Work Text:
"John!!!"
Rodney knocks repeatedly on the front door of his boyfriend's quarters. He doesn't have to knock, but he likes to for dramatic effect.
"Come in."
The door opens and his blue gaze meets the absolute mess of the other's living space. "Did a hurricane hit in here?" he asks, a chuckle escaping his lips. He would never ever let his quarters get this messy, if he did, he'd set off his claustrophobia.
He pops up from the far side of his bed, his hazel eyes set on his boyfriend. "Yes Rodney, that's exactly what happened," he replies with clear sarcasm in his tone. John is not very materialistic but he has enough personal belongings to, combined with some of Rodney's stuff, manage to made his room look like a bomb went off in it. His civilian clothes, along with his air force and SGC issued clothes litter the floor; every article from t-shirts to socks to boxers. The dresser drawers are open and emptied. His personal garbage bin is knocked over. Papers are scattered all over his desk. Books cover the bare mattress and the bed sheets are piled on the floor.
The scientist lets out a half amused sigh as he picks up a pair of his sweatpants, putting them back in a dresser drawer. "I have to ask, why did you decide to Spring clean your room when we have five minutes to get into position to give Teyla a birthday surprise?"
The colonel stands up, running his hand through his hair. "In case it isn't obvious, sweetheart, it seems I have misplaced the gift I got for Teyla," his voice cracks. "Wait, it's almost 15:00 already?" he half whines. "Before you ask, yes I did take my ADHD medication today," He adds, shaking the almost empty Adderall bottle in the other man's face.
"Alright, alright," the head of the science contingency flashes the military commander a sympathetic smile. He should have expected that his boyfriend would lose track of time. "Elizabeth, it's Rodney. Don't call Telya in for another ten minutes, John's having trouble finding Teyla's present. I'm going to help him look now," he says into his earpiece. He pauses for a moment to make sure the expedition CO heard him. He brings his attention back to John once she tells him they'll wait for them.
"Thanks for helping me," Sheppard pokes his head out from his walk in closet, shooting a classic smile-smirk at his boyfriend then disappears into the closest again.
"No problem," McKay replies happily, sorting the pile of books that are on the bed.
John comes out of the closet empty handed. "Honey, I'm so awful- I don't understand where the gift can be, I could have sworn I put it on the top shelf... or in my socks and underwear drawer... or left it on my desk..." he glaces at Rodney, frowning. "God damn it, I shouldn't be misplacing things. I'm an adult! I'm in my thirties!" he half cries, plopping his behind on the now somewhat tidier mattress. He leans to rest his head on his boyfriend's shoulder but he lands on the bed instead. "Oomph."
Rodney's moved further up on the bed, near the pillows. "Try not to be too hard on yourself, It's gotta be in here somewhere and I doubt the others mind waiting." Rodney is listening to John as he vents. He does his best actually listen instead of tuning it out or bluntly dismissing it like he does when most others attempt to vent to him. His hand under a pillow feels what he thinks is a little box covered in wrapping paper. Sure enough, that's exactly what it is.
"Oh my Ancients, thank you!!" the colonel cheers, moving so he can wrap his arms around his chief scientist. He gives him a quick kiss on the cheek. "You- argh, I love you so much, nerd."
The engineer flashes his classic McKay grin at his team leader. "I love you too, dork." He's hugging the other back. "C'mon, let's not leave our friends waiting any longer," he chuckles. He then gives the other man a quick kiss on the top of his head before getting back on his feet.
John's face is as red as a tomato. "Yeah, let's go." He's still smiling as he gets up off the bed. He grabs McKay's hand in his right one and holds Telya's birthday present in his left one. "Elizabeth, Rodney found it for me, we're coming," he says into his earpiece.
The door closes behind them as the colonel and the scientist go to meet up with their friends, hand in hand.
