult, for prime's sake! He had to get his shit together. Shaking his head, he politely declined the offer. "I would love to stay with you Techno, but I can't just stay dependent on you or anyone for that fact. Thank you for the offer though."
Putting his empty plate in the sink, Wilbur retreated down the ladder, feeling all eyes on him.
"I just want to stay with you, Will!" Tommy couldn't seem to understand what the problem was, why was Wilbur suddenly so stuck on the fact that he had to leave tonight. He could depart tomorrow or never.
The bitch wouldn't even let Tommy go with him. "Wilbur!"
Zipping up a duffle bag with things Wilbur would need, Wilbur stood up, throwing it over his shoulder. "I don't have time for this Tommy, I need to find a place where I can stay, and then set up a camp for the night." He walked past Tommy opening up a chest and drawing out netherite weapons and armour. It was weird, to say the least.
Sure, Tommy had seen growing up as a child how Phil was training both Technoblade and Wilbur, both of who grew up to be great warriors. The thing was, where Technoblade was fine with wearing armour, the Wilbur Tommy knew, barely was ever seen wearing it, Wilbur did have a sword or a weapon on him at all times but, he always preferred to sticking with his words before it turned into a bloody mess.
He heard a clatter of weapons as he watched Wilbur sheath a sword to his one side and a crossbow to the other. A few other weapons along with full armour which was put into another empty duffle bag as it was zipped closed.
"Wilbur, I can come with you!" Wilbur let out a soft sigh shaking his head and putting the other bag across his shoulders. Tommy was sure he would have killed the man if it wasn't for the fact that it was Wilbur. Said man stretched out his wings, which were different from how Tommy remembered them, but then again, so was Wilbur.
"I need to figure something out myself. Not to mention if I take you with me to different places in the middle of the night when I have no place to stay, Phil would have my head. They care about you, Tommy." The ' and not about me' was left unsaid but, Wilbur was sure Tommy picked up on it.
"Why don't you leave in the morning then?"
"I can't, the brighter it is outside, the more chances I have of getting seen. I don't know about you, but I certainly don't want people to know about me until I have a place I can guard and secure for myself. I would be a sitting duck outside if I tell them now."
Tommy understood what the man was saying, however, he still didn't explain why Tommy himself couldn't come with him. Such a big man like him didn't need any protection. He dealt with Dream's bullshit, he can surely deal with some mobs. "You can just contact me on the communicator, Tommy."
He watched as his older brother climbed up the ladder with all his stuff, reluctantly, Tommy followed.
Phil and Techno were still at the table, laughing quietly whilst they spoke. Hearing footsteps, both heads turned towards Wilbur, who was already at the front door, opening it.
"Where are you going, Wil?"
Wilbur directed his red eyes to Phil, who stood up walking towards him, Techno not far behind.
"I'm leaving, I figured it was better to leave at night when not many people are outside to see me." They both understood what he meant. If Wilbur was seen by anyone they would most likely kill him on the spot, he wouldn't be able to defend himself much, since he had his bags on him.
"Leaving without a goodbye?" Phil reached over, enveloping Wilbur into a hug, Phil's black wings circling Wilbur. The man couldn't help himself from stiffening at the gesture. He could tell Phil noticed by how quickly he got away from him and the disappointed look on his face since he didn't return the embrace. He hated that look. It was the look that he got when Techno would beat him in the smallest of things, It was the look he got when he could never match Tommy's energy. It was the look he always got as a child. A child who wanted nothing more than his father's approval. "I'll see you soon, mate."
Wilbur nodded, turning to look at his brothers. One wore an indifferent expression, except for the small wave, and the other had an angry look, Wilbur might have even said his little brother was pouting. Tipping a nod in each of their direction, Wilbur shuffled out the front entrance and out toward the chilling breeze.
The brown-haired man walked out towards the stables, leading an unclaimed horse out. The tall horse was pearly black with a light brown pattern running down its face. It neighed quietly as Wilbur fixed the armour around it, fixing the saddle on top.
His family watched quietly as Wilbur swiftly swung his leg over the horse's back, grabbing onto the reins as the horse raised onto its hind legs with a neigh of excitement, Wilbur tapped the side of the horse once it calmed down and within a second, rode out into the night, without even giving a glance over his shoulders.
Phil was the first to retire, returning to the warmth of the cabin. Tommy and Techno, however, stood as they observed Wilbur ride out into the night towards the forest. The light of the moon, leaving a silhouette of the man as he entered the darkness of the forest. The two brothers looked out until there was a mere dot of movement along with the trees.
A hand found Tommy's shoulder, looking up, he saw Techno with an unreadable expression, slowly guiding them towards the unoccupied hut. Shaking out of his trance, Tommy walked into the warmth of Techno's cabin, stepping towards the ladder, the hand was taken off his shoulder to close the door.
When Technoblade looked back, he found Tommy heading down to his room. Sighing, Technoblade took off his cape and armour, heading towards his room. Placing his crow n on the bedside table, Techno laid down, drawing the covers over him. He knew he wouldn't be able to sleep.
But it didn't hurt to try.
The only sound that consumed the darkness of the forest was the echoing of hooves as the horse raced through the trees.
Wilbur could hear in the distance as more mobs came around as the night rose. Quickly, he unclipped his crossbow from his belt, loading it up as he scanned the area for any potential threat.
It had gotten colder and colder as the minutes went by, Wilbur wasn't complaining though. The limbo was far colder, it wasn't the cold you could get rid of by sitting next to a fire. No, it was the cold that seeped through your body making you numb from the inside until you could feel nothing at all, no emotion, no touch, no nothing.
A few zombies appeared up from his right, catching Wilbur's attention, shifting the reins into his left hand, Wilbur shot the crossbow multiple times, killing the zombies.
It was going to get worse as the night went by, Wilbur wasn't looking forward to it. He either needed to set up a camp or find a village. He shouldn't be too far away from a village, he had been riding for a good two hours, if not more. There should be one coming up soon.
Just as expected, a village came into sight, the torches lit up, lighting a path towards it. A few villagers were seen outside, ushering their children into their houses, others were closing down their small shops. He hooked the crossbow back to his belt, covering it with his trenchcoat not to impose any threat, Wilbur pulled his hood over his head, hiding half his face. Jumping off the horse, Wilbur landed on the ground, holding onto the horse's reins tightly as he led it through the village.
If any news got around about him here, it would end badly for him. He didn't want anyone to know he was back yet. Well, his family knew, and so did Quackity, when they went to see Las Nevadas. He had a feeling Quackity wouldn't tell anyone about him yet. The man would try to keep it to himself until Wilbur became a threat to his country.
A few villagers looked at him weirdly, shutting their door once they saw him. Wilbur ignored them and strolled up to a villager walking away from the crop farm.
"Do you know where I could find a place to stay, just for the night?" The man looked at him, giving him a once over and nodded, waving his hand in a gesture to follow him. Wilbur followed the villager quietly, keeping close to the horse so the creature wouldn't run away.
"Here you are." The man gruffly answered. The place was a small house barely four blocks, beside it was a small stable for his horse, it had hay and water placed to the side. Leading the horse to the stable, Wilbur tied it around a pole securing the horse. Taking off the armour to give the horse some comfort, Wilbur patted it on the neck, picking up both his duffle bags and walking inside the small house.
It had a bed along with a chest filled with some bread and a furnace to its right. It was plain and small, but it was fine. Handing the villager a few emeralds, Wilbur closed the door dropping the duffle bags onto the ground beside his bed.
Pulling out some bread from the chest, Wilbur took a bite as he pulled out a map he was able to get before leaving Phil's place. He would stay here tonight and tomorrow, he would travel again looking for a nice place to build. He didn't want to live somewhere where it would be too cold, it reminded him too much of the horrid train station.
He wanted to get to the hilly areas, but the would mean he would have to pass through the desert. He wasn't looking forward to it, except it was the best route to go through. The only issue being he would have to pass through a large body of water. That meant he would have to get a boat big enough for him to bring his horse with him. Those would be a few uncomfortable days. Still, he would be far away from Phil and his brothers, it would be worth it.
Folding the map back into his pocket, he unhooked his crossbow and sword, placing them to his side, still in reach.
He took off his coat, throwing it over the duffle bags and laid down on the bed under the thin blankets. It wasn't warming him in the slightest, ending up with him deciding to use his trench coat as a blanket over it.
He wondered how easy this trip would be with his wings. He could fly, at least he hoped he could. Phil had covered him from the explosion back in the button room, but only his wings had managed to survive without harm. He wanted to see if he could fly, but it scared him.
The thought that he could fly made him feel free, and after so many years in limbo, it made him feel as though he didn't deserve it. That he tried, everything would crash around him, and he would be in that fucking train station again.
Reaching in his coats pocket, he pulled out a packet and lighter, grabbing a cigarette from the box he placed back in his coat. The small window to his side opened with a creak and twist as he sat up and lit the cigarette up. The smell of nicotine filled up his senses as the smoke filed out the opened window.
After a few hits, he dropped the butt of the cigarette on the floor and smashed it with his black boot.
A few minutes later laid down, going back under the warmth of his coat. The never-ending pain in his chest, right over the scar, became more apparent as he stared up at the ceiling. The minutes ticked to hours. Eventually, his eyes drifted shut.
He fell asleep, one hand still resting on the hilt of the sword leaning against his bed.
