Work Text:
Marinette and Stephanie dated for months before the rest of the Waynes realized that Marinette knew about their family…hobby.
It was chaos, and Marinette, Steph, Jason, and Plagg loved every second of it.
But the only thing that really changed after that, beside the fact that they were all more loose-lipped around her, was that Marinette was finally able to visit the Batcave.
Steph took her there a couple of days after everyone finally calmed down, and it was the first time Marinette was finally able to look at her girlfriend’s batgirl suit properly.
“Babe, we need to talk,” she started, staring at the costume and oblivious to the panic she set off in Steph.
“What?” Steph squeaked, turning toward Marinette.
“Yes. I love you, I really do, but I can’t stay silent anymore,” Marinette said seriously, turning around to look Steph in the eyes. “Why the cape?!”
Steph’s brain froze, hearing the words but not registering. She blinked, relief rushing through her, her girlfriend really didn’t pay attention to how her words could be interpreted out of context. A context that was only in her head.
Apparently she stayed silent too long, because Marinette grabbed her hands before continuing.
“Listen, I don’t want to go all Edna Mode on you, but she kinda had a point,” she told her with more seriousness that Steph thought the situation really deserved. “And I need to know. What is it? Does Bruce coerce you to have one? Because I can and will fight him for you, you know that?”
“He— He didn’t,” Steph admitted with regret. “But I wish he did just to watch you fight him.”
“Aww, I can still fight him, it’s not going to be hard finding a reason to punch him, babe,” Marinette said with a fond smile, before getting back to a serious expression. “But if so, why?! Because it can’t be useful! Aren’t capes a hindrance, when it comes to fighting? I can’t find a single good value to having a cape while fighting criminals in back alleys.”
“Um, it, uh,” Steph muttered, looking around her. “It helps blend in the dark!”
“Oh?” Marinette told her, looking at her with a raised eyebrow. She sighed, rolling her eyes. “It’s for the aesthetic, isn’t it.”
“Oh my god yes!” Steph exclaimed, waving her arms around. “Do you know how badass my silhouette is when I jump in the moonlight?! Or when I stand in the way of a street light?!”
“Mon dieu,” Marinette muttered, putting a hand on her face to hide her smile. “You Bats are so dramatic.”
“But you love me anyway,” Steph said with a smug smile, putting an arm on her shoulder and pulling her into a side hug.
“I really do,” Marinette said with a fond smile, putting her arms around her girlfriend’s waist.
“That’s a relief to hear, I thought you were gonna break up for a second there,” she told her with a chuckle.
“What?” She said, jerking her head back to look up at her. “Why?!”
“Hon, you started the conversation with “We need to talk” and then added a little “I can’t take it anymore”,” she said with a smile, raising an eyebrow incredulously. “You know, for flavors.”
“Oh. Yeah, point. I could have handled this conversation better,” Marinette mumbled with a contrite smile. “But, you know how I get when it’s about—”
“Fashion,” Steph interrupted with a grin. “I know, and I love you anyway.”
