Chapter Text
Merlin woke slowly. Gently rising to consciousness. Lulled by a soft and steady warmth cocooning him everywhere. He gave a content sigh as he dragged his eyes open, feeling utterly relaxed and content…
Both of which ceased completely as Merlin took in the fact that he wasn’t in his own bed or room. Feeling his heart rate pick up, he also began to realise that someone’s arm was heavy around his waist. He swivelled his head around, panicking, before recognising the room. It was Arthur’s . What was he doing in Arthur’s room? In Arthur’s bed? …Oh God that meant behind him was…
Sure enough, as he craned his head backward, the hulking form of his Prince was laid behind him, looking considerably bulkier than he last remembered. Merlin turned back round, willing himself not to hyperventilate. What was going on? He didn’t… sleep with Arthur did he? He wouldn’t have. He couldn’t feel any remnants of any such activities anyway… Too busy trying to breathe deeply, he didn’t notice Arthur pull him himself from sleep until the alpha had dragged him back to his chest, turning Merlin over so that he was eye to eye with his master.
“Um… h-hi.” Merlin managed to stutter out, desperately confused and anxiety ridden. He was taken aback when Arthur’s face creased with worry, his warrior-hardened hands coming up to caress Merlin’s face softly, as if he was a delicate piece of China.
“Darling what’s wrong?” Arthur murmured, perplexing Merlin even further, “Do you not feel well? You seem slightly shaky.” Arthur finished, picking up one of Merlin’s hands, which indeed, was trembling slightly.
“I-I uh, you, we… what?” Merlin managed to reply, trying not to drown in the calming pheromones Arthur was now sending out, the worry on his face increasing alarmingly.
“Merlin, what's wrong?” Arthur asked urgently, sitting up and taking Merlin with him, his large hands steady on his shoulders. Merlin took a deep breath before replying nervously,
“Uh, w-what am I doing in your bed?” Arthur gave him a strange look but before he could reply Merlin carried on, “Did we- well that is… did we do anything? I… I don’t remember drinking or anything but I’m certain we didn’t do anything… right?” Arthur’s worry seemed to increase tenfold.
“Merlin, I’m getting worried now, what are you going on about?” The alpha reached for Merlin’s forehead, resting the back of his hand against it, and upon finding no worrying temperature, withdrew.
“I mean… why am I in your bed? And…” Merlin paused as he realised something - he could feel his bare legs against the bed, that meant… Sure enough when Merlin lifted the covers slightly, he could see that all that was covering him was an oversized sleep shirt, which he realised smelt faintly of Arthur. He felt his face heat up and embarrassment fell over him. “Oh Gods why am I nearly naked?” He quickly drew the covers up to his chin. He looked up at Arthur who looked so concerned that he looked distraught.
Before saying another word to Merlin he shouted out to the guards outside his door, telling them to fetch Gaius immediately. As Merlin clenched the bed sheets, he realised he could feel slightly-warm metal pressed against his left index finger. He lifted it, only to discover a wedding band and an engagement ring settled there. He watched in fascination as light from the window bounced off the tiny gems embedded in the engagement ring, which he now recognised as intertwining dragons and vines. He looked back up at Arthur, who was watching him with confused curiosity and worry. He saw another flash of light, and he realised as he looked down, that Arthur also had a wedding band on his left finger. Arthur looked down to where Merlin’s gaze was and looked up before reaching for a cord around his neck, holding up the ring that it was threaded through. It was almost identical to Merlin’s, except the gems in his were red, whilst Merlin’s was blue. (And Oh Gods he just realised that Arthur’s very naked chest was on display.)
“Hey, remember when I proposed? I was a mess of nerves and eventually, after I managed to bumble my way through, you told me ‘Yes. Yes with all my heart.’ Do you remember how happy you made me? So Merlin, whatever’s happening right now, it’s okay, alright love? I’m here for you, with all my heart.” Arthur’s face was so open and honest that it made Merlin want to cry, in fact he could feel his eyes stinging, which only proved to further increase the worry on Arthur’s face.
“W-we’re married?” Merlin managed to whisper, still feeling in shock, seeing Arthur’s face crease in alarm. Before either of them could respond, a loud knock rang out from the chamber door, accompanied by a ‘Sire!’. Arthur gave him a long look, before hurriedly pulling his trousers on (Merlin buried his face in his hands - he’d been sat next to a naked Arthur this whole time!) and shucking on a sleep shirt.
“Come in!” Arthur called out. The door swung open and Gaius ambled in, a worried look on his face.
“What’s wrong Sire? I came as soon as I could?” Gaius said, giving the curled up Merlin a worried look. Arthur gently took the physician by the elbow and lead him away slightly, talking in hushed whispers. Merlin took the time to stare around the room. It was the same room but… it was different. There were more flowers on the table and blankets everywhere and… was that a child’s toy? Even Gaius and Arthur looked different… older. Not that he was complaining about Arthur’s treatment of him, in fact, he was quite enjoying it - not that anyone needed to know. At last, the pair turned back to him. Gaius approached.
“Merlin m’boy, how are you feeling?” He asked, setting his medical bag on the bed.
“I-I uh, oh I don’t know, I’m so confused Gaius!” Merlin cried out, unbelievably, finding himself on the brink of tears. Arthur immediately sat next to Merlin, wrapping an arm around him. Merlin, despite finding the gesture odd, unconsciously sank into it.
“Alright Merlin,” the old man soothed, “what are you confused about?”
“Everything! Why-why am I in Arthur’s bed, and-and married to him and why does he look older and why do you look older and why is the room different!” Merlin managed to get out in one breath, conscious of the worried looks he was getting. Gaius gave him a strange look,
“Have you had any bumps to the head recently Merlin? Or fallen or passed out?” Gaius asked, checking his forehead for fever before parting his ward’s hair to check the scalp.
“What? No Gaius.” Merlin responded confusedly, letting Gaius probe his head for any lumps. Upon finding nothing, he made a questioning noise and let up.
“What’s the last thing you remember, Merlin?” Merlin cast his mind back. What had he done yesterday… oh yes that was it!
“Well, I collected some feverfew for you at dawn before serving the Prince his breakfast. Then I helped him into his armour for training, before cleaning his room. Then I did my usual chores before having tea with you, and then I went to bed.” Merlin faced them both, feeling uncomfortable with the astonished looks he was getting. “What?”
“Alright Merlin I’m going to ask you a few questions alright?” Gaius asked, continuing once he got a nod from the boy. “Where do you reside at the moment?”
“In your spare room Gaius.” Merlin replied, giving his mentor a funny look. Merlin felt Arthur’s hands stiffen on his shoulders, only softening when Merlin looked at him.
“And do you have an alpha at the moment?” Gaius asked, casting a wary look at the Prince.
“Gaius you know I’ve never had an alpha.” Arthur let out a choked noise, looking wide eyed at Merlin. Before Merlin could ask him what was wrong, Gaius continued,
“And who is the King at the moment?”
“Uther.” Silence permeated the chambers. Gaius opened his mouth to continue, when the chamber door swung open and a small honey-haired child barreled in, accompanied by a harried looking Gwen and Lancelot.
“I’m so sorry! We tried to keep her occupied but she slipped away when we were playing hide and seek! I’ll take her back out straight away so you can still relax-” Gwen began to ramble, racing after the tottering child.
“Mummy mummy look! Look why I dids with Auntie Gwen!” The three year old shouted, running around to the bed, surprising Merlin when a colourful piece of parchment was shoved in his face. Merlin hesitantly took the parchment, not sure who’s child this was, but not wanting to upset her. She instantly held her arms up, dark blue eyes looking at him expectantly, looking vaguely familiar to him, but unable to place where from. Merlin looked around confused, did he know this child? He looked at Arthur, who’s eyes widened, he shared a panicked look with Gaius before leaping off the bed and coming round the kneel by the little girl,
“Mummy’s not feeling very well at the moment darling, he’ll be able to see you later, but he needs to rest right now okay?” He swiftly picked her up, settling her on his hip, as he took her to the door, Gwen and Lancelot in tow.
“But-but I want to see mummy!” Came a tearful reply. Merlin felt something within him wrench at the tone, not knowing why, but wishing he could ease the little girl’s hurt.
“I know I know sweetheart, but I need you to be brave for mummy okay? He’s not feeling very well and needs his little girl to be really brave, okay?” He heard Arthur respond, deepening Merlin’s confusion.
“Okay, for mummy.” Came the quiet reply. After, frantic whispering was heard between Arthur and Gwen and Lancelot, he stood conversing for about a minute before he eventually bade them goodbye. Merlin looked down at the colourful parchment in his hand, a fond smile overtaking his face as he realised the crudely painted image was Camelot castle. What made him frown was the stick people below it, one was clearly Arthur (if the crown on his huge head was anything to go by) one was the little girl, and if he wasn’t mistaken, then the other… looked like him? But he would’ve remembered meeting her before, and he definitely didn’t. Gaius gave a fond chuckle,
“Ah Elisa will turn into a fine artist yet.” Merlin looked up at him.
“Oh is that the little girl’s name? The one that was just in here?” Merlin asked, curiously. It was like a bucket of ice had been poured over the remaining occupants of the room. Their expressions froze. Merlin felt himself begin to worry, he was clearly missing something. Arthur sat on the bed again, an expression close to… heart break on his face. He reached across and held Merlin’s hand.
“You…you don’t recognise her?” Arthur asked in a croaky voice. Merlin shook his head,
“No… should I?” Arthur hitched his breath. Arthur looked over to Gaius, who gave him a nod.
“Merlin that was our… that was your daughter.” Merlin felt himself freeze.
“Um I don’t think it was. I would know if I had given birth to a whole child.” Merlin laughed uneasily. Arthur shook his head.
“Merlin, what year do you think it is?” Merlin gave him a confused look.
“It’s 524.” He answered easily. Arthur and Gaius were quiet. His mentor spoke this time.
“Merlin, it’s 529.” Merlin was quiet this time.
“What… but… “ Merlin ran a hand through his hair, feeling overwhelmed.
“Arthur ascended the throne in 525. You both mated that same year, and got married the next, 526, when Elisa was also born.” Gaius said gently. Merlin snapped his head towards Arthur, who looked so utterly heartbroken , that Merlin felt something deep down within himself yearn to wipe the look away.
“We-we’re… “ Merlin left the sentence unfinished. Arthur nodded gently before pulling the neck of his shirt aside so Merlin could see the bite on his gland. He picked up Merlin’s hand and placed it on Merlin's own neck, where he could faintly feel a mark over his own gland.
“And she was…” Merlin whispered.
“Yes. That was our daughter.” Arthur whispered back.
“She looks just like you.” Arthur seemed taken aback by that before he leapt forward, wrapping Merlin in a tight embrace. Merlin looked at Gaius in alarm, worried he had offended Arthur, but saw Gaius was only looking fondly at him.
“I believe you said the exact same thing last night m’boy, when we were all dining in the Hall.” Merlin felt himself melt into Arthur’s arms, revelling in how right it felt, like something that had always been missing in his life had been given to him.
“I feel like I’m in a dream.” Merlin murmured, gaining the attention of his mate (Gods he had a mate) and mentor, “It was literally yesterday when I was pining over you and now I… now I have you.” Gaius let out a chuckle at that.
“I still remember all those days you spent in my chambers lamenting Merlin, ‘Why can’t he be my mate Gaius? Why do I like that stupid pompous prat?’” Merlin felt his face begin to flame as he let out an indignant ‘Gaius!’. Arthur let out a laugh, releasing Merlin from his embrace, who let out a soft sound at being released. Arthur smiled at him fondly before turning back to Gaius, a serious look on his face.
“Gaius, do you have any idea what’s wrong?” He asked. Gaius shook his head.
“It doesn’t appear as if he’s sustained a head injury to cause any memory loss. It’s possible he could have been cursed but… maybe it was his own magic?” Gaius responded, a frown on his face.
“What do you mean by my own magic?” Merlin questioned.
“Well… maybe it’s not a fact of memory loss per se, but more… the memories have never been there.” At the confused looks he was receiving, Gaius continued. “Perhaps, Merlin’s magic from 524, sent his mind forward to now, so he only has his memories from then, but his body from now.”
“But… why would it do that, Gaius?” Merlin asked, wringing his hands in the bedsheets.
“I can only guess Merlin. I’ll need to do research before anything else, if we’re going to send you back and get our Merlin back, then we’re going to need all the knowledge we can get.” Merlin gave Gaius a nod as he stood. “I suggest for now, that we inform people that you’ve been cursed with a memory spell. That way if you come across anyone who knows you, but you don’t know, everyone will understand.” Arthur nodded at that,
“I’ll get a page to send the word out.” Arthur responded, walking over to hold the door open for the old physician. They quietly exchanged a few words before the door closed, and Arthur made his way back over to Merlin. Arthur gave Merlin an amused look before reaching over to grasp the bed sheets still held up by his chin, slowly pulling them down to his waist.
“Believe me, it’s nothing I haven’t seen before Mer lin.” Arthur chuckled. Merlin felt himself flush. On that point, Merlin raised his hands, if Gaius was right in assuming that this was his older body, then surely there would be some changes. He turned them over, trying to see if they looked different.
“Now what are you doing?” Arthur exasperatedly. Merlin stuck his tongue out as he tried to concentrate (a trait Arthur most definitely did not find adorable).
“Well, if this is my older body, I’m trying to see what’s different.” Merlin replied.
“Well you’re definitely looking in the wrong place, love.” Arthur pointed out, Merlin felt himself blush at the nickname. Arthur let out a laugh, “My, is there anything that doesn’t embarrass you?” Merlin murmured a ‘Shut up.’ as he slapped his hands to his burning cheeks.
“Well go on then, where should I be looking?” Merlin asked, trying to change the subject. This time it was Arthur’s turn to lightly blush.
“That is… well, you’ve bore a child Merlin. I know you still bare the marks of your sacrifice.” Arthur said, avoiding eye contact. Merlin felt his heart flutter at Arthur’s ‘I know’.
“As in…” Merlin trailed off, pointing at his skin. Arthur nodded before hesitantly asking,
“Do you want me to show you? I know you’re not used to this, and you’re likely feeling quite overwhelmed, but… you have to believe me when I say that I would never do anything to make you feel uncomfortable.” Arthur’s face was earnest and serious that Merlin couldn’t do anything but nod, feeling touched at his alpha’s (He had an alpha!) consideration. Arthur gave him a happy smile before encouraging him to sit up against the headboard. Arthur reached for the bottom of Merlin’s shirt, looking to check with Merlin, who gave him a nod, before slowly dragging it up. He stopped so the shirt rested on his virtue. Arthur brought up a hand and traced some faint white lines, and a few small purple ones that were scattered about the tops of his thighs, as well as along his inner thigh. Merlin watched in fascination.
“So these are from…?” Merlin hesitantly asked. Arthur nodded his head.
“Yes. These are from carrying Elisa.” Arthur murmured, giving the scars a worshipping look that made Merlin’s heart leap with joy. “You also have them on the bottom of your stomach, but I don’t want to make you feel uncomfortable.” Arthur finished, pulling Merlin’s shirt back down (he wasn’t going to examine the fact that he kind of wanted Arthur to continue pulling the shirt up further, it was probably just his inner omega.) Merlin felt his heart swell for this man, knowing that if this was his future, he would be happy forever. Arthur lowered his gaze after catching the love in Merlin’s, secretly pleased that he put it there. “How about some food? You must be hungry after all that time travelling.” Arthur said, giving Merlin an amused eyebrow. Merlin sputtered in response,
“Yeah well… we know that my magic likes you more than me on most days, so it was probably your fault anyway.” Arthur let out a laugh.
“Oh, never change Merlin.” Arthur responded, giving him a soft look before leaving to ask a servant for food to be brought up.

Chapter Text
Merlin gave a long stretch after waking up from his nap. He couldn’t help himself after eating dinner with Arthur, he had been so tired, that he had nearly fallen face first into his food, had it not been for Arthur’s fast reflexes. He opened his eyes, hearing quiet voices beside him. Arthur was sat up, Elisa sat on his lap while they talked in hushed voices. Elisa noticed he was awake first, her eyes lighting up with joy as she let out a quiet ‘mummy!’. He pulled himself up to sit next to Arthur just in time for her to scrabble over him, settling herself on his lap instead, her tiny hands grasping his sleep tunic.
“Sweetheart, what did we just talk about?” Arthur said worriedly, looking at Merlin. Elisa turned to look at Arthur, her face set in a pout.
“But-but I’m not doing anything! I’m just giving mummy a hug so he can get better, see?” Elisa replied, throwing her arms around Merlin’s middle and squeezing him tight. Arthur gave Merlin a worried look, which melted as he saw the soft amazed look Merlin was giving their daughter.
“It’s-it’s alright.” Merlin said, wrapping his arms around the little girl. He gave Arthur a worried look, and mouthed ‘Is this okay?’. Arthur gave him a fond smile before shuffling closer, giving Merlin’s temple a peck (which obviously set off his bright red blush again) and wrapped his arms and around Merlin, picking up one of Merlin’s hands, and setting both his own and Merlin’s on their daughter’s head.
“You’re doing perfectly.” Arthur whispered. Elisa turned her head to face her parents,
“Do you feel better now?” She asked Merlin.
“I do now that you’ve given the world’s best hug.” Merlin said, smiling, watching as her little face lit up.
“Still remember what we talked about Lizzie?” Arthur said, leaning down to give his daughter a soft look. She nodded seriously,
“Yes daddy. I promise I’ll be really good, and I won’t get mad or upset if mummy forgets something.” She promised sincerely. Arthur smiled at her, ruffling her hair as he said ‘good girl’. Merlin smiled at them both. Not realising how much content omega pheromone he was releasing until Arthur turned to face him, a joyous look on his face as he lent in slightly to smell Merlin’s neck. The omega felt a blush once again grace his face as he murmured a small ‘sorry’. Arthur lent back, whispering to him,
“Never apologise for being happy Merlin.” Before Merlin could respond, Elisa wiggled her way between them, demanding attention in the only way three year olds know.
They spent a few blissful hours on the bed, just basking in each other’s presence. Merlin managed to learn a few of Elisa’s favourite things, her patience being remarkable as she told Merlin everything, despite the fact that he probably would’ve known this off by heart if he was his older self. It was early evening when Merlin began to feel slightly off it, his stomach churning. He ignored it for a while, content to continue playing ‘The Word Game’ with Arthur next to him, and Elisa placed in her mother’s lap again. He ignored it until he felt he would be sick any minute. Face pale, he turned to his daughter and said,
“Sweetheart, would you be able to get off for a minute?” She gave him a pouty look as she slowly slid off his lap. He swung his legs off the side of the bed, taking in deep breaths as tried to get rid of the feeling. He felt a warm hand touch his shoulder.
“Are you alright love?” Arthur murmured, rubbing a soothing hand across his back whilst the other anchored itself round their daughter.
“Yeah yeah, I just- feel sick is all.” Merlin stuttered out, starting to panic as he felt his throat begin to tingle in a way that usually signalled that he was about to be sick. “Oh Gods, I’m-I’m-m’gonna be sick.” He shouted out, slapping a hand over his mouth. He felt Arthur leap off the bed beside him before an empty chamberpot appeared in his lap, just in time as he emptied his stomach into it. He carried on heaving for several minutes, not realising he was crying until he felt Arthur’s fingers on his face, brushing away the tears.
“Shh, shh it’s alright love, that’s it, just breathe okay?” Arthur reassured. Eventually, the heaving tapered off, and Merlin sat there feeling drained. Arthur left briefly to fetch a goblet of water, which Merlin gladly accepted. He sat there quietly for a minute, feeling his breathing returning to normal. Arthur took the chamberpot off him, which made red bloom across Merlin’s face,
“Oh m’sorry, I don’t know what came over me. You don’t have to do that, I'll take it.” Merlin mumbled, starting to stand. Arthur pushed him back down immediately, holding the pot out of reach.
“Nonsense Merlin, you’re my mate. Of course I’m gonna take care of you. You just get back into bed alright?” Arthur responded, watching to make sure he was doing as instructed before moving toward the chamber door.
“M-mummy?” A hesitant voice asked from beside him. He looked down to find Elisa’s face painted in fear.
“I’m alright darling. I’m just a bit sick.” Merlin reassured, holding out his arm so she could cuddle under. Arthur gave him a worried look as he climbed back onto the bed, but before he could ask Merlin more, the omega quickly asked what they would be doing on the morrow, hoping to move past the incident.
They did not forget the incident. As it was, he ended up repeating said incident 4 more times before their evening meal arrived. Arthur was beginning to look frazzled as he once again took away the chamber pot from Merlin. So much so, that he called for Gaius whilst asking Gwen and Lancelot to take Elisa again, Gwen giving Merlin a concerned look from where he was situated in the bed. Once the old physician had arrived at their chambers again, Arthur brought a chair over to Merlin’s bedside so Gaius could rest his feet.
“Arthur tells me you’ve been sick?” Gaius questioned, once again checking Merlin’s temperature. Arthur shouted a ‘Several times!’ over his shoulder, as he poured another goblet of water.
“I don’t know what came over me, my stomach just kept cramping and I just felt so ill.” Merlin replied. A thoughtful look came over Gaius’ face,
“Do you have any other symptoms? Headaches? Tiredness? Soreness?” Gaius asked. Well, Merlin had had a headache since he woke up, but he had assumed that was from his sudden time travel.
“I’ve been tired and had a headache since I woke up, but I thought that was just from the… well, time travel I suppose?” Merlin replied, hesitating from answering about the last symptom. He wasn’t about to tell Gaius his tits were sore thank you very much! However, Gaius never missed a thing. He rose his eyebrow at his ward before asking,
“And any soreness?” Merlin felt himself bloom bright red. Arthur sat next to him on the bed again, placing a hand on his shoulder,
“You know you can tell Gaius anything love, he needs to know if something’s wrong.” Arthur reassured.
“Well it’s not really-I mean I don’t think it’s really important-” Merlin stuttered out, wringing his hands in the bedsheets.
“Merlin, if there’s something wrong we need to know m’boy.” Gaius said, softening his voice as he laid a comforting hand on Merlin’s shoulder. There was a brief silence before Merlin managed to murmur,
“Well the thing is my-uh, my-oh I can’t say it!” Merlin exclaimed, covering his face with his hands. Gaius gave him an exasperated look before saying,
“How about if you whisper it to me before we all pass on due to old age?” Merlin hesitantly agreed before leaning forward and whispering in his ear. When he was finished, Gaius lent back with an incredulous look. “Was that all?!” He exclaimed. Merlin gaped at him.
“Yes! I certainly wasn’t saying it out loud!” Merlin shouted back. Arthur, voice worried, spoke up,
“What? What’s wrong?” Merlin began to protest, shooting Gaius a pleading look. Gaius merely looked at him, unimpressed before announcing,
“He's been experiencing breast soreness Sire.” Merlin shouted a mortified ‘GAIUS!’ while Arthur seemed to sink in relief.
“Oh, was that all?” Arthur asked. Merlin sunk back into his pillows, fearing his face would never calm from its fierce burn. “Honestly Merlin, you get embarrassed so easily.” Arthur said with a fond chuckle. Merlin pouted at him before Gaius cleared his throat.
“It could well be that these are all symptoms from the… time travel. However… these are also all symptoms of pregnancy.” Gaius said, silence following his statement.
“But-I, I haven’t-I’ve never-” Merlin began to protest, wildly looking at Arthur and Gaius, who held up a hand for quiet.
“You may not have, but the Merlin of this time has m’boy.” Merlin brought a hand up to cover his mouth. He couldn’t be! He hasn’t even had sex yet and he’s already pregnant in his future body! Good Gods what was his life!
“Actually, now that I think about it, I don’t remember Merlin ever having his bleeding after his last heat. We were so busy with the last visit from Mercia that it just slipped our minds.” Arthur said, casting a worried look at Merlin. Oh Gods this was really happening!
“We don’t know for sure yet, but it looks likely. Why don’t you get some rest Merlin? We can work on sending you back tomorrow, all right?” Gaius soothed, beginning to leave. Arthur accompanied him out, flagging a passing servant for a cup of warm milk before returning to Merlin, who still looked dazed.
“I’m sorry this is happening to you Merls.” He said, drawing Merlin’s attention. “I know, you’re not quite this time’s Merlin, but you’re still my Merlin. I know this must be overwhelming for you, and I’m so proud of you, for still being you.” Calming alpha pheromones wafted over Merlin, and he felt his eyes watering at Arthur’s heartfelt statement. He threw himself at the alpha, drawing him into a hug as he whispered ‘Thank you’ over and over again.
The next few days seemed to pass in a daze for Merlin. And soon, those days became weeks, Three weeks, to be exact. Three weeks with no further solution to his current time travel problem. He was also sick at certain points in the day but still ended up venturing outside his chambers. He spent his days with his daughter and helping organise the household for an incoming feast. He didn’t dare go with Arthur to council, too afraid he wouldn’t be taken seriously with all his lost knowledge. As days with the same symptoms passed, it seemed to become clear that he had to be with child. A thought which thoroughly terrified Merlin.
As he was getting dressed one day, he realised there was a small bump on his lower stomach. Realising he was now starting to show made it all the much more real. Feeling himself about to cry, Arthur suddenly appeared at the side of him, drawn over by the scent of distraught omega pheromones. Before Arthur could ask, Merlin placed a hand on his stomach, his face crumpling. Arthur’s face melted into understanding, opening his arms wide for the warlock, Merlin threw himself into them, sobs wracking his body. Once he’d calmed down, he felt Arthur tap him on the arm, looking up, he saw a hesitant look on his face, Merlin gave him a smile, which seemed to be all the encouragement he needed, as he said,
“I know this is out of your comfort zone as it is, but… would you allow me to-to feel?” Arthur asked, the first time Merlin had heard him stumble over his words. Merlin felt his heart swell as he smiled and nodded, giving one last wipe to his tear stained cheeks before bringing Arthur’s hand to his bump. Arthur’s breath hitched, a look of wonder overcoming his face, before a grin took its place as he crouched down to look at the small dome.
“Were you this stupefied when I had Elisa?” Merlin said with a chuckle, and after a moment placed a gentle hand on Arthur’s head, wondering how he had got so lucky to be able to have Arthur to himself.
“Oh definitely. I think you found it annoying but secretly loved it at the same time.” Arthur said fondly, giving one last grin to the bump. “I was thinking, maybe we should announce your pregnancy at the feast tonight.” Arthur said, a worried look on his face. Merlin felt his anxiety spike, but forced himself to take deep breaths before responding.
“Okay, let’s do it. Don’t you think we should tell Elisa and our friends first?” Merlin asked, deciding to ignore how worried he now was for the feast.
“Yes of course love, we can tell Elisa over breakfast now, and our friends at lunch if you wish?” Arthur responded, finishing getting changed.
“Sounds great.” Merlin replied, trying to still his shaky breath. Arthur placed a comforting hand on his shoulder, placing a kiss on his cheek before handing over Merlin’s tunic. Merlin had begun not to blush at everything Arthur did now, so excepted the kiss with a smile, instead of a red face. Which promptly changed as he began to take his sleep tunic off before realising Arthur was stood in front of him. He bloomed bright red, and spun around before switching tunics. He heard Arthur let out a chuckle behind him. While he had grown more comfortable being close with Arthur, they hadn’t done anything personal together (as mates usually do) Merlin knowing he perhaps wasn’t ready, and Arthur knowing that it wasn’t quite his Merlin. Arthur didn’t seem to mind stripping in front of Merlin (a fact which Merlin protested heavily) however Merlin was the opposite and couldn’t bare to do it. His embarrassment reaching sky-high levels whenever he thought about it.

Chapter Text
A candlemark saw the small family sat around the table, happily enjoying breakfast. Merlin felt his stomach lurch with each step closer they all were to finishing their meal. Realising after half a minute that it wasn’t just the nerves making him feel ill, he quickly got up as his morning sickness made an appearance, heaving up the half of his breakfast he had eaten. Arthur quickly appeared at his side, rubbing his back and supporting his arms around the chamber pot. Merlin gave him a weak grin as he finished, which Arthur returned with a fond look
“Let’s see if you can keep the other half down alright?” Arthur suggested, leading him back to the table, soothing their daughter’s worried questions. Once Merlin had successfully eaten the other half, with seemingly no sickness appearing, Merlin gave a nod to Arthur, who proceeded to scoop up their daughter and put her on his lap.
“Okay Lizzie, mummy and I have something to tell you.” Arthur began, looking his daughter in the eye. She immediately looked worried, asking,
“Mummy’s not super sick is he?” Turning to look at Merlin with an upset look.
“No no, nothing like that darling,” Arthur soothed, making the girl seem happier again, “it’s just, do you remember what you said to us at the last Winter Solstice?” She seemed to think really hard before lighting up.
“Yeah! I-I wants a sister!” Arthur gave her a fond luck before answering,
“Well, we can’t guarantee that, but we can give you a sibling.” She looked at him strangely for a moment, before the words seemed to sink in.
“I-I’m gonna havs a ‘sibling’?” She repeated, her tongue tripping over the foreign word. Merlin decided he probably shouldn’t leave all this to Arthur, even if he was completely out of his depth.
“Yes Lizzie.” Merlin reiterated, “Mummy has either a little boy, or a little girl in his tummy.” Merlin explained, laying a gentle hand on his lower stomach. Elisa’s eyes grew wide.
“In your tummy!” She gasped, “Mummy! You can’t eat children!” Arthur let out a wheeze before he clamped a hand over his mouth, his eyes glittering in amusement. Merlin tried to keep a straight face, as he took a second to gather his composure, before answering,
“No baby, I haven’t eaten any children.” Elisa looked relieved at that, whilst Arthur let out a snort from behind his hand. “It’s not in that tummy.” Merlin paused as he tried to figure out how he should word it, before deciding maybe it would be easier to show. “Would you like to see?” Arthur looked at him, surprised, whilst Elisa vigorously nodded her head. Merlin headed over to the bed, Elisa looked at Arthur expectantly, until he rolled his eyes and carried her there, much to her joy. Merlin laid himself out, untucking his tunic, whilst Arthur settled next to him, Elisa crawling away so she could sit next to Merlin’s stomach. He pulled his tunic up, and shuffled his trousers down a bit, so the small bump could be displayed. Elisa looked at it strangely, before saying plainly,
“Mummy there’s something in-in there.” Merlin gave her a smile.
“That’s because there is, sweetheart. That’s where the baby is.” Merlin responded, Elisa looked unsure.
“But that’s too small for a baby!” Arthur gave a chuckle behind her as he replied,
“That’s because that baby is still small, darling. Soon it’ll grow, and mummy’s tummy will get bigger as the baby will. Then, when the baby’s ready, they’ll come out.” Elisa’s face began to look understanding, before she looked puzzled once again,
“But where will it come out from?” Silence followed her question. Merlin gave Arthur an unimpressed look, which seemed to scream ‘you set yourself up for that’ whilst Arthur gave a sheepish grin.
“You don’t need to know that baby, would you like to feel?” Merlin asked quickly, hoping to divert the attention, as he placed a hand on the bump. She gave an excited smile as she nodded, her slightly curly hair bouncing. “Alright then, give me your hand sweetheart.” She obediently stuck her hand out, making Merlin laugh.
“Remember to be very gentle, okay?” Arthur reminded from behind her. She gave him a solemn nod, before Merlin guided her hand over to his bump, gently placing her tiny hand on the side of the gentle curve. Her face lit up in wonder.
“There’s-there’s a baby there?” She asked. Arthur laid down next to her, and after giving Merlin a look, placed his hand on top of hers.
“Yes darling, there’s a baby in there. And they’re gonna need you to be their older sister soon.” Arthur said.
“I’m already their older sister!” She exclaimed petulantly. Arthur gave her a grin and ruffled her hair.
“That’s the spirit Lizzie!” He encouraged.
“Are you okay mummy?” Elisa asked, breaking Arthur out of his reverie. He quickly looked at his mate, whose eyes looked teary. Arthur immediately began to draw his hand away from the bump, when Merlin’s hand stopped him. Arthur gave him a confused look, as he placed his hand on top of Arthur's, making a small pile of hands on his stomach.
“Yes I’m fine darling.” Merlin said breathily. “I’m just a bit overwhelmed, but I’m happy, don’t worry.” He said the last part looking at Arthur, who gave him an understanding smile.
“Well, we need to start the day.” Arthur announced, moving his hand away, going back quickly for one last caress against the bump, before sitting up on the bed. “Why don’t you say goodbye to the baby?” Arthur suggested to Elisa. She nodded before climbing round so she was sat on Merlin’s legs. She lent forward and ever so gently placed her hands on either side of the bump before leaning her face close.
“I havs to go now, but-but I’ll be back soon.” She announced, and then lent forwards and gave a tiny kiss to the bump. Merlin felt his heart melt as his eyes began to gather tears again. As he looked over at Arthur, he could see he was in a similar state. The King cleared his throat, before continuing,
“That was very sweet of you darling. You’re going to make a wonderful older sister.” She gave a big grin. Before Arthur got off the bed, he remembered however, to say,
“Oh Elisa, we haven’t told anyone about your sibling yet. Do you think you can keep a secret until tomorrow?” Arthur finished, holding out his pinky. She nodded her head vigorously, lacing her tiny pinky with his. “C’mon, then, let’s get you to Agatha.” Merlin watched as they began to leave, not sure what to do with the myriad of emotions swirling around his head. He loved his family so much, even the little unborn life inside him, and soon (when they figured out how to get him back to his own time) he would have to leave them again, and return to living under the fear of Uther Pendragon, living without Arthur nearby, living without… his daughter. And whilst he knew that on the surface, he probably didn’t really know enough about Elisa to properly take care of her, he knew without a doubt that he loved her fiercely already. Merlin slapped a hand over his mouth, feeling the water works begin to start again. Annoyed with himself for crying, yet again (he was pregnant, so he could probably put it down to hormones if he was honest) he scrubbed his face trying to will them away. As if by magic, Arthur appeared by his side again, gently lifting his hands away from his face. He looked down at him worriedly,
“I’m sorry love, was that too much?” Merlin felt himself begin to cry at that, at the unadulterated care in his voice.
“N-n-no, it wasn’t, it was fine.” He stuttered out in a teary voice. Arthur gave him a doubtful look as he gathered him in his arms. “It’s-it’s just, when Gaius figures out how to send me back… I’ll really miss all this. I l-love you all so much, and I’m gonna have to leave soon.” Merlin choked out, the tears coming even faster. Arthur hushed him, caressing his arms and head with his hands.
“Shh, it’s gonna be alright love.” Arthur soothed. Merlin felt himself let out a sob at the pet name. Arthur started rocking him, releasing calming pheromones again. Merlin gradually felt himself calm, until he was only producing the odd tear and sniffle. “But you won’t lose us when you go. You know that right? I’ll be right there when you get back, granted I’ll be much stupider and oblivious.” He said, producing a laugh out of Merlin, “But it’ll still be me. And you’ll carry our children inside you. You’ll just have to wait to see them.” Merlin realised the truth in his words.
“When did you get so wise?” Merlin huffed out. Arthur let out a laugh, holding him tighter. They sat in a comfortable quiet for a few moments, basking in the other’s presence.
“Can I ask - how did we get together?” Merlin asked, hesitantly.
“Well,” Arthur began before he stopped, as if realising something, he then let out a delighted laugh, mumbling ‘only you Merlin’. Merlin looked at him in concern, urging him to carry on, whilst also questioning his mental stability. “Well Merlin. It started out just as any ordinary day, I was the Prince, and I’d just got changed when you came bursting in through the door-”
“It can’t have been very ordinary if you were up before I got there.” Merlin interrupted, a cheeky grin on his face. Arthur gently swotted his head with a petulant ‘Shut up’.
“Anyway, as I was saying, I’d just got changed, when suddenly, you came running in, immediately latching onto me. Babbling about how you couldn’t take it anymore, and how you loved me so, and how you couldn’t go back to not living by my side after having already done it. I was a bit confused at first I admit, but all I could focus on was the fact you loved me. Me! I had been convinced that you would never look my way considering the fact I was the Prince and your Master.” Arthur gave him a significant look. “Now I realise what it was that caused all that.” Merlin realised it as well. Without this experience, he may never have confessed to his King until he had made it to the throne, and even then, he may never have built up the courage.
“Wow.” Merlin huffed out, causing Arthur to grin. Arthur looked at him cautiously before asking,
“Can I say goodbye to the babe as well?” Merlin gave him a fond smile before nodding. Arthur got in the same position Elisa had, and in the same way, said a quiet farewell, ending with a kiss. “And… can I say the same to you?” Arthur asked. Merlin felt his breath hitch, he closed his eyes a minute to gather himself, before opening them and nodding. Arthur crawled his way up, so that he was eye level with his mate. “I’ll see you at luncheon, alright my love?” He whispered, before slowly leaning down, pressing his lips to Merlin’s. At first, it was just a dry press of lips, as Merlin worked up the courage to reciprocate. And then ever so slowly, Arthur began to deepen the kiss, moving his mouth against his mate’s. Merlin followed Arthur’s lead, having no idea what he was doing, his lack of experience making him clueless. And then, Arthur’s tongue pressed against the seam of his lips, making him jump. Arthur pulled away to chuckle at that. He brought up a hand to caress Merlin’s cheekbone. “You’re so precious, Merlin.” Arthur said fondly. Merlin felt himself blush at how obvious his inexperience was. “Maybe another time then.” Merlin nodded, but before Arthur could heave himself down, grabbed Arthur’s face and placed a peck on his lips. As he lent back, the look Arthur graced Merlin with, could only be described at loving.
Luncheon arrived quickly, bringing with it all their close friends gathered around the Small Hall’s dining table. Before everyone could dig in however, Arthur stood up, bringing everyone’s attention on him.
“Merlin and I have some very important news to share with you all.” Arthur announced, holding out his hand for Merlin to stand with him. Arthur waited until everyone was silent before continuing, “Merlin is with child.” And then the Hall was filled with noise again. Everyone rushed over at once, their beaming faces all talking at once. Morgana and Gwen elbowed their way to the front, grabbing Merlin’s hands as they squealed. The Knights slapped Arthur on the back as they gathered around him.
“Oh Merlin! I’m so happy for you! How far along are you?” Gwen exclaimed. Merlin felt himself falter, Arthur had said the older Merlin had missed his bleeding after his last heat, but he hadn’t mentioned when it was.
“Um, well I think about-uh,” Merlin began to panic, apparently everyone knew about his supposed memory curse, but how bad would it look if he didn’t even know how far along he was? “It was after-uh, oh I can’t–” Gwen and Morgana began to look worried, before understanding overtook Morgana’s face.
“It’s alright Merlin, maybe we can help you.” She said, laying a comforting hand on his shoulder. Gwen looked at them both confused, until Morgana tapped her head significantly. Gwen let out a soft ‘Oh!. Morgana encouraged Merlin to continue,
“Well, I know I didn’t bleed after my last heat but… I don’t know…” Merlin said, trailing off, his predicament obvious.
“Well I could’ve sworn you had your last heat about 3 months ago.” Morgana said, looking to Gwen for confirmation, who after a moment of thought, nodded her head.
“Thank you. Gods I feel so stupid, I just don’t-” Merlin told them, glad they hadn’t thought any less of him.
“Merlin! You are not stupid. What’s happened to you, is not your fault.” Morgana reprimanded. Merlin felt himself tear up at Morgana’s proclamation, he saw both Gwen and Morgana look alarmed as his eyes began to sting, before they could say anything, he wrapped his arms around both of them, drawing them in for a hug.
“Thank you.” He whispered. He felt their arms go around him, missing the concerned look they shared.
“Are you sure you’re alright Merlin?” Gwen asked concernedly. Merlin gave a sniff before nodding,
“Yeah, I’m fine. Don’t worry.” Gwen gave him a dubious look. But before she could comment, the doors opened and Elisa poked her head through, accompanied with a woman he had never seen before. Merlin felt his worry spike. Morgana looked at him with worry, having been hit with worried omega pheromones. “Who’s that? Why does she have Elisa?” Merlin asked worriedly. Morgana’s face seemed to soften, the worry not disappearing completely.
“Merlin, that’s her nursemaid. You picked her before Elisa was born.” Morgana said, placing a hand on his shoulder. He let out a quiet ‘oh’ before Elisa arrived, throwing herself at his legs.
“Mummy!” She exclaimed. Merlin felt himself smile. He picked her up and settled her on his hip, grinning at her before saying,
“Your father and I have just told all your aunts and uncles the good news.” Elisa looked confused for a moment before she smiled,
“The baby?” She asked. Merlin nodded his head, She turned to Gwen and Morgana with a big smile and said,
“Mummy’s having a baby in his other tummy!” Merlin felt himself blush whilst the pair of women gave him a confused look. Gwen raised her eyebrow but before she could comment, a chuckle sounded from behind him. Arthur came to stand next to Merlin, giving his mate an amused look.
“I don’t think that’s quite what mummy meant darling when he said ‘not in that tummy’.” Arthur chuckled, running a fond hand through his daughter’s curly locks. Her face became confused. She opened her mouth but was interrupted by her father, “You don’t need to know darling. All you need to know is where it is when you look at mummy, alright?” She peeked down at Merlin’s lower stomach before nodding, squeaking out an ‘okay!’.
“I take it the first conversation with her was even funnier.” Morgana commented, her lips pressed into an amused smile.
“Oh you don’t even want to know.” Merlin groaned, he jerked his head at Arthur before saying, “He, was absolutely no help at all when I got asked all the awkward questions.” Arthur let out a laugh before pressing a kiss to Merlin’s cheek.
“Sorry love, I couldn’t help myself. It was just too funny seeing you all flustered.” Merlin gave him an unimpressed look, before handing Elisa over. Before he could reprimand him, a small voice spoke up,
“Was I that small when you had me mummy?” Elisa peered at him innocently, her eyes flicking between the bump and Merlin’s face. Gwen let out a quiet ‘awww’.
“Aw, are you already showing?” Gwen asked excitedly.
“Uh-yeah, you can’t really see here, but…” Merlin hesitantly put a hand on the bump so they could see. Morgana and Gwen began to coo, grinning at each other.
“Mummy!” Elisa interrupted, clearly wanting her question answered. Merlin began to panic, not knowing how to answer. Luckily, Arthur came to his rescue, putting his arm around Merlin as he said,
“Yes darling you were. Maybe a bit smaller than that, but yes.” Elisa looked satisfied finally, squirming in Arthur’s hold until he put her down, so she could ask Uncle Percival to carry her round again (much to Percival’s secret joy). Out of the corner of his eye, Merlin saw Morgana frowning at him, obviously wondering at his hesitance. Merlin faintly heard a ‘Are you okay, Merlin?’, but he couldn’t focus on where it was coming from. His head felt like it was underwater, his thoughts spiralling as it dawned on him that he really didn’t belong here. He could pretend, but he could never be Elisa’s mother, or Arthur’s mate. It wasn’t until he was sat down with his face pressed into Arthur’s neck, that he came back to himself. He took a deep breath of the calming alpha pheromones, and listened as his heart rate came back under control.
“Merlin?” He heard his alpha murmur. Merlin cleared his throat before replying croakily,
“Yes?” Arthur drew back, taking his face in his hands.
“How are you feeling?” Merlin took stock of himself, only feeling vaguely tired.
“Okay I suppose. W-what happened?”
“You completely zoned out there. We couldn’t get you to take deep breaths.” Arthur said worriedly. Merlin looked around, noticing how everyone was gone apart from Morgana and a now present Gaius, who were talking quietly in the corner. “What happened Merlin?” Arthur asked quietly.
“I-I.” Merlin took a breath, “There were so many questions I couldn’t answer. And I-I… it just made me realise how much I don’t belong.” Arthur looked at him, a sad look on his face.
“I can’t deny that this isn’t your time, however, that doesn’t make you any less Merlin . You are enough, no matter what time you’re from, okay?” Arthur reassured, placing his hands on Merlin’s cheeks. Merlin wrapped his arms around the alpha, whispering ‘thank you’. “Ah, there’s one more thing.” Arthur continued with a wince. “Morgana knows.” Merlin felt his eyes widen.
“What! How?” Merlin asked incredulously.
“When we were trying to get through to you, Morgana said she tried to reach out with her magic. But when it reached yours, she said it felt younger, it was still you, but younger.” Merlin began to nod in understanding, discreetly reaching his magic out to Morgana, and discovering hers felt older. As soon as they touched, Morgana’s head snapped to him, she exclaimed ‘Merlin!’ before rushing over.
“How are you feeling?” She asked worriedly.
“I’m feeling much better thank you.” Reassured Merlin.
“So… time travelling huh?” Morgana said with a smile. “Just when I thought you’d found your limit.”
“Yeah, was a bit of a shock.” Merlin chuckled.
“You’re telling me! I don’t know what I’d do if I woke up a few years older, with a mate, a daughter and pregnant.” Morgana said, astonished. Merlin laughed uneasily.
“Yeah, I guess it’ll be a bit of a shock when I go back to be honest.” Merlin said, unconsciously setting a hand on his stomach. Morgana gave him a sad, understanding look.
“The Lady Morgana has just told me of a story she heard once from a passing sorceress.” Gaius said, coming to stand beside Morgana.
“Ah yes! She had lived through The Great Purge, and had seen many years before it. She said her friend went to sleep, about when … Queen Ygraine fell pregnant.” Morgana said, casting a sympathetic look at Arthur, who gave her a sad smile. “They had trouble trying to wake her in the morning, however, when they did she started crying and screaming about ‘The Purge’ and how they were all going to be hunted down and killed. It turned out she had spent three months about a year in the future, when The Purge was at it’s peak. It was thanks to her that the sorceress and all their friends moved away to another Kingdom before everything happened. When she had heard the ban had been lifted, she came back to see how Camelot had fared.” The group went quiet after that. Gods, Merlin couldn’t imagine it, having to see The Purge before it had even happened.
“Well… what did she do to go back?” Merlin asked.
“The sorceress said that her friend ended up going in the first place because she had been wondering what life in the future would be like and messing about with her magic before she fell asleep. So when her friend had tried all her magic, and still not been able to get back to her own time, she simply went to bed and reached out for her magic, wishing for it to take her back. And then she woke up in her time.” Morgana responded. Merlin gave her a dubious look. “Don’t shoot the messenger!” She said with a shrug. So all he had to do was… wish? Morgana’s face suddenly took on a devious smile, causing Merlin to stare nervously at her. “Well Merlin, this just begs a very important question doesn’t it?” Merlin looked at her in confusion, not following. “The sorceress said her friend was wondering about the future when she was transported. I wonder… what were you thinking about?” Merlin paused, having a think back, trying to remember if he had had anything pressing on his mind before he went to bed. Merlin choked on his breath as he realised what Morgana was getting at, his cheeks blooming red as he realised he had gone to sleep pining over the Prince (now King). Morgana let out laugh, patting him on the shoulder, only giving Arthur an amused look as he asked what was so funny. Luckily, Merlin was saved as he heard the mid-noon bells begin to toll.
“Well, we had all better be getting ready for the feast. I’ll see you boys tonight.” She gave a brief kiss on the cheek to all the men in the room, (inwardly chuckling when she pressed her lips to Merlin’s burning cheek) before departing with a flourish.

Chapter Text
The feast was overwhelming to say the least. Older Merlin may have been used to them, but younger Merlin? Nope. Everyone wanted to talk to him. Asking about life as the King’s mate, about his ‘curse’, about Elisa. They were entertaining a variety of nobles that night, from all over Camelot. One particularly slimy noble, by the name of Assel, kept coming up to talk to him, the way his gaze raked over Merlin’s body made him feel particularly uncomfortable, leading Merlin to escape from him as soon as possible, so he could find Arthur. When he finally found him, Arthur was just escaping a very handsy looking beta noble, who kept twirling her hair round her finger and licking her lips as if she had found a particularly tasty looking meal.
“Merlin, thank God.” Arthur murmured, leading him away. “I was being tortured by that harpy, she wouldn’t stop touching me.” Arthur grumbled, giving the woman a fake smile as they sped away.
“Seems like we had the same problem then.” Merlin said with a frown, curling his hand around Arthur’s arm possessively. Arthur stopped immediately, his stance changing to that of a protective alpha (it shouldn’t of taken Merlin’s breath away - but it did).
“What! Who?” Arthur growled, wrapping an arm around Merlin’s waist.
“That Assel guy. He keeps coming over and talking to me, touching my arms and looking at me funny.” Merlin grumbled, wanting nothing more than to just cuddle into Arthur’s arms. Merlin felt Arthur’s arms tighten around his waist.
“That bastard.” Arthur growled. Merlin looked at him in shock, Arthur didn’t look abashed in the slightest as he said, “I floored him in a duel years ago, before we were together. He came to Camelot hoping to be a Knight. When he was here… he saw you helping on the sidelines, and made the mistake of asking me if he could ‘take a turn with you’.” Merlin felt himself pale, now recognising the duel in question. All he heard was that Arthur had challenged a noble. When he had questioned the Prince, he had simply said that the guy had offended him, refusing to elaborate. “Of course, I threw my gauntlet at his feet straight away. After I thoroughly disgraced him, he left Camelot. I heard, a year or so later, that he was up to something in the South-West, but nothing ever happened. Make sure you keep away from him, love.” Merlin gave him a serious nod before Arthur was signalled that the main course was ready. “Well, it’s time, are you ready love?”
“Absolutely not, I think I’ll go have a bath instead.” Merlin said petulantly, drawing a chuckle from Arthur. They sat down as the meal was served, and the Hall went quiet as everyone waited for the King to make a customary speech. He began with the usual things, how grateful he was for his guests to travel here, how there’s strength in these relationships, all the stuff Merlin usually wrote when he was tasked with the Prince’s speeches in the past.
“But today, I come bearing fantastic news.” Arthur paused to look at Merlin, holding out his hand for his mate to stand. “Today, I can happily announce, that my mate and consort, is with child again.” The Hall broke out into cheers, nobles raising their glasses in congratulations. Merlin felt himself grin as he took in the now beaming faces in the Hall. People were up and down from the main table, announcing their congratulations. Merlin was talking to Sir Leon about Elisa’s most recent escapade with her Uncle Gwaine and Percival, when Leon’s face suddenly became alarmed, Merlin felt his panic spike, but before he could do anything, hands grabbed him from behind, one coming up to cover mouth, the other coming round with a sharp dagger, pointing, to his horror, at his small bump. He heard Arthur scream his name as the Hall fell silent, waiting with baited breath as Merlin realised he was being dragged back by Assel.
“Oh this really is too good.” The slimy noble sniggered. Merlin felt his hairs stand on end, his heart hammering as the dagger skimmed his stomach. Arthur let out a growl, both at the threat to his mate and child, and the scent of Merlin’s terrified pheromones. “Really Arthur, you do underestimate me too much. I would have thought you would have been after me straight away, when rumours got out about me in the South. But no. You were so confident.”
“What. Are. You doing?” The King growled out. Assel’s face twisted into a snarl,
“It’s because of you, that I lost a trade deal that was going to save my estate! I lost everything because of you! Once they saw how beaten I was, they refused to trade with me. Well, now it’s my turn, my turn to take everything from you .” Assel growled, however before he could push the blade forward, Merlin’s eyes glowed gold, and the dagger disintegrated into glittering sand, falling through Assel’s fingers. The man made a sputtering noise, using the hand to twist Merlin’s face to him, watching as the gold faded from his eyes.
“Why you little-” Assel began to seethe, upon seeing that the Knights were beginning to advance, knowing he had no weapon, he released Merlin before shoving him with all his might into the table in front. Merlin let out a gasp, feeling his bump suffer a harsh wack, before falling next to the table. Arthur was next to him immediately, running his hands over his lithe form. Faintly, he could hear Assel shouting and screaming as the Knights arrested him. Merlin felt himself begin to shake, feeling shock begin to take hold. He tried to tell Arthur he was fine, that he was just in shock, that’s all, when a vicious cramp took hold of his stomach. He cried out, his hand immediately cupping his bump. Arthur’s voice became frantic, pleading with him to say what was wrong. Merlin gulped down air as soon as the cramp began to fade, turning terrified eyes up to his mate.
“The-the baby!” He cried out, curling in on himself as another cramp began to overtake him. Arthur’s face went ashen. Merlin faintly heard him ordering for Gaius and Morgana to be sent up to his chambers before strong arms slid under him, cradling him as he was lifted. Arthur briefly shouted at the Knights containing Assel to make sure they didn’t kill him, before hurrying away, soothing Merlin’s whimpers.
Arthur gently placed his mate on their bed, smoothing his hand through Merlin’s hair as he soothed him through the pain. Arthur gripped his hand tightly, whispering reassurances. Merlin let out a whimper, feeling an odd sensation in his nether regions that he only associated with getting his quarterly bleeding. Steeling himself, he looked down, feeling tears begin to roll down his face at the blood beginning to seep out of his trousers. Arthur followed his gaze, his breath hitching before returning his attention to Merlin.
“It’s-it’s alright sweetheart, Gaius and Morgana are gonna help you, alright? I know how hard this is on you, but you’re being so brave. No matter happens I’ll be so proud of you, okay? I love you so so much darling.” The alpha reassured, taking a deep breath before starting to undo the laces on Merlin’s breeches, sending out even more calming pheromones when he caught sight of blood stained thighs. Merlin placed a shaking hand on his bump, closing his eyes as more tears streamed down his face. The pair were startled when Gaius and Morgana rushed in.
“Hello m’boy.” Gaius said with a sad smile, softly stroking Merlin’s hair, before nodding at Morgana, who came over and sat next to her fellow omega.
“Okay Merlin, I’m just going to reach out to the baby with my magic, okay?” Morgana said, speaking softly, and after receiving a jerky nod from the boy, placed her hands on his stomach. Merlin felt a tingle as Morgana started, a look of concentration on her face. After a dreadful minute, a small smile spread across her face. “They’re okay.” She breathed out, a look of relief on her face, grinning at Merlin, who let out a sob of relief as he was gathered up by his mate, careful not to disturb Morgana’s hands. “There’s just a small tear in the womb, but nothing life threatening, however I’d feel better If I could heal it for you.” Merlin nodded, breathlessly telling her ‘thank you’ as he grasped her wrist. She smiled at him before a sheepish look took over her face, “Generally when healing, it’s best to get as close to the site as possible. You can say no, but it’s common practice for tears like this to be healed with the aid of magic from the outside… as well as in.” Merlin took a moment to understand, before he blushed lightly.
“Oh-uh, okay then. For the baby.” He said, inwardly cringing. She gave him a pat on the shoulder, a sympathetic smile on her face.
“Gaius, do you have anything that can reach the cervix?” Morgana asked, seemingly to switch swiftly to Healer mode.
“I believe so, my Lady.” Gaius murmured, digging through his bag. Handing over a thin rod with a flat circle attached to the end.
“Are you okay with me doing this Merlin?” Morgana asked, her expression serious. Merlin took a deep breath before nodding. “Okay, just relax for me then. Remember, I’m an omega too, so it’s nothing I haven’t seen before.” She said, encouraging him. That startled a watery laugh out of Merlin, causing Morgana to grin before she climbed onto the bed, so she could kneel next to him. She reached between his parted legs with her weird stick and Merlin immediately looked away, not wanting to make awkward eye contact. He stared at his mate instead, who was stroking Merlin’s face softly. Upon seeing his eyes, Arthur smiled at him, lacing his hand with Merlin’s. Merlin drew in a sharp breath as he felt the instrument enter him. Arthur squeezed his hand to distract him, beginning to talk to his mate,
“Maybe when you go back, you could tell me to investigate the rumours of Assel’s reappearance, instead of ignoring them like the idiot I was.” Arthur told him, his eyes downcast. Merlin nudged his mate’s nose with his own.
“Hey, none of that. There was no way you could’ve known that was going to happen.” Merlin reassured. Feeling his breath hitch as the rod finally stopped at some odd place inside of him.
“Alright Merlin, I’m going to send my magic through this now and through the top of your stomach, okay?” Morgana said, placing a gentle hand on his bump. Merlin felt the tingle of Morgana’s magic again, fighting against the instinct to close his legs at the sensation. After about a minute, the feeling stopped, and Morgana announced, “There! All done! The tear is fully healed, and your baby is perfectly healthy.” She then carefully withdrew the rod.
“We’ll make a fine Healer out of you yet my Lady.” Gaius said fondly, who had been overseeing Morgana. The noble woman grinned before turning to Merlin,
"Will you be taking my advice tonight?" Merlin frowned for a moment before realising what she was referring to.
"I guess I'll have to," Merlin sighed, "I need to get back to my own time. Camelot needs her Consort back, Elisa needs her mother back, and I need to get back to my Arthur." Merlin said sadly, sending a longing look at his mate. Arthur gave him a sad look, caressing his cheekbone as he said,
"It's been nice, seeing you act young again." A fond look overcame his face.
"We'll see you again soon m'boy." Gaius said drawing a teary chuckle out of Merlin. Morgana reached over to give Merlin's hand one last squeeze,
"Would you like me to bring Elisa in before you go?" She said. Merlin drew in a deep breath, shaking his head before responding,
"No. If I see her, I don't think I'll be able to go." He placed a trembling hand on his stomach knowing he wouldn't be able to feel it for much longer. Morgana nodded in understanding before joining Gaius.
"Safe travels Merlin." The omega said, before leaving, the old physician giving one last nod before he too left. Merlin felt a pang as he realised he wouldn't be able to feel the mate bond once he returned. He began to feel bereft, knowing how much he was about to loose.
"Don't worry love. Soon, you'll get to do this all again, and it'll be with your Arthur this time." Arthur whispered, carding his hand through Merlin's hair.
"But you are my Arthur." Merlin whispered back. Arthur gave him a sad look, pulling him into an embrace.
"Why don't I send you with a gift home?" Arthur said eventually, pulling away. Merlin looked at him confused.
"Like what?" The omega questioned, beginning to understand when Arthur tilted Merlin's chin up before leaning in. It started out much the same way their first one did. A deep press of lips. But this time, when Arthur tentatively swept his tongue across Merlin's lips, Merlin didn't jump. Instead, he sighed before opening his lips slightly, allowing the alpha's tongue past, gently pressing back with his own. It tapered off after a minute, slowing until small pecks were exchanged, and then, slowing further until their lips were just pressed together. Not kissing. Just pressed there, breathing the same air. They eventually pulled away, laying down until they were opposite each other, just watching. As Merlin felt himself begin to drift off, his magic beginning to tingle and swirl within him, he whispered,
"Bye Arthur." He was just lucid enough to hear a soft,
"Goodbye darling." Before he tipped into unconsciousness, a small smile on his face.
Merlin woke sluggishly, feeling weighed down by sleep. He heard a faint noise as he began to shift, vaguely sounding like his name. Had Elisa sneaked into their chambers again? As he opened his eyes, he took in the oak beams of the physician's spare room. It took him a minute to get his sleep heavy mind to cooperate. He felt himself jolt when he realised. He was in his room! It must've worked, he must be back in his own time! Merlin felt the elation fade, sadness once again overcoming him as he felt the absence of his mate bond. He felt tears well up as he realised his stomach was flat again, his hand moving to cradle a bump that was no longer there. Finally, sound came back to him again. He nearly jumped at the sight before him. There was his Prince, crouched by his bedside, a concerned look on his face. He was younger now, less bulky, his chin sharper. Merlin loved him. He felt himself break into a sob before throwing his arms around the alpha, ignoring Arthur's noise of surprise. He sobbed his tears into the Prince's leather jacket, a relieved sound leaving him as Arthur's arms came up to cradle him.
"Gods Merlin, what's wrong?" Arthur asked, running frantic hands over him. Merlin felt his tears begin to dry, so pulled back, giving him a watery grin.
"I think it's a long story." He chucked, rubbing his eyes.
"I daresay we've got time after the monster of a lay in you just had." Arthur replied, using his prat voice to cover his worry. Merlin felt himself smile, yes, he was home .
“What do you mean I’m nearly four months pregnant?! I would’ve known, this bump can’t have just appeared out of thin air Arthur! What did you do?!” Yelled a fiery omega, having just woken up from a deep sleep, wagging his finger at his mate.
“I didn’t do anything love! It was-” The alpha began, beginning to miss the timidness of his younger mate’s form.
“Uh! Stop trying to distract me by calling me love. What on Earth is going on?!” Merlin shouted in bewilderment. Gaius grinned from where he was stood in the corner with Morgana, their shoulders shaking with silent laughter. Their Merlin was definitely back.
