Work Text:
Mike sat next to Will on the edge of his bed.
“Have you ever heard that old um, adage about birthmarks?”
“No, but i have a feeling you’re about to tell me,” Will jeered.
“They say birthmarks appear in the places you were kissed most in your past life.”
Will’s face soured, then softened.
“That’s sweet,” he smiled.
“Your lover must’ve—“ Mike stopped himself.
Will fell into a fit of laughter, flopping back onto the bed.
“No, don’t stop! tell me what my lover must’ve done,” he challenged.
Mike bit his lip, half smiling at the boy next to him.
Will felt like royalty under mike’s gaze. He sat up to level with him.
“They must’ve really liked kissing the corner of your mouth, right…” he reached to touch Will— “There.”
Will lifted his hand at Mike’s touch. He felt his birthmark. Under his left nostril, near the corner of his lip.
He’d stopped laughing. He was in disbelief.
He touched me. Is he…?
“You think so?”
“Well, I’d—“ the dark haired boy stopped himself again.
Will felt his pulse in his throat.
Am I brave enough to challenge that pause?
Am I stupid enough?
“You’d what?”
I guess I am.
Only love makes you this stupid.
Mike cleared his throat.
“I’d… I mean,” Mike’s cheeks flushed, he giggled nervously.
“What would you do, Mike?”
Unsure of where this newfound bravery had come from, Will slid closer to Mike on the edge of the bed.
Mike folded and then unfolded his hands. He pursed and then unpursed his lips.
“I’d really like it too,” he sighed.
Will swallowed his fear.
“Like what, mike?” he marveled.
“Kissing you, I mean. I’d like kissing you too, if I was your lover,” Mike stammered.
Will let himself enjoy this. He allowed himself to smile at the dark haired boy morphing into a nervous trainwreck right beside him.
“If you were my lover?”
Mike swallowed hard and cautiously turned his head toward Will, meeting his eyes.
“Yeah, if, I guess,” he muttered.
Will fixed his gaze on mike.
“We could pretend, if you want.”
Will’s bravery had been demolished. chased away, even, and replaced with desperation.
Anything you like, mike.
Anything you want.
Only love makes you this stupid.
“Pretend what?”
“Like you’re my lover,” Will divulged.
He didn’t even know what he was saying anymore. He could hardly breathe.
He locked his fingers with Mike’s.
“Yeah, we can pretend,” Mike whispered.
Years of playing DnD worked as a buffer for this game of pretend.
“Do you want to kiss me, lover?”
Will was incredibly experienced in role playing.
“I’d love nothing more.”
In fact, so was Mike.
