Work Text:
He can’t be serious Sam thinks while looking into the eyes of his best friend as he’s just told him he’s joining a group named Thunderbolts? Damn it, Bucky. They’re standing in Sam’s apartment in DC, but also the amount of times Bucky has just slept here should also grant the apartment the title of theirs.
“I really don’t understand this. How you went from ‘Just call me when you have a lead and I’ll be there’ and all that apparent crap you told me to whatever this-.”
“Sam, I don’t have time for this, I need to go.”
“Please, just fucking let me talk.” There was desperation in his own voice as he held Bucky’s stare, Sam knew that. He also didn’t care.
“Okay.” Tone softer than anything he’d said in this entire conversation.
“You need to stay.” he heard Bucky sigh. “Stay with me and we can work this out together. Whatever this is, whatever they’re blackmailing you for. That’s what friends are for right?” Sam said, honesty flowing through those words. He meant every single one of them. Bucky needed to stay .
“I need to leave.” Bucky was already not meeting his eyes when he said this. He turned around to grab the door knob when Sam had just about enough of this nonsense.
He knew he was playing dirty by screaming the next words that came out of his mouth, but he had to at least try. “Okay just leave! Leave and never come back! Leave! I know you don’t care about me anyways!”
In a blink of an eye Bucky was standing face to face with Sam. Damn super speed . And oh he was furious . Tears threatening to fall off those intense blue eyes as his stare bore Sam’s soul. As if he was offended Sam would even entertain the thoughts of what he just said out loud. More like screamed, but whatever.
Sam was waiting for whatever words were going to come out of Bucky’s mouth, when Bucky’s eyes just stared down at Sam’s lips and he crushed their mouths together in a searing kiss. Sam moaned, not surprised by the kiss, as he knew it was happening the second Bucky’s eyes dropped, but just by the force of the kiss.
Bucky’s hands found Sam’s waist and they fumbled trying to grip and massage every part of Sam’s body. Sam slid his hands over Bucky‘s shoulders. Both of them opened their mouths at the same time, tongues tasting new intense and delicious flavors, when Sam gripped his shoulders with more strength and pushed Bucky away from his face. Bucky’s grip still firm on his waist.
Bucky had an annoyed and questioning face when Sam spoke. “No, absolutely no! You do not get to make the first move when you’re about to leave. Not when I’ve been in love with you for the past year. Not when you are joining a-“ Sam’s voice wobbled but was cut by a dumbfounded Bucky.
“You in love with me?”
Sam looked at Bucky with please you gotta be kidding me look.
“You love me.” Bucky repeated to himself as if all the puzzle pieces had automatically come together to form the most beautiful picture ever. The start of a smile began to appear in Bucky’s face as Sam turned in his arms so he wasn’t facing Bucky and crossed his arms in front of him, pouting at nothing. Bucky tightened his grip on Sam and forced him to rest his back against him. Bucky’s head resting on Sam’s left shoulder as his head buried in Sam’s neck to breathe him in.
“This isn’t how I wanted to tell you but yeah, asshole, you kinda have my heart.” Sam sighed, almost defeated when he added. “And now you’re breaking it.”
“Sam, I’ve been in love with you since you refused to move your seat up back in Germany.” Sam gasped, but didn’t say anything so Bucky continued. “At first I was like ‘who is this guy and why the hell is he not afraid to piss off a highly trained assassin?’ and then I was like ‘holy shit, I’m gonna protect this man with my life.’” Sam kept his stance so Bucky asked, “Please, Sammy, turn around.”
Sam turned in Bucky’s arms and when his deep honey gold eyes locked with the blue ocean that were Bucky’s eyes, all at once, his resolve melted, he grabbed Bucky by the neck and pulled him in to crush their lips together once again. Sam was so unbelievably happy and he could tell Bucky was too with the way he was holding onto Sam.
Bucky broke the kiss to whisper “Sweetheart” as if the love he was feeling was too painful but at the same time too good. Bucky then proceeds to leave little kisses all over Sam’s face, making him giggle.
Their little bubble burst when the ringtone of Bucky's cellphone erupted. The look on Bucky’s face was everything Sam needed to know about who the caller might be. The look, well, it was one of regret and anger.
Sam’s eyes stared at nothing. “You’re still leaving.” It wasn’t a question. Sam already knew what was going to happen so he started disentangling himself from Bucky as Bucky was trying to keep him there. Sam made it out of Bucky’s embrace as Bucky answered the call.
“Yeah, I know.” Bucky responded to the call, but seemed to be about to start an argument. And Sam knows him very well because that’s exactly what Bucky does. “We are staying one more day, I don’t care- … -No I know the consequences I made the fucking plan! We are staying one more day. End of discussion!” Bucky hangs up and looks at Sam with so much adoration and sadness in his eyes that Sam has to turn away and walk to his bedroom. Bucky follows him without saying a word. They go through their respective night routines, Bucky a little unsure with what was okay, but still there. They brush their teeth, change into pajamas and Sam gets under the covers with Bucky following suit. They don’t exchange thoughts throughout the whole ordeal.
It isn’t until they’re both facing each other in bed when Sam breaks the silence.
“Okay… I trust you, Buck. You really are breaking my heart here, but I know yours is breaking just as much.” Sam says, defeated.
“I love you.” Is all Bucky can say, because he does. He loves his Sammy with his whole entire being. And that’s just it, that’s the reason he has to deal with what’s starting tomorrow. They just have to wait a little longer but they will be in each other’s arms again. That’s just the truth.
Their lips, like magnets, touch again and this time they don’t stop. If Sam has to call to apologize to his neighbors tomorrow for the noises they make, well that’s just tomorrow. Tonight is theirs. This apartment is theirs. The bed, theirs. This love, theirs.
————
They spend the whole next day cooped up in the apartment together. They share laughs, tears, a little bit of banter, because that’s who they are, and share confessions of love over and over again. And when it’s time for Bucky to leave, Sam makes him promise to be careful. Bucky swears he will make sure Sam’s always safe out there. But most importantly, they promise they will always love each other. No matter what happens out there, that’s a promise they both will keep.
