Chapter 1: Fenton Family Dinner

Chapter Text

Danny sat at the dining table cautiously staring at the meal his mother had decided to cook in celebration. Don't get him wrong Danny loved family dinners. It was a time for all of them to exist together. A rare occurrence with his parents always in the lab, and Jazz busy with her studies. Not that Danny was any better with him always wondering off to the Ops center to star gaze.

However, the food gave off a barely visible green glow where it sat at the table. the eco-contamination making itself known to all who bothered to look. Not that his parents noticed as they ate the glowing concoction. How they were able to do so without the ectoplasm affecting them always confused him. Along with their inability to taste the contamination.

Normally Danny would be joining Jazz in a long-held tradition of culinary sleight of hand. A contest of who could make their food disappear in the most creative way. Extra points if they could get it onto one of their parents' plates without them noticing.

The game started after the first time they tried to eat the ecto-contaminated food. A mistake neither had dared to repeat as it had left them sick for days.

However, this time Danny couldn’t drag his eyes away from the meal. The dinner gave off an enticing sweet smell. Not unlike a key lime pie. A meat and potato key lime pie that glowed.

In a bout of morbid curiosity Danny lifted his fork to his mouth. Would he even get sick now that he was a ghost? Ectoplasm was infused into his entire being at this point. At least he assumed so. How else would he be able to fly, turn invisible, and phase through walls even in human form.

Surly it would be fine, and if it wasn’t then a few miserable days was a small price to pay. It was for science after all. How else would he find out the limits of his body without experimenting? His parents would be so proud.

As Danny bit down on the ‘food’ a citrus tang spread through his mouth. The flavor mixing unusually with the ham. Not a bad unusual. More of a ‘what possessed you to put those flavors together’ unusual.

With one last chew he swallowed the concoction. His chest humming strangely as if pleased with the meal. Danny's joy did not last long as a sharp pain radiating from his shin caused him to glare at his sister.

Jazz was looking at him in horror while furiously gesturing. Making no attempt to even be subtle. Not that their parents noticed too caught up in their discussion about the now working portal. A portal Danny still had a healthy cation of. It did kill him after all. Well half killed him.

Danny watched her increasingly panicked hand signs as he oh so slowly brought up another fork of ectoplasmic food masquerading as a human dinner. A shit eating grin cutting across his face. With a deceive chomp Danny swallowed more of the citrusy goodness. Tongue flicking out to lick the utensil.

With a dramatic bang Jazz face planted the table groaning in pain. Their parents pausing to look over in concern. Danny happily continuing his meal feeling accomplished as a little brother. A role he had been neglecting for the past month or so. Yep, today was a good day.
