Work Text:
What do you buy for an Angel?
Dean laughed out loud at the actual absurdity of the question. He closed his eyes and massaged his temples and tried to actually think of a gift Cas would like.
And of course Dean couldn’t ask him what he wanted. Eileen already tried that. He hit her with the super basic, cliche, heartfelt… “I’ve already got everything I could ever want or need.”
And of course he would be happy with anything anyone got him, because he's Cas. He would smile and say he loved it, probably actually mean it, and then he would cherish it forever. Or something sappy along the same lines.
And of course he couldn’t just get him nothing. Well he could, and Cas wouldn’t even bat an eye, but he couldn’t because… well plenty of reasons.
The main one being he was the absolute love of Dean Winchester’s life and he had to find something that was perfect and awesome and just screamed how much this goofy beautiful loving amazing angel meant to him.
Why did that have to be so hard?

“…and we got Cas this.” Sam said, showing Dean the little planter box, with seed packets for all the honey bees favorite flowers. Dean frowned. That was a perfect gift for Cas. He loved nature, he loved plants, he obviously loved bees. Why didn’t he think of bees? Everyone else had!
To go along with his bee garden, Jody hand picked him some honey from a beekeeper friend's hives. Alex got him a beeswax alchemy book. Claire and Jack went together and got him some bee slippers with a yellow robe to match, and a mug that had a bee wearing a cowboy hat and said “BeeHaw”. Donna even knitted him a yellow and black striped scarf. Dean didn’t even know Donna could knit.
“This sucks…” Dean grumbled. A single frustrated tear dropped down his face. Miracle, sensing the tension pouring off Dean as pets do, walked over and laid his head in the hunters lap. “I just want to show him how much I care… ya know, boy?” The dog looked up at him as if he actually understood.
“I do know how much you care.” Cas said from the doorway, causing Dean to jump.
Don’t have to worry about finding a gift if I’m dead from a heart attack! Dean thought as he turned to glare at the angel. “Dammit Cas!”
“My apologies.” Cas smiled and crossed the room to sit on the bed with Dean. He took one of Dean’s hands and lifted it to his lips. “You know you don’t have to buy me anything. Especially not if it is going to upset you. And besides…” Dean sighed and rolled his eyes, knowing what was coming. “…I have all I could ever want already.”
“Yeah. You keep saying that.”
“Because it’s true, Dean. I have all our friends and family, who have always welcomed me with loving and open arms. I have Sam and Eileen and their new baby coming. I have Jack. I have you.” He lifted his hand to Dean’s cheek, holding it firmly in place so he couldn’t look away. “Dean finally getting to be with you has given me so much to be happy and thankful for… I couldn’t ask for anything else. So please don’t let the stress of finding some material item bring you down. I have waited too long to see you at peace, for it to be ruined over that. Ok?”
Dean just stared. You smooth talking sonofabitch. He thought. Instead of even attempting to find words he just leaned in and placed a tender kiss on Cas’ lips. “Man, I love you.” He whispered against them.

Dean was more satisfied with himself than he had ever been, ever. He filed it down until it was smooth, then polished and shined it until he could see himself in it.
Slipping in onto his finger to better inspect, he grinned. Because he knew he had really gotten something that was perfect and awesome and just screamed how much this goofy beautiful loving amazing angel meant to him. Cas was going to love this gift.
