Chapter Text

I don’t often tell people what I do for work. Other than maid, of course. Not that people think very highly of maids, but it is better to say that than nothing. If they give me too much grief, I can then mention my employer.

But that’s reserved to those who give me grief.

I have been in this job for some time now. I have watched both young masters grow up. Which should not say a lot, because I wasn’t much older than Master Kaiba to start with. I suppose you can say you watch someone grow up even if you are about at the same point in life too.

I probably got in at the best moment too. I wouldn’t have been hired by Master Kaiba himself, but I was definitely within the interests of Kaiba OG, the disgusting pig. But I was looking for work and the salary was nothing to sneeze at for a seventeen year old girl with not many other prospects. So the arrogant prick hired many young girls and then offed himself, leaving a rather uninterested young Kaiba and a much younger uninterested Kaiba as our masters.

Definitely for the best.

Not that I really liked Master Kaiba at first either. For someone only a year or two younger than myself, he was really creepy. Just not in a way which looked like it would be dangerous to me. At least, not while I didn’t grab any attention to myself. As long as I did my job, I would be fine. And he would continue to be a creep of his own sort.

The Young Master was much more palatable, for the most part. Sure, there were moments when he was a child (because he was) or he tried to hard to be like his brother (which he didn’t do so well at), but mainly he was the Kaiba the rest of us liked to serve. Because the worst he could do was ignore us. No insane demands. No being a creep. Just a kid.

While the Young Master was our favourite, Master Kaiba certainly became the most entertaining. Not at first, mind, but eventually. Not right after the coma either, where he disappeared as though he was aware of everything else that had happened while he was comatose.

I was not working the day of the break in when the Young Master went missing. I only came in to continue tending to a young man who probably should have been in a hospital, but had explicit instructions not to leave his manor.

I wasn’t kept in the loop. None of us were. We simply kept up house and waited for their return.

And return they did.

I must admit, I was rather disappointed at first when the masters returned. Because we had so much free time after making sure the house was in tip top shape that I could do a lot of things, both on and off the clock.

There weren’t as many of us since Kaiba OG died. Master Kaiba didn’t feel the need to have the archaic precise hierarchy of maids as his father. And Master Kaiba had no need for a still room maid. Not that Kaiba OG did either, I think he did it to look like he was even more important than he already was when he had guests.

I completed more of my education while the masters were gone. The Housekeeper allowed for it, especially as the kitchen staff didn’t have much to do. We were paid to all be there. Without anyone other than ourselves to cause a mess, us housemaids would finish up fast, the kitchen maids would have gotten some practice of their own in under the Cook, and then there was nothing to do.

Cook used to be a teacher, so she helped me and the few other girls around my age with our work. I was the only one who didn’t go to school anymore. I could afford it now, that I had a job, but the job required me to be here most often during regular school hours. Which I had established back when Master Kaiba had been in his coma.

I would have gone to night school during this time, if I had known how little both Kaibas were planning on being at home for the next year. Not that Master Kaiba had done much of that beforehand. He was to be a workaholic, like his father. After a few very strange attempts, there weren’t any parties or gatherings at the house.

I’m not sure what most of us were hired for, to be honest, but he did not let us go. I had enough experience and poise to become a lady’s maid elsewhere, if I wanted. But who would, or could, pay as well as a Kaiba? Plus, there was all this free time I had. Which I could finish my education in.

Rock on.

Outside my disappointment, I recognized it was good they had come back. Eventually we would have lost our jobs, if neither Kaiba was around to manage finances.

Master Kaiba returning with the Young Master was for the best, but I didn’t realize how little either would be at home from that point onward. How we would all continue to have plenty of free time for a bit longer.

And how I, almost a non-entity, would witness the world famous Kaiba Seto become a completely different person.

Notes:

This is the only chapter for some time which will actually focus on the maid. She deserves an introduction.
