Chapter Text

“Just a regular Wednesday in our city. Or if would be if not for the-“

Tobey McCallister stands atop one of Faircity’s many rooftops with a remote control in his hands and a laptop by his feet. His many robots or robits as he loves to say, surround him, wreaking havoc and being a general nuisance. But Tobey does not look so pleased. Instead he looks rather nervous and like he’s anticipating something.

“Come on Wordgirl, when are you going to show?” Tobey murmurs to himself.

“Yet another classic Tobey plot is it? How do you plan to destroy her to get her to date you this time?” The Narrator asks.

“Oh please, none of that. Today is simple, I just want-“

The sound of Wordgirl flying in interrupts the boy genius. She stops before him, hovering ever heroically.

“Hello, Tobey! Allow me to take care of the robots for you!” Wordgirl says. She then flies off and makes quick work of his robots, beating them all without so much as a sweat.

Tobey’s heart skips a beat at the dazzling WORDGIRL! and her incredible super strength and fighting abilities. Just one of the many traits that makes her so spectacular. Truly, the one and only girl for him.

Wordgirl flies back, and lands atop the rooftop, in front of Tobey. “Looks like I’m gonna have to call Mommy on you, McCallister!” She exclaims.

“Oh right, before you do that, allow me to show you the reason I was anticipating you.” Tobey nervously grabs the laptop at his feet in order to show her whatever’s on the screen.

Anticipate? That means you were expecting me to come here? You were planning for me?” Wordgirl asks.

“Quite precisely, yes. I was indeed anticipating you! Look here.” Tobey shyly holds up his laptop screen.

It’s his Minecraft world.

“Huh?” Wordgirl stares in confusion. “You got all these giant robots to fight me just so I would show up and you could show me your Minecraft world?”

“Yes indeed.”

“So all that was just to get my attention?”

“Precisely.”

“Just to show me your Minecraft world?”

“Here, did you want to see the red stone? Look here.”

Wordgirl looks at the screen, and woah.

“That is a lot of redstone. Wow, that seems to go on for miles.” The Narrator exclaims.

“What does all of this do?” Wordgirl asked.

“Oh, it’s actually a working computer. Look here!” Tobey says and flies his character over to the computer. It’s a tall monitor and keyboard made out of Minecraft blocks. “You can solve simple math questions by typing them out on the keyboard and voila!” He demonstrates by having his character fly on the keyboard to type out 1 plus 1.

“Wow! Tobey! One plus one is two.” Wordgirl stares at the screen in amazement as she watches the computer in the video game in the computer solve the equation.

“Of course, in our case, one plus one is us.” Tobey says under his breath.

“What was that?” Wordgirl pretends not to hear him.

“Nothing!” Tobey says. “Anyways, what are your thoughts?”

“Wow, Tobey, I don’t know what to say. This is all pretty amazing. You’re gonna go to a really really good college someday, because this is super impressive.” Wordgirl admits. And she thinks to herself, wow, is he really using up all his talents to build evil robots?

Tobey blushes. “You think so?”

“Yeah, I’m still going to call your mom on you, but you should really consider inventing other stuff like that. Maybe robots that help cure cancer or something.”

“Why yes. I should’ve thought of that earlier. Oh well.” Tobey says dreamily. He’s swooning and his heart is doing somersaults.

“You don’t care that I’m about to call your mom on you?” Wordgirl asks, pulling out the Mrs. Mcallister speed dial phone.

“Not at all. Your approval for now is all I need.” Tobey says like a massive simp and then his mom comes by and the usual routine ensues.

“And thus the day is saved?” The Narrator announces in disbelief.

When they go to school, the next day, Tobey is sitting at his desk with a dopey grin on his face.

Violet leans in to whisper to Becky.

“What’s up with him? I heard you guys fought yesterday.”

“Oh, it wasn’t much of a fight. I just defeated his robots. He showed me his Minecraft world, and then his mom grounded him. That was it.” Becky Botsford admits.

“He showed you his Minecraft world? Was it, like, full of robots that try to kill you?” Violet asks.

“No, he had this working computer he built out of redstone. It was really cool. It solves math equations and everything.” Becky explains.

“Wow, I would’ve thought he would have tried to trap you in Minecraft and make you fight the robots in there or something. Because if you die in Minecraft, you die in real life.”

Becky shook her head.

“Or maybe he would’ve made you fight Herobrine. I don’t know. You know, Herobrine took all the leaves off my trees in my Minecraft world.” Violet adds. “He’s like a major menace.”

“I think that’s just like a bug. I don’t think Herobrine did that.” Becky says.

“Okay, it’s good that you don’t believe. That means Herobrine has less power over you.” Violet replies.

“Anyways, yesterday made me realize that Tobey is capable of quite a lot. If he wasn’t always building evil robots he could actually help out a lot.” Becky explains.

“Yeah, like he could make cool inventions for you to fight the bad guys. And then you could play Minecraft together.”

Becky rolls her eyes. “That first part isn’t such a bad idea. Maybe I could ask him as Wordgirl. He might be down for that.”

“You know, I think if you agreed to play Minecraft with him as Wordgirl, maybe he’d stop being evil. I think he just wants Wordgirl’s attention.”

“Yep, he certainly does. He’s always anticipating her.” Becky replies, staring at Tobey while trying to formulate a plan.

“I think, and just hear me out,” Violet begins. “I think he has a crush on Wordgirl.”

“A crush on Wordgirl?” Becky looks at Violet and then to Tobey who is still staring off into space with a lovestruck gaze, and then back to Violet. Becky laughs and pretends she doesn’t know. “No, I don’t think so.”

Notes:

Bob was originally in this fanfic, but he didn't do anything, so I wrote him out.
:(
Anyways, this fanfic is based off of this art I saw on Twitter.

https://twitter.com/ufemmeo/status/1490782935821295616?s=20&t=6ruOXfqcHKjS207iqQEWdg

It is SUPER cute. And I'm digging the dynamic that Tobey has with Wordgirl/Becky. I just find it so cute, that I had to write a fanfic. I didn't watch Wordgirl all that much as a kid. I did watch PBS, but I always preferred Cartoon Network or Disney Channel. Still, I do remember seeing it from time to time. I went and watched a few episodes and it is very funny. Got into this from this YouTube video that was on my recommended page, and now I am trapped in this headspace. Yay.

Also, it is very weird, because this is happening at the same time of the Earthbound resurgence. And Jeff from Earthbound is another character in the boy genius archetype who falls into the opposite end of the spectrum. He is just very shy. So I'm seeing art of these two characters concurrently, and it's like from one extreme to the other.
