Work Text:
His parents said Rufus will be fine… but their words don’t soothe Jack’s nerves. Trembling, he kneels beside his dog, watching Rufus writhe and whimper before the fireplace; the poor thing must be in so much pain. Tears in his eyes, Jack sniffs, and he leans down to press his face against Rufus’ neck, hiding the tears and muffling his sobs against his dog’s soft fur.
“Please… don’t d-die, boy,” Jack whispers, fingers shaking as he pets Rufus.
The dog is more than a pet to Jack… Rufus is his best friend. His only friend.
And Jack can’t lose him.
