Work Text:

Grogu was so glad to be back with his dada for Life Day. And what made it even better was his dad was going to have some friends over at his and the other Mandalorians’ ship that they lived on. Grogu couldn’t wait. He wanted to get them all something super special for Life Day.

But Grogu didn’t know what.

Except Boba. He had already gotten Boba a gift. It was very good and would make him look almost as pretty as dada and Cara. But not quite. But it would help him. He couldn’t wait to give it to him.

And if he didn’t like it, Grogu would make him regret it. He would eat all his snacks as punishment.

But he would like it.

He still had to get other people things. He already got Dada and his Mandalorian friends things but the others needed presents at the party. They needed special gifts. Life Day things.

But Grogu didn’t know what to get.

At least not until his dad took him out to town. And then in that busy town he saw a shop with the most beautiful things.

Life Day sweaters.

They were beautiful. Almost like art. They were so colorful and some of them even lit up. They all were so different and looked so warm and cozy. They were perfect.

Grogu cooed. “Dada!!” he said, one of the only words that he knew. Dada was more likely to let him have what he wanted if he said this. Grogu then pointed at the sweaters.

Hopefully his dad would realize just how beautiful they were.

Grogu wanted one himself and he would wear it always. He would never take it off.

Ever.

Grogu kept pointing at the sweaters and then tried to run to them. That was of course when Dad decided to pick him up.

“Kid, you don’t want those,” Dad said. “They’re ugly.”

Ugly?! Was his dad blind?! They were the most beautiful clothes that he had ever seen! He knew that his dad liked beskar but he should be able to appreciate beautiful art like the sweaters!

“No! Want!” Grogu said saying a couple other words he had learned. He wanted the sweaters. No, he needed to have the sweaters. Dad’s party would fail if he didn’t get these.

Dad sighed. “Okay, we can get you one.”

Good. At least Grogu thought it was good but then his dad only wanted him to have one. Grogu needed to get sweaters for everyone.

He would have to find a way to get them all. But he did wear the Life Day sweater that his dad had bought him. He planned to wear it always even though he could tell through the Force that Dad didn’t like it. Dad didn’t like beautiful things.

The rest of the day, Grogu tried to come up with a solution. Eventually he knew that he would have to sneak out at night and get the sweaters with the Force. Since Master Luke had been training him, he had gotten better at it. He just had to make sure Dad and the other Mandos didn’t catch him leaving.

So he was going to have to wait until night and he would have to be very careful. Dad would not approve of what he was doing. Not at all.

And if Dad found out he was missing, he would be very worried. But Grogu was going to do the best he could to get the sweaters and then come back fast. And he did manage to get out for the ship. He did get close to being caught from Axe, but he hid behind a trash can and Axe hadn’t seen him, being half asleep.

Grogu ran as fast as he could with his little legs as soon as he got out there. The store was closed when he got out but it was easy now that he had better control of the Force. The shop wasn’t big but there was so much to see, especially now that Dad wasn’t here making him not look long.

Eventually Grogu found the perfect sweaters for everyone. They were so colorful and beautiful. Art! Maybe Dad would finally see it. Grogu knew Dad wouldn’t want him to steal so Grogu left a cookie as payment. Grogu had taken a bite out of it earlier but it should be more than enough. Grogu smiled because they would be so happy when they saw the cookie in the morning.

Grogu then left with the sweaters he had bought. He used the Force to move them. But when he got back to the ship, he had only just closed the door when his dad walked in. Even though he had his helmet on, Grogu could tell Dad was very tired and half asleep. Grogu used the Force to hide the sweaters under something.

“There you are,” Dad said, yawning. “I was worried you were up to no good.”

Grogu did his best to look innocent.

“Stars, you did something. What did you do?”’ Dad said, groaning.

Grogu still tried to look innocent and made a cooing noise.

Dad sighed and shook his head but then picked him up to put Grogu to sleep.

***

It wasn’t too hard to hide the sweaters especially since Bo had been sick. Dad, Axe, and Koska didn’t look as closely. However, the day before the party someone saw them.

It was Bo who was paler than usual and looked like she might still be ill.

“What are these doing here?” Bo asked Grogu.

Grogu once again tried to look innocent. He tilted his head to the side.

Bo sighed. “I probably don’t want to know.”

And that had been that. Still, he had worried she would mention the sweaters because of how beautiful they were. Not everyone could hate art like Dad. But maybe she also had bad taste.

But at least she didn’t tell anyone. And eventually the Life Day party arrived. Grogu could hardly wait to give out the presents.

And so he had hurried and grabbed them. Dad and some of his friends were playing Sabaac and drinking the nasty smelling drink. Alcohol. Once Grogu had accidentally tasted his dad’s. It was very gross.

“The little one!” Greef Karga said. “Has Mando and the Jedi—“

“Din has a name,” Bo muttered. “You better not call the rest of us Mando.”

“That would be confusing if we were all called Mando,” Axe said. “How would we know who he was talking to? Would like Din be Male Mando, but then I would also be Male Mando? Would I be Male Mando Two? Bo could be bossy Mando and Koska could be Mando with the good hair.”

“I’m not bossy,” Bo said, crossing her arms over her chest.

“Sure…” Axe said.

“It’s what he always goes by,” Cara said, going back to the topic of Dad’s name.

Grogu let out a coo and then decided to say the best thing. “Dank Ferrik.”

Greef Karga laughed which Grogu knew meant he had done the right thing. Grogu smiled and decided it was time to get the gifts now. So he had them come in with the Force.

“I see he still does the magic hand thing,” Greef Karga said. He laughed.

Dad groaned when he saw the sweaters. “I should have known that he was the one who stole those especially when the shop keepers apparently found a cookie. That is pure Grogu.”

Grogu just looked at him. He wished he could have seen how happy the shop owner had been when he saw what Grogu had left. Sadly, he had not been able to.

But at least now he could see how happy everyone was when they got their sweaters.

First he gave one to Cara. It was very beautiful. It was red and had a giant animal on it as well as lights that shined bright. It also had fake holly on it. She would look beautiful in it. But she was giving the sweater a confused look.

“I’m not going to wear this,” Cara said.

And suddenly when she said that, Grogu wanted to Force choke her again. Why did no one appreciate the beautiful art that was Life Day sweaters? But he knew what Dad would say. Dad didn’t like when he Force choked people.

Master Luke didn’t either. Apparently it was a path to the dark side.

But he knew Luke’s dad had Force choked people. Then again, he had gone to the Dark Side so that might not be the best example.

But Grogu didn’t do anything. All he did was hopefully give Cara a bad look. She put the sweater on.

“You should be more grateful,” Greef Karga said, laughing.

At least someone appreciated them.

Boba Fett gave Greef a horrible look. He must be jealous that he didn’t have his Life Day sweater yet. Grogu should probably give his next.

And so he did give it to Boba Fett. He had given him a bright pink one since he thought that would be a good color. It had a lot of birds on it and also had lights. Boba Fett stared at it.

And then Grogu realized what was wrong. He had forgotten to give him his other gift. And so he threw the eyebrow pencil at him. It hit him in the face and then fell to the table.

“What is this?” Boba asked as he looked at it.

Fennec laughed. “That’s an eyebrow pencil.”

Boba Fett frowned and looked even more confused.

“You use that to—”

“I know what it’s used for, Fennec,” Boba said. “But I don’t know why he would give it to me.”

“Well, it might help,” Fennec said, which caused Boba Fett to glare at her, even though it would be good for him. He thought that was a great gift for Boba.

Grogu gave the sweaters to everyone. None of them seemed to appreciate art as much as him, but maybe he shouldn’t have been surprised. Finally he gave Dad his. It said “Best Dad in the Galaxy.” Dad smiled and then ruffled Grogu’s hair.

“Thanks, Kid,” Dad said.

Grogu cooed and babbled. His friends might not appreciate art as much as him, but he was still glad that he had given them these. One day they would realize what good gifts they were.

He just knew it.

And even if they didn’t, he was still glad to be here with his dad and all of their friends.
