Work Text:
Kaeya was slumped over the bar counter in the Angel’s Share, and Diluc was less than happy. This was the fourth time this week that Kaeya drank until he passed out, drool and all. Diluc was wiping down the different drink glasses as he listened to his brother quietly snore and mumble in his sleep. He was trying his best to stay calm, he knows how hard Jean is pushing him these days, but seeing Kaeya drool all over his counter is more than irritating. It was a loud snore and Kaeya’s drool bubbled with a single breath before he had enough.
“Kaeya!” Diluc shouted while aggressively shaking him. Kaeya shot up with a quick inhale.
“What!” He yelled back, barely keeping his eyes open. He swayed back and forth on the bar stool.
“Go home. You’re drooling on my counter.” Diluc gestured to the small puddle that was near where Kaeya had his head moments before. Kaeya stared at it for a second before putting his hand out to Diluc. He handed Kaeya a cloth to wipe down the counter. This was more of a routine than anything, Kaeya wiped up the mess and handed the cloth back before stretching and finally standing up.
“Goodnight Diluc.” Kaeya half-heartedly waved as he pushed the tavern door open. Diluc sighed before tossing the used cloth in a pile of laundry behind the counter.
“Night, Kaeya. Get home safe.” He mumbled, he knew Kaeya didn’t hear as he watched the door close behind the blue-haired man.
Kaeya walked slowly and stumbled often. He wasn’t fully paying attention to where he was going and then he was suddenly back at the headquarters. Kaeya laughed to himself before walking in. He headed up the stairs and walked towards his office door. When a light in another room caught his eye.
“Who could that be? Jean?” He muttered to himself as he walked towards the open door. It was Albedo, he was humming to himself as he read through pages of god knows what. Kaeya leaned on the door frame, curious to see how long he could stand there before the Chief Alchemist noticed him.
A couple of minutes had passed, it's not like Kaeya was trying to hide, he was standing in the doorway and he wasn’t being super quiet or anything.
“I could probably stand here for hours before you'd take your nose out of that paperwork.” Kaeya chuckled, Albedo looked up at the man calmly and set the paper on his desk. He crossed his arms and leaned back in his chair.
“Captain. How can I help you? What are you doing here so late?” Albedo had his usual monotone voice and relaxed nature. Kaeya invited himself in and sat in one of the chairs in front of Albedo’s desk.
“I was just dropping by, I guess I accidentally walked here without noticing, you?” Kaeya leaned forward with his elbows on his knees and his head rested atop his hands. Albedo could smell the alcohol, and he sighed while stacking the papers on his desk.
“I had some extra work and lost track of time. I think you should head home. I can smell the wine on you.” He leaned forward, almost replicating Kaeya’s position. Kaeya leaned back in his chair and sighed.
“I know, but I’m here now and I don’t want to walk home from here. I’ll just sleep on the couch in my office.” He chuckled to himself, “Wouldn’t be the first time.” Kaeya had a bit of a somber tone. Albedo took a minute to think to himself.
“What if I walked with you? To your house I mean.” He offered to the Cavalry Captain. Kaeya was startled by the offer. Albedo is a nice person, but he usually doesn’t go out of his way to do something small like this for someone.
“You would?” The words practically fell out of his mouth, he leaned a bit forward and his hands made their way onto the alchemist’s desk. Albedo put the papers into a nice pile and then into a folder. He stood up and walked over to Kaeya.
“Yes, now let's go. Sleeping on the couch in your workplace is beyond sad. Even for you.” He sighed as he held out his hand. The Captain grabbed it with as much elegance as he could and stumbled to his feet. Albedo swung Kaeya’s arm over his shoulders and helped the man stand up, Kaeya swayed and Albedo forced him to lean his weight on him.
“You are stronger than you look.” Kaeya had his usual flirty tone, Albedo rolled his eyes as they began walking toward the entrance of the building. They didn’t move very fast, but neither of them was in a hurry.
They made it to the front door of Kaeya’s house and Albedo helped him unlock it, he watched as the tall man walked inside. Albedo was about to head back when he heard something, he wasn’t sure what it was so he looked back only to see Kaeya still in his open doorway, staring at him.
“Did you say something?” Albedo questioned, turning fully around to face the Cavalry Captain. Kaeya stared for a second, almost like he was trying to collect his thoughts.
“Yeah, I, well.” He let out an exasperated sigh. “Do you want to come in? I’m sure you need a break from paperwork. I can make tea.” He finally got out, still slightly slurring his words. Albedo put his hand on his chin and was visibly thinking, which made Kaeya nervous, why did it make him nervous? It’s not like it matters if he says no, but Kaeya feels like he should pay Albedo back for walking him home. That’s all it is. Right?
“Sure, I’ll have some tea.” Albedo smiled and Kaeya moved out of the way to let him in. Kaeya was also smiling, but he was smiling like an idiot.
“Don’t mind the mess. It won’t take long to get the tea made, but feel free to make yourself at home.” Kaeya rambled as he walked into the kitchen.
Albedo wandered a bit in his living room, looking at all the pictures that were around. Kaeya didn’t seem like the type to Albedo to have so many old family pictures hung on the wall, and yet there they were. He studied the different pictures when he came across one that was of Kaeya and Diluc at the Dawn Winery when they were younger. Albedo stared at it for much longer than he meant to. He mostly was staring at the innocent smile that was painted across Kaeya’s face. Where did that smile go?
Albedo took a seat at the table and waited for Kaeya to finish the tea. Kaeya joined him not long after, he sat the cups down along with a plate of biscuits to go with the tea. Albedo sipped on the hot tea and enjoyed the crumbly biscuits. They sat in silence for an awkward amount of time before Kaeya finally spoke.
“I don’t think we’ve ever hung out like this.” He shrugged while looking into his cup of tea. Albedo glanced up at the man and thought for a second.
“I suppose you are right. I personally don’t think we have any common interests and that may be the reason.” Albedo continued to watch Kaeya as he lightly stirred his tea. Kaeya shrugged once more and finally looked up at Albedo.
“I don’t know about that. You’re interested in history and research right? I’m enthralled with the history of Khaenri’ah.” Kaeya stared at the diamond-shaped mark on Albedo’s neck and wore a smirk. Albedo shifted in his seat as he finished his tea.
“Khaenri’ah you say? A rather interesting thing to catch the eye of a Calvary Captain.” Albedo replied in an almost sarcastic tone. Kaeya’s smirk faded rather quickly as he stared into his cup once more.
“I guess.” He muttered, drinking the last of his tea. The two sat in uncomfortable silence once more for a few moments. Albedo ate the last of his biscuit and sighed.
“I have more paperwork back at headquarters. Thank you for the tea and biscuits, they were good.” Albedo stood up from the table and pushed in his chair. Kaeya stood up with him and gave him an awkward smile.
“Let me clean this up and I’ll walk to the door.” Kaeya scrambled to pick up the cups and plates. Albedo nodded and walked back over to the wall full of pictures. His eyes went back to the picture of the brothers when they were younger. He looked a little harder and noticed the diamond shape in Kaeya’s eye. Albedo instinctively touched the mark on his neck.
“Khaenri’ah.” Albedo mumbled to himself. He began looking at all the pictures with Kaeya in them and saw the same shape in Kaeya’s eye as the one before it. He heard footsteps behind him and turned around quickly and stared into Kaeya’s eyes. There it was, the diamond shape. The same shape that was on his neck. His breath hitched as Kaeya began to speak.
“Are you okay? You look like someone killed your dog.” Kaeya chuckled, “I can walk you back to headquarters if you want me to?” Kaeya reached his hand out slightly, Albedo almost grabbed it, but then shook his head slightly.
“No, I’m fine. If you did it would defeat the purpose of me walking you home.” Albedo smiled slightly and headed for the door. Kaeya shrugged it off and trailed after him. Kaeya opened his door for Albedo and smiled.
“Goodnight Albedo, I’ll see you tomorrow.” Kaeya waved as Albedo walked down the stairs and stood by the street.
“Goodnight Captain. Sleep well.” The alchemist returned the wave and headed back to the knights' headquarters. Kaeya watched him walk for a bit before retreating back into his home. The Calvary Captain walked over to the wall of pictures and stared at them for a bit and sighed.
“I better get some sleep.” He muttered before walking towards his bedroom.
The next morning Kaeya woke up with a splitting headache and he was very dehydrated. He sat up and sighed. Kaeya pushed himself to his feet and headed to his kitchen. He noticed the cups and plates in the sink, he stared at them and tried to remember why there were dirty dishes. He remembered going to The Angel’s Share after work and he remembers dozing off, but that's about it. He shrugged it off and poured himself a cup of water and watched out the window in front of the sink. Kaeya glanced at the clock and nearly spat out his drink. It was just passed noon. He was beyond late for work.
He ran to his room and scrambled to get ready, then ran out his front door and locked it behind him. He didn’t live far from the headquarters, but right now it felt like miles away. Kaeya swung the headquarters doors open and sped to his office.
He opened his office door and found Jean waiting inside. Kaeya hung his head in defeat and stood next to the acting Grandmaster.
“Jean, I’m so sorry.” He avoided eye contact as she turned to face him, to his surprise she smiled and patted his shoulder.
“No worries Kaeya. Albedo filled me in. He said you came by late last night to work on some extra paperwork.” She had a genuine smile. “I was just here to pick it up.” She glanced down at the paperwork in her hands.
Kaeya tried to hide his confusion, “Albedo?” Jean nodded and walked out. Kaeya stared at his door as Jean slowly closed it behind herself. Kaeya walked over to his desk and sat down. He was lost in his thoughts trying to figure out what she meant when he heard a knock on his door, without thinking he invited whoever it was in. Kaeya looked up and saw it was Albedo.
“Oh, Albedo. What can I do for you?” He shifted a few things on his desk as Albedo walked up and stood in front of the Captain’s desk. The alchemist stared at Kaeya in silence for a beat too long and Kaeya glanced away.
“I came to ask if you are okay.” Albedo finally spoke, and the question made Kaeya even more confused. Since when did Albedo care about him? “You were pretty drunk last night and I was curious if you had a bad hangover.”
Kaeya stared at Albedo trying to rack his brain on why the Chief Alchemist knew that he was drunk last night. “I’ve had worse. Did I do anything weird to you last night?” He cringed while asking the question, Albedo simply shook his head. Kaeya let out a sigh of relief. “Thanks for covering for me. It really helped me out.” Kaeya smiled at the shorter man.
“Consider it payment for the tea last night.” Albedo handed Kaeya some paperwork. “Jean said that you and I will be spending a week in Dragonspine on a mission.” Kaeya glanced at the papers and sighed.
“What will we be doing?” The Cavalry Captain flipped through the pages, before continuing. “And what tea are you talking about?” Kaeya looked back up at the alchemist.
Albedo took a seat before answering, “Jean was planning on sending me up there alone as usual, but thought that you could use a break and decided you should come along this time. We’ll just be up there to check on things and clear out any hilichurl camps.” Albedo pointed at one of the paragraphs on the paperwork. “Last night you stumbled here on accident and I walked you home and you made us tea. I wanted to pay you back for it.” Kaeya smiled before looking back at the papers.
“I see. Thank you for walking me home, and I’m sorry for any trouble I may have caused.” Kaeya sighed and placed the papers on his desk. “When are we leaving for Dragonspine?”
“I was hoping we could leave tonight, but if you’d prefer to leave in the morning that’ll be fine as well.” Albedo had his arms crossed and he leaned back in the chair. Kaeya remembered talking to the alchemist last night all of a sudden.
Kaeya smiled, “Tonight works, as long as you wouldn’t mind waiting for me to get packed.” Albedo nodded and then stood up.
“We can meet by the gate around seven then.” He began walking towards the door. Kaeya agreed and watched the alchemist leave, then sighed.
“Why did I talk to him last night?” He mumbled before glancing over the paperwork once more.
The rest of the day went by ever so slowly, Jean had Kaeya on patrol around the city itself. He went around and helped anyone who needed it.
“Oh thank you Captain Kaeya, I’m so glad you were able to find Nelson! I was getting so worried.” Margaret thanked Kaeya and wouldn’t stop shaking his hand.
He peeled his hand away, “I’m glad I could be of help, here is the rest of the cat food.” Kaeya handed the small bag over to the bar owner and walked off, heading in the direction of The Good Hunter since it was time for his lunch.
“How are you this fine afternoon Sara?” Kaeya greeted the woman. She wore her usual friendly smile as she turned to face the Captain.
“Sir Kaeya. I’m doing good, what can I get for you? It’s a bit late for lunch, chicken-mushroom skewers per usual?” She began to gather the materials to begin cooking, but before Kaeya could answer and a small figure stood next to him.
“Albedo, nice to see you again. Here for lunch?” Kaeya smiled at the alchemist.
“I am, mind if I pay for yours?” Albedo handed over some mora, “a sunshine sprat please.” Sara nodded and began cooking the chicken-mushroom skewers along with the sunshine sprat. Albedo gestured for Kaeya to follow him to a table.
“Thank you for buying me lunch, you really didn’t need to.” Kaeya smiled again as he took his seat. Albedo returned the smile and sat across for him, “Why did you buy me lunch? Could I consider this a date?” Kaeya teased the alchemist.
Albedo chuckled, which took Kaeya by surprise, “If that is what you wish, Captain.” Kaeya blinked in confusion, was Albedo flirting with him? He awkwardly cleared his throat.
“No, our first date would have to be much fancier than this.” Kaeya hid his sudden nervousness with his usual flirty tone, the alchemist rolled his eyes and smiled. The two sat in silence only for a few moments before Sara walked over with their lunch.
“I hope you enjoy gentleman.” She smiled and then walked back to her counter.
The two men ate in silence for a bit, Kaeya kept staring at Albedo as he ate, still confused as to why Albedo paid for his lunch. Albedo finally looked up and made eye contact with the Captain.
“Why did you join me for lunch? I would imagine you would’ve eaten by now.” Kaeya chuckled, “It’s already four.” Albedo sat his fork down on his empty plate and sighed.
“It’s as you said last night, we haven’t spent much time together, and seeing how we will be on a trip together for a week we should get used to each other’s presence.” The alchemist smiled, Kaeya returned the smile and looked down at his plate.
“I see, I don’t really remember saying that, but I’ll take your word for it.” Kaeya mumbled, “Thank you for buying lunch. I have to get back on patrol though, I’ll see you later, Albedo.” The way Kaeya said his name made Albedo feel different, he hid his face behind his hand and then cleared his throat.
“Right, I have some paperwork as well. I’ll meet you this evening as planned.” Albedo stood up and then headed to the knights' headquarters. Kaeya watched him go and waved, once again smiling like an idiot.
The last hour went by pretty quickly, seeing how Jean had moved his post back at the headquarters as per usual for a knight's last hour on shift. Kaeya just had to fill out a report of what he had done and when he had done it in the five hours he worked, including his breaks. The Captain took a bit longer than usual to fill out his paperwork since he kept getting lost in thought when he had to write about his lunch break. Once he finished he headed to Jean's office to hand it in before going home, weirdly she wasn’t there so he had sat it in a tray on her desk and left.
He got home as fast as he could, still had about an hour before he had to meet with Albedo. Once he finished packing he was down to 30 minutes and he had a pit stop before heading to the meeting spot, so he ran to The Angel’s Share. He slammed the door open and greeted his grumpy brother behind the counter. Diluc’s soft smile faded almost immediately when he made eye contact with Kaeya.
“Diluc!” Kaeya gave him a wide, almost teasing smile.
“Kaeya. Thought you were to meet Albedo,” Diluc turns to the clock then back to the Captain, “15 minutes from now?”
“Who told you-” Kaeya shook his head, “Ah never mind. Could I get one bottle of your finest Dandelion wine?” The Cavalry Captain tossed some mora on the bar counter and Diluc scoffs as he grabs a bottle off the shelf behind him. Kaeya grabs and inspects it before smiling and giving his brother a wave as he walks out the door.
“Be safe, Kaeya.” Diluc whispers, earning a chuckle from Charles.
Kaeya half-jogged towards the front gate of Mondstadt and he prayed he wasn’t too late. Albedo waved him over and Kaeya caught his breath.
“Am I late?” Kaeya breathless asked, He adjusted his bag strap as they greeted each other. Albedo had a soft smile on his face as he shook his head.
“No, you are right on time. Shall we set off? It should take us about 12 hours, give or take before we arrive at my camp in Dragonspine.” Albedo pointed in the direction they needed to go and sighed at the thought of the long walk. Kaeya returned the sigh upon hearing how long the walk would be.
“Yeah, I suppose we should begin our journey.” The Captain giggled before walking ahead. Albedo smiled as he followed suit.
They had walked in silence for an hour or two, maybe commenting on the scenery, until they were about two hours into their walk and on the path that overlooked Windrise and the statue. Albedo stopped to admire the area.
“It is pretty at night.” Kaeya sat on a rock on the side of the road. Albedo stared at The Cavalry Captain and then back to the giant tree out in the field below.
“I’d like to paint the scene soon, maybe when it's dusk though.” The Chief Alchemist took a seat next to Kaeya, he had to scoot over a bit and their legs grazed against each other. Why did Kaeya notice it so much?
“Maybe on our way home? We could plan it out so when we leave we could stop here, around dusk, so you could paint it. Sound good?” Kaeya turned his head only to be practically nose-to-nose with Albedo, who looked dumbfounded at his offer. “What is it?” He uncharacteristically stuttered. Albedo smiled and looked towards the field once more before standing up.
“I like that idea. Let’s continue, we’ll make camp a bit further down the path.” Albedo held out his hand for Kaeya, he grabbed it faster than he probably should’ve and held it for longer than he should've.
They continued for a couple more hours and they made it to the path that is in a canyon, they decided to make camp near a small pond that was nearby.
“Let's stop here for the night and continue in the morning.” Albedo began to lay out his supplies and set up his tent. Kaeya was staring up at the stars, mesmerized by them. The alchemist glanced over to the Captain and smiled softly. “Something catch your eye?”
Kaeya turned his head slightly to face Albedo and sighed, “No. Sorry.” He began setting up his own tent and getting ready for bed. “I’m just gonna head in for the night, I’ll see you in the morning.” The Cavalry Captain disappeared into his tent and shuffled around until eventually went silent.
Albedo started a fire to roast one of the fish he had caught after Kaeya went to bed. It was probably midnight if he were to guess. The alchemist’s gaze kept returning to Kaeya’s tent.
“He seemed stressed.” he mumbled to himself before looking towards the sky. It was when he saw Celestia that he guessed might’ve been the reason. Albedo finished his fish and packed the extra up and decided to turn in for the night.
“You are our last hope.” Those words echoed through Kaeya's head, repeating until he shot awake. The Captain was exhausted. The sun was bright as it peered through the windows of his tent. He shoved himself out of his sleeping bag and slowly walked out of the cramped space.
“Good morning Captain. Sleep well?” The blonde appeared out of nowhere and handed Kaeya a cup of coffee. He was startled but grabbed the coffee anyway.
“Yeah. Morning, Albedo.” Kaeya's voice was rough due to him just waking up, he caught Albedo staring and gave him a confused look, which caused Albedo to clear his throat and smile before continuing to pack up his supplies. Kaeya sat on the log near his tent to take in the morning for a little longer before packing. His eyes traveled up to the sky and they landed on Celestia. He lost his appetite.
“We should arrive at my camp around noon.” Albedo began walking and Kaeya followed behind. Albedo glanced behind him and saw Kaeya watching the ground as he walked.
Albedo stopped and turned around to face the Captain, “Are you okay? You seem out of it.” Kaeya looked up and stared at the alchemist. The Captain flashed his usual smirk,
“Oh? Are you worried about me?” Kaeya bent down slightly to be even with Albedo’s height. His face was a bit too close. He saw Albedo’s face flush a light shade of pink, he felt his warm up as well, and then he backed up. “I’m fine. Thank you though, shall we?” Kaeya gestured and Albedo nodded before continuing on.
They walked and walked, only making small talk here and there until they reached the camp that was just on the border of Dragonspine. Albedo greeted Iris and then introduced Kaeya.
“We’ll be up there for a week. We’ll come back down next Friday.” Albedo talked in his usual monotone voice, Kaeya found it comforting. Wait. What does he mean by that?
“Okay, I’ll make sure to keep watch for you guys then. Everything has been usual up on the mountain, though hililchurls have been quite active recently.” Iris was writing something down on a clipboard as she spoke. Albedo nodded and also wrote the information in his notebook.
“Do you come to the mountain often, Captain?” Iris smiled at Kaeya who was very zoned out.
“Just Kaeya is fine, and no. This is the first time I've been in a while.” Kaeya stared up at the large mountain and shifted his weight to his other foot. “I’m excited though. It’s been a while since I've done an expedition.” Iris simply smiled once more and returned her attention to Albedo.
“Are you ready?” Albedo turned to face Kaeya and the Captain nodded as he finally pulled his gaze from the mountain to look at the shorter man.
“Yeah, let's go.” Kaeya followed the alchemist as he once again took the lead, heading toward the broken bridge.
The duo stopped just before the bridge that was in pieces, Kaeya looked towards Albedo as he knelt down. The alchemist summoned one of his geo flowers then held out his hand to the Captain, who grabbed it faster than he meant to, and they were lifted into the air.
“I meant to ask if you were okay with this, sorry.” Albedo mumbled while avoiding eye contact. They were very close. Kaeya didn’t get the memo and skimmed over Albedo’s entire face, admiring it. Admiring? What?
“Yeah, this is fine.” His voice was low, as Albedo finally looked at Kaeya. They stood silent for a beat too long and the flower broke. They glided down and Kaeya cleared his throat. The flower brought them back up and they glided over to the other side.
They walked in silence for basically the rest of the way, mostly making small talk. The duo arrived at a clearing just before Albedo’s camp and there was a small hilichurl camp. Only three hilichurls called the camp home, two hilichurls with ice shields, and then a single archer with no element.
“I’ll take the two with shields since I have a better chance of breaking them if you take the archer?” Albedo was scanning the surrounding area, Kaeya thought about the plan and figured that would be the best option.
“Sure, sounds good.” The Captain muttered as he ran towards the archer, hoping to grab its attention so it wouldn’t fire towards Albedo while he fought the other two.
Albedo nodded and began sprinting towards the two with shields. He slams his geo flower down and it staggered them and they tripped backward. One of them fell down and he took his chance and stabbed it in the torso, killing it. As it faded away he turned towards the second one, who held up its shield to block anything Albedo tried.
On the other side of the camp, Kaeya was dodging arrows as he tried to get closer to the hilichurl. He shot ice crystals from the tip of his sword and the hilichurl barely slid out of the way of them all.
“Damn it.” Kaeya mumbled as he lunged toward his enemy however, the hilichurl ignored Kaeya and aimed at Albedo who was finishing up the last hilichurl. Kaeya panicked and wasn't thinking, the next he knew he was running toward the alchemist.
Albedo turned around to a loud grunt, Kaeya on the ground holding his leg. He looked up and saw the archer readying another arrow. Albedo grabbed one of the crystalized ice shards and threw it to Kaeya and he put up a shield. The alchemist ran towards the archer, dodging the arrow and slamming his flower creation just inches in front of the hilichurl, causing it to topple back, Albedo chucked his sword and impaled the archer in the chest. He took a breath before running towards the Captain.
“What happened? I thought you had it under control?” Albedo frantically began basic first aid on Kaeya’s wound. He applied pressure around the wound, smacking Kaeya’s hand away when he reached for the arrow.
“It aimed at you and I wasn’t thinking.” Kaeya stared at the wound, also confused why he reacted the way he did. Albedo snapped the arrow in half and chucked it to the side.
“Obviously, Luckily we are just outside my camp.” Albedo began to wrap his leg with the bandage he pulled out from his bag. “Do you think you can walk? I’ll help you of course.” The Captain grunted as he began to sit up.
“I believe so.” Kaeya slowly made it to his feet with the help of Albedo and they slowly made their way toward camp.
Albedo helped Kaeya down on his sleeping bag and started a fire. He told Kaeya he needed to finish taking down the hilichurl camp and that he wouldn’t be long. The Captain was alone with an injured leg and confusing thoughts.
Kaeya stared into the fire, trying not to shift his leg. “You are our last hope.” He mumbled to the fire. The Captain sighed and leaned back. He was exhausted. He let his eyes slide close and he drifted into a deep sleep.
“Captain.” A voice came from the darkness.
“Captain.” It repeated.
“Captain!” It got louder.
"Captain Kaeya!” Kaeya shot up, immediately wincing in pain, and went to grab his leg only for his hand to be swatted away.
“Hands off.” Albedo stared into Kaeya’s eyes. Shivers ran down his spine and not just because Albedo was patching up his leg.
“You are good at first aid.” Kaeya cringed at the phrasing. He looked back into the fire, it was smaller than before. Albedo chuckled as he finished rewrapping his leg after stitching up his wound. Wait, when did he use stitches?
Kaeya examined his wrapped leg and then looked at Albedo who was smiling at the Captain. Kaeya looked away and towards his bag. He remembered he had a bottle of wine.
“Do you think I could get you to pour me a glass of wine?” The Captain had his usual flirty tone, which cause Albedo to shake his head and sigh.
“Fine, as long as you’ll share.” The alchemist walked over to Kaeya’s bag and pulled out the bottle and the two glasses and began pouring both of them a glass of wine. Albedo handed Kaeya the glass and began sipping on his.
“Nothing better than Dandelion wine.” Kaeya examined his glass and then chuckled to himself. Albedo watched the Captain down his first glass. He took another sip and noticed Kaeya struggling to stand up.
“You need to stay off your feet.” The alchemist held out his hand trying to stop Kaeya, who just ignored him and continued to stand up. Albedo watched as Kaeya stumbled over to the table where he had set the wine bottle on.
“Calm down, the more I drink, the less I feel.” Kaeya trumiphly pours his own glass. Albedo couldn’t help but let out a quiet laugh. He turned his attention to the fire as it slowly shrunk, he sat his glass to the side and grabbed a log to place on the fire. “What time is it?” Kaeya turned to face the alchemist.
“Around ten I’d say.” Albedo sat back down on the chair near the fire and stared into it. Kaeya stumbled his way back over with the bottle in hand. He offered to fill Albedo’s glass, but he declined.
“I was out for a while.” He mumbled to himself. Albedo wasn’t sure how to answer so he just nodded. “Thank you for stitching me up. I’m impressed by how well you did.” He once again examined his wrapped leg. Albedo turned to face the Captain and frowned a little.
“It won’t matter if you keep moving it and walking on it.” He had a stern tone, it made Kaeya laugh. The alchemist stared into his eyes, frowning even more.
“It’s cute when you frown like that.” Kaeya swirled his wine glass, how many has he had now? He watched Albedo’s face turn a light shade of pink, it made him smile like an idiot.
“It’s not cute when you go and get hurt.” The alchemist’s voice rose a little and it took Kaeya by surprise. He sounded genuinely worried, he was fine, so why is Albedo so worried?
“Albedo, I’m fine. No need to get worked up.” Kaeya downed his fourth glass of wine. Albedo sighed as he watched the Captain pour yet another glass of wine. He stood up and grabbed the bottle out of Kaeya’s hand, which cause a small whine to fall out of his mouth.
"Stay focused." Albedo repeated to himself. The Cavalry Captain was drunk, he had to stay focused. Albedo placed the bottle of wine down and placed his hands on the table.
“Only because I helped you.” The alchemist stated. He turned around to face the Captain and he was gone, he faced the bottle and Kaeya was on the other side of the table pouring his sixth glass. “Hey! That’s enough for tonight.” Albedo snatched the bottle out of Kaeya’s hands, spilling a couple of drops on the table, inches away from some paperwork. Kaeya drank his last glass as if it were a shot, he slammed his glass on the table and made his way over to the other side of the table, standing inches from Albedo’s face.
“You are really pretty.” Kaeya slurred his words, but Albedo got the gist of what he said. The Captain slumped over and rested his head on the alchemist’s shoulder. "Why do you only call me Captain? It really bothers me."
Albedo hesitated before placing his hand on the back of Kaeya’s head, running his fingers slowly through his blue hair, and sighed. "I don't know, out of respect I suppose." He slowly rested his head on top of Kaeya's, feeling his chest rise and fall with every breath as the Captain drifted in and out of consciousness.
After a few minutes had passed, Albedo guided the Captain to his sleeping bag and helped him get comfortable before walking back over to his table to clean up. He couldn’t focus. What just happened? He should’ve known better when Kaeya asked for a drink. He sighed once more before giving up and heading to his sleeping bag, which Kaeya had shuffled closer to his. The alchemist was too tired to move it elsewhere and crawled into his sleeping bag and drifted into a deep sleep.
The bright morning sun peered through the entrance of the cave, right into Albedo’s eyes. He grumbled and slowly pulled them open. Albedo tried to pull his hand to his face but was met with resistance, he glanced over and Kaeya’s arms were wrapped around his and each time he tried to pull away the Captain would pull back harder. The alchemist gave up and stared at the roof of the cave.
An hour or so later he felt the grip on his arm loosen and he glanced over without moving his head and watched Kaeya’s eyes slowly open. The Captain’s eyes widened almost immediately and the morning sun danced over the shades of blue in his eyes. It was beautiful. Albedo watched embarrassment creep its way onto the Captain's face as Kaeya shoved himself away. Albedo thought it’d be a better idea if he pretended to be asleep so he didn’t make things worse.
“Shit.” Kaeya mumbled under his breath as he limped over to grab a bottle of water. He drank about half before hearing Albedo begin to stir. He looked away and finished off his water before he finally greeted the alchemist.
“Good morning, sorry if I woke you.” The Captain awkwardly chuckled, avoiding eye contact as Albedo got closer. “Did you sleep well?” Kaeya glanced over and saw their sleeping bags were practically on top of each other, he quickly looked at Albedo and awkwardly smiled.
Albedo smiled and began to brew some coffee, “I slept well enough, what about you? I imagine you’re not as used to sleeping on the ground as I am.” The alchemist let out a raspy laugh. Kaeya’s heart began beating a little faster.
“I slept well. It was actually pretty cozy.” He quietly said into his empty bottle, “What happened after we drank last night? I mean I remember a bit, but after my third glass, at least I think it was my third. I don't remember much after that.” He intently looked into Albedo’s eyes.
Albedo slowly looked up and into the Captain’s eyes, noticing his worry Albedo simply smiled. “We argued about you drinking more and then you passed out.” The alchemist glanced back at the sleeping bags, “You had gotten cold so you scooted your bag next to mine.” He continued to prepare his coffee as he heard a sigh of relief fall out of Kaeya’s mouth.
“I see, sorry for any trouble I may have caused you.” The Captain reached over and poured a cup of coffee as well. Albedo let out a laugh that startled Kaeya. “What?” The word practically fell out of his mouth.
“Oh, nothing. It’s just that's what you said last time I helped you when you were drunk.” Albedo took a sip of the hot coffee then he placed his hand on his chin. “Maybe you should stop drinking around me. You get kind of clingy and well, flirty. I might get the wrong idea.” A sly smile crept onto the alchemist’s face as he brought his mug up for another sip.
Kaeya couldn’t mistake it this time. Albedo was definitely flirting with him. “Oh? Maybe I should clarify then.” The Captain walked over to the opposite side of the table and stood inches, no centimeters away from Albedo’s face. Both of their faces were dusted with a shade of pink. A moment of silence passed, and they stared at each other, quietly breathing. Kaeya examined the alchemist’s teal, no turquoise eyes. He took a deep breath and tilted his head, letting his eyes close. He felt Albedo’s arms begin to wrap around his waist. Kaeya could feel Albedo’s breath on his lips, their lips grazed,
“Albedo?” A voice called out from somewhere behind them. They quickly backed off from each other and turned to watch Eula walk around the corner of the cave and greet them. Kaeya glanced at Albedo who was obviously trying to collect his thoughts, The Captain stifled a laugh, earning a glare from the alchemist.
“Captain Eula, what brings you out here?” Albedo walked over to the other side of the table and began restacking his already stacked paperwork. Eula stopped next to Kaeya and glanced down at his wrapped leg.
“How did you get injured? How long ago did it happen?” Eula crossed her arms and gave Kaeya a disappointed stare as she waited for him to answer. Albedo looked at Kaeya’s wrapped leg then looked at Eula then finally back to his paperwork.
“Well, when we arrived yesterday, we ran into a hilichurl camp, and then I got shot in the leg by an archer. It’s fine though, Albedo patched me up nicely.” Kaeya smiled at the alchemist who looked up at the mention of his name. Eula glanced between the two men and sighed.
“Maybe you are due for a training session with me.” Eula gave him a condescending smirk and Kaeya frowned. “I was just dropping by, I heard voices from here and I wanted to make sure it wasn’t like Fatui or Treasure Hoarders.” She uncrossed her arms and leaned onto the table.
“Well, thank you for checking on things. Jean sent us up here to clean up any hilichurl camps, we’ll be here all week.” Albedo finally stopped restacking his papers and walked back over next to Kaeya, “However since Captain Kaeya got hurt, we might just be staying here and working on cleaning up.” The alchemist let out a small laugh. Kaeya frowned at the use of his title then sighed and leaned on the table with his head resting on his hand.
“I see, well I was just out training so I better get back to it. I might stop by again sometime this week.” Eula waved and walked out of the cave entrance, disappearing around the corner.
The camp was silent for a while, Albedo was straightening up his workspace and Kaeya did whatever his leg allowed him to, such as collecting firewood that was close by. Albedo would catch himself staring at the Captain. What happened between them? Everything was moving a little fast.
“Damn it.” Kaeya mumbled as he knelt down and fiddled with his leg wrapping. Albedo walked over and hovered behind the Captain.
“What do you think you are doing?” Albedo had his hands on his hips. Kaeya flinched and turned to face the alchemist, standing back up. Albedo glanced down and the wrapping slowly turned red. “Go sit down, I’ll be right there.” Albedo picked up the firewood Kaeya left and brought it over next to the fire.
Albedo knelt down next to Kaeya’s leg and slowly began to unwrap his bandage. Kaeya’s cheeks flushed as he looked towards the fire. The alchemist gently rubbed the area around his wound before beginning to cut the old stitches and cleaning up the wound.
“This might hurt.” Albedo’s voice was soft and sincere. He slowly began restitching Kaeya’s wound. Albedo was so gentle, every time Kaeya would react to the pain, the alchemist would slow down. Albedo finished restitching and then redressing the wound, Kaeya examined the bandage only to have his hand swatted away. “You don’t need it to reopen again.” Albedo scolded the Captain.
Albedo put away the first aid kit and then stood behind Kaeya, “Does your wrapping feel comfortable, Captain?” The alchemist sat in the chair that was next to Kaeya. The Captain frowned at Albedo.
“Captain? Please for once call me Kaeya. I think we are well-passed titles.” Kaeya leaned his head back and looked at the roof of the cave. Albedo glanced over to Kaeya and then back to the fire.
“Do you remember what you said to me last night? Or were you too drunk?” Albedo teased Kaeya. The Captain looked over to the alchemist before shrugging,
“Guess it depends. What do you want me to remember?” Kaeya leaned towards Albedo and smirked, “That I called you cute? Or pretty?” Kaeya leaned closer. “Or that it upsets me when you only call me Captain?” Kaeya’s nose grazed Albedo’s. The alchemist stared into Kaeya’s eyes like they were night skies full of stars. Albedo’s heart was pounding in his ears.
“I guess I want you to remember all of it. Kaeya.” Albedo said softly, he closed the distance and their lips met. Kaeya’s hands cupped Albedo’s cheeks and tangled into his hair. He pulled them to their feet. The kiss was slow, almost sensual, Albedo placed his hand on the Captain's waist, and Kaeya sighed into the kiss. Albedo pulled away slowly and smiled.
“See, my name isn’t so bad.” Kaeya rested his head on Albedo’s shoulder. He let his eyes close, “I’m exhausted.” The Captain mumbled into his shoulder. The alchemist leaned his head against Kaeya’s and began to run his fingers through his long hair.
“Then I suppose we should head to bed.” His voice was low and sincere. Albedo placed a small kiss on Kaeya’s head before pulling away. Kaeya placed his hand where Albedo kissed him and smiled before following the alchemist to their sleeping bags.
Kaeya dragged his over slightly away from Albedo’s, only to have it pulled back to where it was previously and he looked at Albedo who was frowning. The Captain started to laugh.
“And you say I’m the clingy one.” Kaeya crawled into his bag and patted the spot next to him, Albedo looked away as his cheeks flushed pink.
“It’s warmer this way.” The alchemist mumbled, and Kaeya stifled another laugh. They face one another, the Captain gently ran his fingers through Albedo’s hair. He placed a kiss on the alchemist’s forehead.
“Goodnight.” Kaeya mumbled as he grabbed Albedo’s hand and squeezed it. Albedo smiled at the gesture.
“Goodnight, Kaeya.” Albedo let his eyes close, only to immediately open them when Kaeya kissed him once more.
Kaeya pulled away and smiled, “You should say my name more often.” He finally said before closing his eyes, Albedo’s face was dusted with a light shade of pink before he rolled over and fell into a deep sleep.
“This is nice, do you think?” Kaeya poured two glasses of wine while looking around the field in Windrise. He glanced over only to be met with Albedo smiling softly. Albedo reached for his glass of wine and began sipping it.
A loud explosion startled Kaeya, he shot up then looked behind him, then back to Albedo only for him to be gone, in his place was a dark figure that he couldn’t quite make out.
“You are our last hope. Do you think you have time to go on dates with unimportant people?” The figure got closer to Kaeya, the Captain felt as if he was tied down and couldn’t move. “Well, this one isn’t even a real person, but a creation.” The figure gestured to where Albedo lay, motionless. Kaeya fell to his knees and scrambled over to where the alchemist was.
“He is a real person, the fact he feels emotion should be proof of that.” Kaeya glared at the figure, but only the figure was gone. The Captain looked down and Albedo’s body was gone as well, he was alone. Kaeya curled into a ball and warm tears ran down his cold cheeks, a jolt of pain in his leg made him flinch. He glanced down and his stitches opened once more.
He blinked and he was in Albedo’s office and the alchemist was fixing up his injury once more. Kaeya sighed and placed his hand on Albedo’s cheek. The alchemist looked up and was met with a soft smile painted across Kaeya’s face.
“Captain? Is something wrong?” Albedo finished up restitching and backed off. Kaeya frowned and looked down at his hand.
“Captain.” Kaeya mumbled, Albedo looked at the man with confusion. He sat across from Kaeya and sighed.
“Are you sure you are okay?” The alchemist leaned over his desk and stared at Kaeya. The Captain stood up and began limping his way toward the door.
“Everything is just swell, Chief Alchemist.” Kaeya slammed the door behind him and leaned against the closed door. He slid down to the floor and brought his knees to his chest and he closed his eyes.
“Kaeya?” A soft voice spoke into his ear, “Hey. Wake up.” Kaeya could feel he was being shaken, but he didn’t have the energy to open his eyes.
“Kaeya!” The voice shouted, causing Kaeya to finally open his eyes. He immediately felt relieved when his eyes met Albedo’s, he reached up and cupped the blonde’s cheek. Albedo placed his hand on top of Kaeya’s and smiled.
“Good morning, Kaeya.” The alchemist slid Kaeya’s hand to his lips and placed a soft kiss on top of it. “It looked like you were having a bad dream.” Albedo mumbled. Kaeya glanced away and sighed.
“You could say that.” The Captain awkwardly chuckled. He looked back to Albedo and smiled, “Don’t worry. It’s fine, now anyways.” Kaeya shuffled to his feet and limped over to the table and began to brew some coffee, only to see a cup already poured and ready.
“It’s actually almost noon.” Albedo stood next to the Captain. Kaeya sighed as he looked into the cup. “Eula came by again earlier and I sent her back to headquarters with a letter.” The alchemist fiddled with his hands. “I asked Jean to let us return early.” Kaeya turned his gaze to Albedo.
“Just cause I’m hurt?” Kaeya didn’t mean to raise his voice, Albedo frowned at the Captain. “I can still help around.” The alchemist shook his head.
“You broke open your stitches by collecting wood.” Albedo leaned on the table and crossed his arms. Kaeya opened his mouth to speak, only to close it immediately. Albedo let out a chuckle, “She’ll be back tomorrow with Jean’s answer. For now take it easy, Okay?” Albedo began tidying up the shelves.
“Yea fine. At least let me help you.” Kaeya walked over and stood next to the alchemist. Albedo sighed and handed him a stack of paper, before smiling.
“If you wish to help, sort these papers by date.” Albedo continued to dust the different items on the shelf. Kaeya groaned and then began sorting the papers.
“That looks better, don't you think?” Albedo backed up and looked over all his shelves. Kaeya sighed, the alchemist glanced over and saw he still had a couple of papers to sort through. “You’re still not done?” Albedo stood next to Kaeya.
“Look, there are a lot of papers.” Kaeya gestured to the large stack he already finished, then to the much smaller stack, he was still going through. Albedo smiled,
“How about you relax while I finish this up?” Albedo pushed Kaeya lightly, the Captain sighed and stumbled over to the fire pit, and started a fire.
“I can’t believe it’s already late.” He mumbled to himself as the flint created sparks, lighting the kindling. Albedo looked over and sighed,
“It’s what you get for sleeping in.” He quickly finished stacking the papers and walked over to Kaeya. The Captain glanced up at Albedo.
“Then why did you let me sleep in so late?” Kaeya stared into the fire as Albedo sat next to him. The Captain added a few logs to the fire.
“You need rest, and if you are asleep you can’t open your wound.” Albedo poked near his wrappings. Kaeya scoffed as he smacked Albedo’s hand away.
“O ye of little faith.” The Captain stared at Albedo, the alchemist laughed and Kaeya frowned. “I’m not that useless.” Kaeya mumbled.
“Never said you were, I’m just worried about you. No use to make it worse.” Albedo leaned against Kaeya’s shoulder. “Speaking of worry, Are you sure you don’t want to talk about your bad dream? I woke you up because you were moving so much, and your face was scrunched up.”
Kaeya sighed, “I really don’t really want to talk about it. It was just about something in my past and then a couple of other things.” Albedo looked at Kaeya with a worried expression before looking into the fire.
“Okay, fine. If you ever want to talk about it, I’m here to listen.” Albedo mumbled, Kaeya sighed and looked at the alchemist, and gave him a small smile.
“Thank you, maybe in the future. Right now, I’d like to get more sleep.” Kaeya leaned back and placed his arm over his eyes. Albedo quietly chuckled.
“Sure, goodnight Kaeya.” The alchemist leaned back on his hands and watched the fire for a while longer.
“Albedo?” Eula called for the alchemist as she walked into the cave, she glanced over at the dying fire and saw Albedo mindlessly staring into it. “Ah, there you are. I’ve got Master Jean’s reply.” Albedo turned to look at the Captain and walked over to her. Eula handed Albedo the letter and he began silently reading it.
“We will be leaving the mountain whenever Captain Kaeya wakes up.” Albedo softly smiled as he looked up at Eula, and she returned the smile.
“Are you gonna need help? Since Kaeya is injured.” Eula chuckled as she glanced over to the sleeping Captain. Albedo sighed,
“No, we should be fine.” Albedo began packing up as quietly as possible, Eula walked over to Kaeya and crouched next to him. The alchemist glanced over, “Please let him sleep. He didn’t have a good night yesterday and he needs his rest.” Eula turned to look toward the alchemist and sighed.
“Yeah, okay. At least let me help you pack since he is asleep.” She began to fold up Albedo’s sleeping bag, she began to move slower when Kaeya shifted. “I hope he is a heavy sleeper.” Eula quietly chuckled
“Captain Kaeya, wake up.” A soft voice spoke close to Kaeya’s ear, his eyes fluttered open, and saw Albedo smiling at him. The Captain immediately frowned.
“Captain?” Kaeya sat up slowly, Albedo awkwardly smiled and gestured behind him. Kaeya saw Eula packing things up on the table. He turned his gaze back at Albedo, still frowning. “Yeah, yeah I’m up.”
“Good morning Kaeya, you sleep well?” Eula had a smug smile like she knew something he didn’t. Kaeya glanced around and saw everything other than his sleeping bag was packed.
“Ah, sorry. You should’ve woken me sooner so I could’ve helped.” The Cavalry Captain began rolling up his sleeping bag and hooked it to his bag. Eula laughed as she patted his back.
“I tried to, but the Chief Alchemist told me no.” She glanced over to Albedo who was snuffing out the fire and breaking any charred logs into small pieces. Kaeya stared longingly toward Albedo and shoved Eula’s arm off his shoulder.
“Well, thank you for helping him in my place, but we should be fine from here.” Kaeya leaned his weight on his good leg and crossed his arms, Eula scoffed.
“That’s what he said, but I have a hard time believing either of you.” She started to walk towards the entrance of the cave, “At least let me escort you to the Adventurer’s camp just outside of Dragonspine.” She replicated Kaeya’s stance and he sighed.
“If that would make you feel better.” Kaeya threw his bag onto his back and stood next to The Reconnaissance Captain, “We are ready if you are, Chief Alchemist.” Kaeya shouted to Albedo who was scanning the cave for anything he may have forgotten.
Albedo turned to face Kaeya and frowned, “I suppose I am ready as well.” He walked over and stood next to the two Captains.
“Let's go then.” Eula marched forward, almost leaving behind the boys. Albedo and Kaeya share a glance before following suit.
They walked for what felt like hours when Eula suddenly stopped and crouched, she gestured ahead and there was a small hilichurl camp only consisting of two hilichurls. Eula told the duo to stay put as she took care of them. Kaeya and Albedo waited patiently behind some rocks.
"You've barely spoken to me this entire time." Albedo mumbled while looking towards Eula as she dodged an arrow. Kaeya scoffed and stared at the alchemist.
"What do you want me to say?" Kaeya half-whispers as he directs his gaze to the ground. Albedo glances over to Kaeya and sighed.
After a minute of silence, Kaeya looks over at Albedo. "I just don't understand why Eula being here has anything to do with you dropping my title." The alchemist leaned closer to Kaeya before replying,
"I just don't think it's anyone's business when it comes to what is happening between us." Albedo whispered directly into Kaeya's ear, his breath tickled and sent shivers down the Captain's spine. Kaeya turned his head to face Albedo and the tip of their noses touched. Kaeya can't help but look at the alchemist's lips, then back into his eyes.
"You dropping my title doesn't mean anything to anyone else, and if it does, then I say they are a tad too curious." Kaeya smirked as he began to lean closer, his breath warm against Albedo's lips. The alchemist glanced over to Eula as she finished off the first hilichurl and began running towards the second. He returned his gaze to the Captain who wore a soft, but smug smile as he grazed his lips against Albedo's.
Albedo replied by simply closing the small gap. Kaeya smiled into the kiss as he could feel Albedo's anxiety grow the longer the kiss went on. It wasn't a deep kiss nor a long one but helped with Kaeya's uncertainty about how Albedo truly felt. After they pulled away Kaeya rested his head on Albedo's shoulder. The alchemist sighed and placed a small kiss on the top of the Captain's head. It made Kaeya want to kiss the alchemist again but, all good things must come to an end.
"C'mon, boys! Before more show up!" Eula leaned on her claymore as she waited for the two men to catch up. Kaeya leaned on Albedo for stability, but it was mostly because he wanted to stay close to the alchemist. Albedo had his hand resting on Kaeya's waist as they slowly made their way toward Eula.
The rest of the walk was still silent but it was a comfortable silence, as they came up to the adventurer camp outside of Dragonspine, Eula waved to the boys as she made her way back up into the mountain. Kaeya was more than relieved that she was gone, don't get him wrong he likes Eula well enough but right now the Captain is desperate to be alone with Albedo once more. He is going to miss being on this expedition.
Albedo helped Kaeya sit on a nearby bench as he went to explain the situation to Iris, Kaeya sighed and stared a little too hard at the alchemist when all of a sudden he was jumped scared by someone calling to him.
"Captain Kaeya? What are you doing here?" A timid voice called out to him, he flinched as he turned towards the green-haired alchemist. He smiled before replying,
"Ah, Sucrose. Albedo and I were on our way back to Mondstadt after our trip to Dragonspine was cut short." He gestures to his wrapped leg, he watches the timid girl bounce between him, Albedo, and his injury. It was clear she didn't know how to answer him. "What brings you here?" Sucrose awkwardly smiled,
"Timaeus needed me to pick up something from Iris, then I saw you sitting here so I thought I'd say hi." She fiddled with her hands in front of her, Kaeya couldn't help but smile. His gaze shifted over when he saw Albedo approaching, he could feel his smile get wider.
"Sucrose, here on business?" Albedo stood next to her, she greeted him with a smile. Kaeya watched as her cheeks slowly turned a light shade of pink. His smile faded immediately, he shouldn't be jealous, but he can't help it. He finally understands what it was he felt for Albedo and now the Captain has to witness someone go through the same thing he did, with the same person. Kaeya looked away, he shouldn't do something stupid.
"Mr.Albedo, I am! Timaeus needed something so he sent me to get it since he is knee-deep in research." She stuttered, then she giggled. Albedo smiled and glanced at Kaeya, who was clearly upset about something. His smile faded slightly as he turned back to Sucrose. The timid alchemist could tell his mood changed, she looked toward Kaeya who was glaring at the table in front of him. She awkwardly laughed before saying her goodbyes.
Albedo held his hand out to Kaeya to help him to his feet, Kaeya hesitated, he has never hesitated. Then he remembered all the light kisses Albedo had given him and he smiled to himself before quickly grabbing the alchemist's hand. Albedo had a brief look of worry before he returned the smile and put the Captain's arm over his shoulder as the two began making their way home.
The walk home felt like it wasn't nearly as long as the first time, even with them having to stop for breaks more frequently to let Kaeya rest. Albedo was still nagging Kaeya about being careful and not reopening his wound for a second time. The Captain honestly just found it amusing, he just enjoyed seeing Albedo worry about him so much. The alchemist didn't find it funny how much the Captain was testing his patience, but he could tell Kaeya was in fact listening to him just by how he primarily walked on his good leg and stopped to rest when Albedo told him to.
The duo made it to the cliff that was above Windrise, they were so close to finally being home and Kaeya would be able to get his leg healed properly by Barbara at the Cathedral. Kaeya stopped and looked toward the tree, it had to be just past noon at this point.
"We were supposed to come here at dusk." Kaeya mumbled as he sat on a rock near the edge. Albedo stood behind him and looked down at the Captain.
"I'm surprised you even remembered saying that. I wasn't even sure you had meant it at the time." The alchemist turned his gaze to the tree and smiled. Kaeya glanced toward Albedo and sighed.
"Of course I meant it. Why else would I have said anything?" Kaeya stood and faced Albedo. His hands made their way onto the alchemist's hips and he pulled Albedo closer. Albedo put his hands on Kaeya's chest and looked into the Captain's eyes, smiling. Kaeya bent slightly down and their lips met. Albedo's hand made its way up and into Kaeya's hair, Kaeya smiled into the kiss. The Captain pulled Albedo closer and their bodies were flush against each other. Albedo cupped Kaeya's cheek before finally pulling away, earning a sigh from Kaeya.
"We are almost home, we should keep moving." Albedo softly smiled at the Captain before pulling further away. Kaeya sighed once more before grabbing Albedo's hand.
"At least let me hold your hand until the bridge?" Kaeya smiled at Albedo's hand as he began to intertwine their fingers. Albedo simply nodded and the two men continued on their way.
The rest of the walk went by too fast if you were to ask Kaeya, once the bridge to Mondstadt was in view, Albedo slowly retrieved his hand and placed it on his bag strap. The Captain stared at his hand as he walked and frowned. They scared Timmy's pigeons as they approached, earning a glare from the child. Kaeya apologetically waved as he followed loosely behind Albedo.
The moment they walked through the gates, a wave of relief washed over Kaeya, he wasn't even sure why. Maybe he was homesick, speaking of home, Diluc stood near Katheryne's booth with his arms crossed obviously waiting for something, or perhaps someone?
"Diluc?" Kaeya was shocked to see his brother outside of the tavern since recently he had thrown himself into work. Albedo stood near Kaeya as he greeted his red-headed brother.
"I thought I told you to be safe? And you went and got hurt." Diluc relaxed a little as he gestured to his wrapped leg. Kaeya glanced down as if he had forgotten himself. Then back to his brother with a look of confusion.
"Why do you say that like you knew before I got here?" Kaeya wore a smug smile and then crossed his arms. Diluc cleared his throat and replicated Kaeya's stance.
"I didn't, I just watched you limp your way over through the gates." Diluc was clearly avoiding eye contact, Kaeya began to laugh so much that he accidentally stepped on his bad leg and flinched due to the pain, Diluc stifled a laugh.
"You were worried about me, plus you're not the best liar. You already knew I got hurt, why else would you be standing here?" Kaeya smiled at his brother, Diluc relaxed completely as he turned his gaze towards the alchemist.
"Thank you for taking care of my idiot brother." He patted Albedo on the shoulder, Albedo let out a quiet chuckle before nodding.
"I can handle the paperwork back at headquarters if you wouldn't mind accompanying Captain Kaeya to the Cathedral to get properly healed?" Albedo glanced at Kaeya, who tried to hide his annoyance, before looking towards Diluc once again. Diluc sighed before smiling slightly.
"Yeah, I'll take care of him." Diluc began gently pushing Kaeya toward the Cathedral, Kaeya sighed before giving in and walking alongside his brother. He glanced back to Albedo who wore a smile and waved, Kaeya returned the smile before turning his gaze back in front of him.
The trip to the Cathedral was uneventful, the brothers mostly walked in silence. Barbara was quick to heal his leg and denied Kaeya when he offered to pay for her services, saying it was her pleasure to help out her sister's friends.
Kaeya was relieved to be able to walk normally again and the brothers stood just outside the Cathedral, looking toward the statue.
"I've been dreaming of my father recently." Kaeya broke the silence as he leaned on the handrail. Diluc continued to stare out at the statue but was clearly listening. "I keep hearing the words he said to me the night he left me. You are our last hope." The Captain glanced at his brother who finally broke his gaze from the statue.
"What do you think it means? I mean, why do you think you are thinking about it?" Diluc watched as Kaeya avoided eye contact and was clearly thinking of a reply. Kaeya sighed before answering.
"Well, recently I had been made aware that I, well, that I have romantic feelings for someone. I guess I'm just worried that I'm disappointing my father because I'm 'wasting time' on unimportant things" Kaeya made air quotes, then turned his gaze back towards the statue once more. He heard his brother sigh but didn't look away.
"Do you feel that you are wasting time?" Diluc's tone was sincere, it caught Kaeya off guard. He half-expected him to joke about him having a crush and definitely didn't expect Diluc to offer actual advice. Kaeya shook his head as he turned toward his brother.
"Not at all. This is exactly what I wish to do with my life right now." Kaeya pushed off the rail and crossed his arms as he faced Diluc, who simply offered a smile.
"Then why worry about your father? He isn't here. Hell, he abandoned you, why should his opinion matter anymore?" Diluc rested his hand on Kaeya's shoulder, "look Kaeya, I've missed you. You should really come home more often. I have to head back to the tavern, but please stop by later." Diluc pulled his brother into a hug. Kaeya stood dumbfounded, he never thought Diluc would ever admit to missing him, let alone hug him. Kaeya slowly wrapped his arms around Diluc's back and leaned into the hug. He needed this.
"Yeah, I can do that." Kaeya softly smiled, as he pulled away. Diluc waved as he descended the stairs, Kaeya watched him go before finally heading towards the headquarters.
Kaeya walked through the entrance of the headquarters, it felt nice to be back. Even if it meant Jean throwing him back into assloads of work. He headed up the stairs and Albedo's office door was open, he peeked in and saw Jean and Albedo chatting. Kaeya lightly knocked on the open door and walked in.
"Kaeya, I see you got your leg healed. How are you feeling?" Jean turned towards the Captain and smiled. Kaeya glanced over at Albedo who had a soft smile, Kaeya returned the smile before answering the Acting Grandmaster.
"I'm feeling a lot better now. Is there anything you need from me before I head home?" Kaeya looked between both Jean and Albedo as if he was asking them both. Jean placed her hand on her chin before shaking her head. Albedo stared intently at Kaeya before opening his mouth to speak.
"I will need your help filling out some paperwork if you can spare the time." Albedo spoke slowly and then smirked at the Captain. Kaeya felt his cheeks warm and he brought his hand to his face.
"I'll leave you to it." Jean smiled and walked out the door, closing it behind her. Kaeya approached Albedo's desk and leaned on it, Albedo replicated the Captain's stance and they left a small gap between their noses as they smiled at each other. Albedo went to close the gap but Kaeya pulled away and wore a smug smirk as the alchemist scowled at him.
"We probably shouldn't do this at work." Kaeya pushed himself off the desk and crossed his arms, letting out a small chuckle. Albedo walked around to the other side of his desk and stood in front of Kaeya. Albedo grabbed the collar of Kaeya's jacket and pulled down to be eye level with him, Kaeya tried to hide his surprise behind a smirk.
"Then don't toy with me, Captain." Albedo let go of Kaeya's collar and began to walk back to his chair, only for the Captain to grab his arm and turn him back towards him. Kaeya caressed Albedo's cheek before pulling the alchemist into a kiss. It was a short one, nothing too special about it, but it made Albedo's heart skip a beat. Once they pulled away Albedo gave Kaeya a sincere smile.
"I'll try to get used to not using your title, as long as you agree to stop by my office more often. Deal?" Albedo fixed Kaeya's messy collar and flattened out any wrinkles. Kaeya smiled and tried not to laugh.
"Yeah, okay deal." Kaeya pulled Albedo into a hug. He really should've known how much he appreciates the closeness a hug offered. Albedo tightly wrapped his arms around the Captain and sighed.
"I don't actually need your help with the paperwork, honestly you seem too slow if you ask me." Albedo smirked at the Captain, who scoffed and then chuckled.
"Yeah yeah. I promised to meet Diluc anyways. I'll see you tomorrow then?" Kaeya began walking towards the door and placed his hand on the knob. Albedo simply nodded.
"Oh! One more thing." Kaeya let go of the doorknob and walked back over to Albedo's desk. "Could I assume that we are together? Or would you prefer a couple of dates first?" He smirked at the alchemist. Albedo's cheeks flushed a deep pink before he replied.
"One date, then I'll let you know." Albedo cleared his throat and smiled, Kaeya immediately returned the smile, but he was of course smiling like an idiot.
"How about this Friday, after work? I already have an idea." Kaeya stood by the door as he waited for an answer.
"This Friday it is." Albedo sat in his chair and leaned his head on his hand as he watched Kaeya walk out the door, smiling like a dork.
Kaeya slowly opened the door to the Angel’s Share and was greeted by Diluc smiling. It was an odd feeling, for once he felt invited to be there. He took his normal seat, but now that he thinks about it his seat is almost always empty when he arrives. Kaeya smiled at the thought of Diluc shooing any other customers from this specific barstool.
“A glass of Dandelion wine?” Charles asked, Kaeya nodded and turned his gaze to his brother who was helping someone else. Charles handed the Captain the glass before walking over to the sink. Kaeya sipped on his wine as he waited for Diluc to be finished.
It didn’t take long for Diluc to lean on the counter in front of Kaeya. Diluc sighed before speaking, “Don’t drink too much, please. I don’t think it’s a good idea while you are recovering.” He stood back up and began drying the newly washed dishes. Kaeya scoffed as he sat his empty glass on the bar counter.
“How am I recovering? I’m fully healed, Barbara said so.” Kaeya tapped his glass as if he was asking for a refill. Diluc shook his head as he filled the glass. The Captain wore a smug smile as he began to drink.
“Then tell me about the lucky person. The one that you have a crush on.” Diluc laughed and crossed his arms. Kaeya nearly spits out his drink and frantically looked around before frowning at his brother.
“We are keeping it on the down low, so if you would mind being quiet. That would be amazing.” Kaeya stirred his glass as he went for another sip. He should’ve expected that Diluc would at some point tease him about this.
“I doubt anyone is listening, plus I doubt they’d care.” Diluc gestured around the bar and Kaeya looked for anyone who might listen. The Captain sighed as he sat his glass down.
“It’s Albedo.” Kaeya muttered, he watched a knowing smile appear on his brother’s face. “But we aren’t together yet. So please keep it between us.” Kaeya half-pleaded with Diluc. His brother’s smile became soft and he placed his hand on the Captain’s shoulder.
“I will and you give it your all, okay?” Diluc removed his hand before continuing, “I have to get back to work, I’m sure I’ll see you tomorrow.” He smiled as Kaeya sighed. Kaeya felt like he was being kicked out, but decided it was for the best. He finished his glass of wine before standing up.
“Goodnight Diluc.” Kaeya waved as he pushed the door open. Diluc returned the wave before yelling after him,
“Goodnight. Get home safe.” Diluc glanced over at Charles who patted his shoulder. Kaeya smiled as he walked home.
The next two days went by rather quickly, Jean luckily didn’t throw too much at Kaeya. He alternated between stopping by Albedo’s office and The Angel’s Share after work. However once Friday came around the day couldn’t go any slower. Jean once again had Kaeya patrolling around the city and there was next to nothing to do.
“Thank you again Captain Kaeya, I really thought I would’ve been able to find Roger on my own.” Margaret grabbed the cat out of the Captain’s hands, once again shaking his hand, and wasn’t letting go. Kaeya awkwardly chuckled and glanced behind him. Albedo stood in line at The Good Hunter, Kaeya smiled widely.
“It was my pleasure, but I must be going.” Kaeya slipped his hand out of the bar owner's grasp and handed her the cat toy before almost running towards The Good Hunter. He didn’t say anything as he approached the alchemist. Albedo glanced in his direction and smiled, it was a soft, sincere smile. Kaeya could just melt.
“Kaeya, here for lunch?” Albedo bumped the Captain’s arm, Kaeya wished he could just pull the alchemist against him. Kaeya nodded before speaking,
“Mind if I join you? I’ll pay.” Kaeya smirked as he patted Albedo’s shoulder. The alchemist simply smiled and gestured him ahead. Kaeya felt butterflies in his stomach, why was he so nervous today? He shook his head as he ordered.
The two men sat across from each other as they ate, it was a comfortable silence. Kaeya leaned slightly forward after he finished and watched Albedo finish eating. Albedo set his fork on his empty plate before making eye contact, he gave the Captain a look of confusion.
“I would like to discuss our date if you don't mind.” Kaeya quietly spoke, he blocked his mouth from anyone seeing. He watched Albedo’s face flush a light shade of pink, Kaeya really wanted to kiss him.
“Sure.” Albedo simply said then smiled softly. Kaeya leaned back in his chair and returned the smile before continuing.
“All you need to bring is your painting supplies, I’ll pick you up after work. Does that sound okay?” Kaeya scooted his chair in as far as it would and Albedo leaned forward as Kaeya half-whispered.
“I can do that.” Albedo smiled and then sighed, “I have to get back to my office, but I’ll see you tonight.” The alchemist stood up and pushed his chair in. Kaeya sighed as well before he stood up. The Captain nodded as he looked around.
“But before you go, come with me for a moment?” Kaeya smirked as he held out his hand, Albedo softly smiled before grabbing it. The alchemist covered his face as Kaeya led them to a secluded spot behind The Good Hunter. Kaeya dragged Albedo so he was in front of him and leaning on the wall. Albedo removed his hand from his face and smiled.
Kaeya leaned down slightly and their lips grazed, “Can I?” He whispered on Albedo’s lips. The alchemist answered by closing the gap and their lips met. Kaeya could be here forever if Albedo would allow it, his lips were so soft. It felt so right when they kissed, but unfortunately, they have other things to attend to. Kaeya pulled away slowly and leaned his head on Albedo’s shoulder, the alchemist rested his hand on top of Kaeya’s head.
“Kaeya, we have to get back to work.” He quietly chuckled as he lightly pushed Kaeya off, the Captain refused to leave. He wrapped his arms around Albedo and pulled him as close as their bodies allowed them to, His head fit nicely in the crook of his neck. Albedo sighed and wrapped his arms around Kaeya’s neck. They stood like that for a short while, but it was all Kaeya needed to get through the rest of the day.
The last hour was finally upon him, he was sitting at his desk filling out his report. Once it got to the portion about his breaks, he left out quite a lot of detail when it came to his lunch break. Kaeya smiled to himself as he wrote ‘Went to Good Hunter and shared a meal with a co-worker.’ He then stifled a laugh as he stood up and headed to Jean’s office. He knocked once and she invited him in.
“Kaeya, do you have your report?” Jean sat at her desk and twirled a pen around her fingers as she smiled at the Captain. Kaeya nodded and handed her the paper. She scanned over it and checked the other side before placing it in a folder. “Have a good weekend.” Jean stood up and placed the folder in her filing cabinet.
“You too Jean.” Kaeya tried to hide his excitement as he rushed over to Albedo’s office. He knocked on the door and no answer. Odd, he thought. He knocked again and it was a girl’s voice who invited him in. He cautiously opened the door and his eyes met Sucrose’s, then glanced over and saw Albedo at his desk, he was asleep.
“Ah, Captain Kaeya. I thought you might’ve been Master Jean.” She stuttered as she stood in his way so he was forced to stand in the open doorway. “Mr.Albedo has been working really hard lately so I was just helping him tidy up since he needs his rest.” She was right, he has been working hard. Jean must’ve given him all of Kaeya’s extra work. Kaeya felt guilty all of a sudden. He pushed past the timid alchemist and sat at one of the chairs in front of Albedo’s desk.
“I’ll watch over him so you can head home.” Kaeya quietly said as he glanced over to Sucrose, who stood awkwardly as she walked closer to the Captain. She shook her head, then smiled.
“I really don’t mind, so please don’t worry about him.” She reached out to grab Kaeya’s arm, he pulled it away from her. Kaeya watched as she flinched, then awkwardly smiled.
“It’s fine. I need to ask Albedo something anyway.” His gaze drifted back to the sleeping alchemist, he felt his face soften as he looked over Albedo’s relaxed expression. He heard Sucrose sigh, he glanced over and saw her exit the room and softly close the door behind herself. Kaeya returned his gaze to Albedo and smiled.
Albedo’s eyes flutter open at the feeling of paper being pulled from underneath him. He sat up and made eye contact with Kaeya who simply smiled. He glanced around and saw his desk cleaner than it had been earlier that day and then looked towards the windows and saw stars spread across the sky. He stared at Kaeya as he realized he fell asleep.
“Sleep well?” Kaeya mumbled and continued to stack the papers on Albedo’s desk. Albedo covered his face before sighing.
“I’m so sorry Kaeya, I promise I didn’t mean to.” The way the alchemist’s voice wavered made Kaeya want to cry. He sat the stack of papers down and crouched so he was the same height as Albedo. Kaeya pulled Albedo into a hug and slowly stood up, he squeezed Albedo so they were as close as possible.
“I never said you did.” He whispers into Albedo’s ear. Albedo rested his forehead on Kaeya’s chest and listened to his breathing. “I know how hard you’ve been working.” Kaeya pulled slightly away and placed his hand on Albedo’s chin to pull his head up.
“Still, I imagine you had something time specific planned.” Albedo avoided eye contact, and Kaeya chuckled. Albedo refuses to look him in the eye.
“I mean, I did. But we can do that any day. I just really want to be around you.” Kaeya sighed, “Please look at me. I’m not even slightly angry.” When Albedo finally looked at him, Kaeya smiled and then pulled Albedo closer and their lips met. Kaeya smiled into the kiss when Albedo’s hands made their way around his neck. Kaeya could feel Albedo’s desperation as he deepen the kiss.
Albedo suddenly pulled away, and a whine fell out of Kaeya’s mouth. Albedo’s cheeks were dusted with a shade of pink and the way the moonlight shone on the alchemist was beautiful. Kaeya couldn’t look away.
“Wait.” Albedo stared into the Captain’s eyes, then smiled. “Will you be my boyfriend?” Kaeya almost choked on his saliva, then started to laugh. Albedo began to laugh as well, but out of confusion.
“What happened to one date?” Kaeya said between laughs. Albedo shrugged and stared at the Captain. He took a deep breath before continuing, “I would be honored to be your boyfriend.” Albedo smiled, it was the first time Kaeya had seen him smile like an idiot. Albedo closed the gap once more and Albedo smiled on Kaeya’s lips.
The duo spent another hour or so in Albedo's office before walking to Kaeya’s house. Albedo agreed to stay the night but fell asleep as soon as they arrived. Kaeya carried Albedo, bridal style, to his bed and tucked him in. When he settled on the other side, Kaeya caressed the alchemist’s face until he passed out himself.
The afternoon sunlight was bright as it shone into Kaeya’s eyes through the window. The Captain grumbled as he turned onto his back with his arm covering his eyes. He sighed as he stared at the ceiling, Kaeya glanced over and Albedo was gone. Kaeya sat up and pushed himself out of bed as he stumbled to the kitchen. Albedo was hovering over the stove, making what looked like a breakfast sandwich.
Kaeya stood behind the alchemist and wrapped his arms around Albedo’s waist and rested his head on his shoulder and sighed, “I would’ve preferred to wake up with you next to me.” Kaeya mumbled and Albedo chuckled as he offered a piece of cooked ham, Kaeya took it as he stood up and leaned on the counter next to Albedo.
“I waited and you took too long to wake up and I got hungry, so I helped myself.” He gestured to the ham that was cooking on the stove, Kaeya smiled. “I figured you’d be hungry once you were awake anyway.” Kaeya stifled a laugh.
“You are adorable. Thank you, I appreciate it.” Kaeya placed a kiss on Albedo’s cheek before walking over and pouring a glass of water. “Do you have plans later? Like around dusk?” Kaeya glanced behind at Albedo who placed his hand on his chin.
“No, but I do need to head back to headquarters at some point. I need to pick up some paperwork.” Albedo plated the breakfast sandwiches and sat at the table. Kaeya nodded, then poured Albedo a glass of water before sitting across from him.
They ate in comfortable silence, Kaeya finished off his water before speaking, “Would you meet me at the gate around four?” Kaeya leaned slightly closer to Albedo while he started thinking.
“I should be able to do that. Do I still need to bring my paint supplies?” Albedo smiled softly as he placed his hands on the table. Kaeya reached out and intertwined their fingers, and nodded. They sat like that for a few moments before Albedo pulled away.
“I really have to go. Thank you for letting me stay over.” He pushed in his chair and grabbed their plates and cups. Kaeya waited by the door as his eyes drifted to his wall of pictures, and stopped at the one with him and Diluc as kids in front of the Dawn Winery. He sighed, then smiled softly before turning his gaze towards Albedo.
Kaeya pulled Albedo into his arms and gave the alchemist a quick kiss, then hugged Albedo as tight as he could, “I’ll see you later.” Kaeya smirked as he stepped back and leaned on the wall. Albedo softly smiled as he walked out the door.
Albedo made his way to the knights' headquarters and into his office. He shifted through his papers, secretly wishing Kaeya didn’t stack them. Yes, his desk was a mess, but it was an organized mess. As he was looking he heard a knock on his door, he invited them in and it was Sucrose. He smiled as the timid alchemist approached his desk.
“What can I do for you, Sucrose?” Albedo stops rifling through the papers for a moment to look at her. She fiddles with her hands and is staring at the ground. Albedo places the papers back on his desk and gives her his full attention.
“Well.” She starts, and she takes a deep breath. “I was wondering if you wanted to go on a date with me?” She had her eyes closed as she spoke. Sucrose slowly opened them and continued to fiddle with her hands as she waited for his answer. Albedo was almost startled by what she had said. He never knew she felt that way about him, but thinking back on it he should’ve known. He tried to offer a kind smile before answering.
“I’m sorry Sucrose. I’m actually in a relationship with someone.” He quietly said and he began to nervously fiddle with his hands. The timid alchemist dropped her hands and had an expression that looked like betrayal.
“Is it Captain Kaeya?” She bluntly asked. Albedo tried to hide the surprise behind a small smile. He knew she could be straightforward, but he certainly wasn’t used to it. Albedo slowly nodded and she sighed.
“I see, I’m sorry if I troubled you. I’ll be on my way.” She hurried out of his office. Albedo stared at his door for a moment before shuffling through his paperwork again.
The day was going by too slowly if you were to ask Kaeya, he still had two hours before they were to meet. He decided to kill time at The Angel’s Share. The Captain opened the tavern door, and his smile almost immediately fell when he made eye contact with the Reconnaissance Captain. He took his usual seat and Eula walked over and sat next to him.
“Kaeya! I see your leg is doing better.” She laughed loudly. “You and Albedo get tired of each other?” She glanced around as if Albedo would be in the tavern, Kaeya quietly laughed.
“You act like Albedo comes here often.” He waves down Charles and ordered a half glass of wine, which earned a confused look from Eula.
“What’s wrong? Concerned how much you drink for once?” She chugs whatever she had. Kaeya sighed, he doesn’t know how Albedo feels about telling people yet. They should’ve talked about it.
“Well, I actually have a date in a couple of hours.” Kaeya sipped on his glass, then glanced over to his brother, who had his back turned. Eula’s jaw hung slack in surprise, Kaeya frowned at the Captain. She started laughing again, slapping his shoulder as she tried to catch her breath.
“Just who would want to go on a date with you?” Eula wiped tears from her eyes as she slammed her mug on the counter. Kaeya scoffed and then finished his glass of wine.
“I think you should go home, you are drunk.” Kaeya pushed her arm off his shoulder, she stared at him before sighing. She turned toward Diluc and asked for a refill, Diluc flashed Kaeya a knowing smile. So he was listening.
“Sorry, sorry. Seriously tell me.” She lightly punched his arm and he sighed as he stared into his empty glass. She waited patiently for his answer.
“Albedo.” He quickly said under his breath and looked away from Eula. He could hear her stifle a laugh before clearing her throat. She patted his back and he turned back towards her.
“I should’ve figured. Well, you better try your hardest.” Eula smiled, then looked into her mug. “I think I’ll head home now.” She awkwardly chuckled. Kaeya smiled and watched her stumbled to her feet.
“Would you like help?” Kaeya offered, She turned to look at him and nodded. He stood up and put her arm over his shoulder, she leaned most of her weight on him. Kaeya waved to Diluc as he walked out the tavern door.
Of course, Eula would have to live on the other side of the city. The two walked for what felt like an hour, but it probably was more like 20 minutes. As they approached her door, Amber walked over and stood in front of them her hands on her hips.
“Eula! I thought I told you not to drink so much today.” Amber scolded Eula, the Reconnaissance Captain avoided eye contact with her. Amber smiled at Kaeya and took Eula’s arm off his shoulder and placed it on hers.
“Thank you for walking her home, but I can handle it from here.” Kaeya nodded and watched Amber drag Eula inside. Kaeya sighed and headed back towards the gate as it was getting close to the time he was to meet Albedo.
As Kaeya approached the gate, his anxiety grew. He shouldn’t be nervous but he couldn’t help it. Kaeya stood under a nearby tree as he waited, he was early but he didn’t mind waiting. The Cavalry Captain closed his eyes as he listened to the noises that surrounded the city.
“You are our last hope” It felt like someone whispered into Kaeya’s ear. He frowned as he opened his eyes. There was no one nearby, he glanced around and saw Albedo walking over. He smiled and walked towards him.
“I’m glad you could make it.” Kaeya chuckled as he went to grab the easel out of Albedo's hands. The alchemist let him take it and gripped his bag straps.
“I wouldn’t miss it for the world.” Albedo smiled as he held out his hand. Kaeya grabbed it without thinking and led the way.
The walk didn’t take long, they arrived at the cliff overlooking Windrise. Kaeya stopped and sat the easel down and smiled at Albedo. The alchemist smiled so sincerely, it made Kaeya’s heart stop for just a second.
“You said you wanted to paint it, at dusk.” Kaeya gestured to the field and smiled to himself, before turning to face Albedo. He nodded and set a canvas on the easel and began to lose himself in the painting process. Kaeya enjoyed watching the alchemist get lost in his work.
The Captain sat on the rock that was near the edge and stared out at the tree and sighed. Albedo shifted the easel and began sketching Kaeya onto the canvas. Kaeya glanced over and they made eye contact, Albedo looked away as his cheeks flushed pink. The Captain laughed to himself and turned his gaze back to the tree. He could get used to this.
A couple of hours later and Kaeya felt light tapping on his shoulder, he must’ve drifted off to sleep. He turned and sleepily smiled at Albedo.
“Sorry I took so long.” He whispered as he crouched next to Kaeya, who simply shook his head.
“No, no. I didn’t mean to fall asleep, but I promise I wasn’t bored or anything.” He scooted over and Albedo sat next to him. He rested his head on Kaeya’s shoulder, the Captain rested his head on top of Albedo’s. The duo sat there for a couple of moments before Albedo broke the silence.
“I want you to see it.” Albedo stood up and dragged Kaeya to his feet. The alchemist led Kaeya over to the easel and presented it to the Captain. Kaeya felt weak in his knees. The painting was beautiful, the colors looked amazing, and the tree was perfect. Then his eyes drifted to the corner of the painting, there he was sitting on the rock. Kaeya brought his arm up to cover his flushed face. Albedo smirked as he pulled the Captain closer. Kaeya stared into Albedo’s eyes and smiled.
Kaeya pulled Albedo closer and their lips met yet again. This was definitely one of Kaeya’s new favorite things. Albedo laughed into the kiss as he put his arms around Kaeya’a neck and deepened the kiss. Kaeya’s hands traveled up Albedo’s back, pushing him closer so their bodies were flushed against one another.
Albedo slowly pulled away and glanced at his painting, then back to the Captain. “We should head back so it won’t get ruined.” Albedo mumbled as he kissed Kaeya once more before pulling completely away. Kaeya sighed then nodded. He grabbed the easel and the duo made their way back home.
Kaeya was happy with his life, he’ll bring up his issue with his father later with Albedo. Right now he doesn’t even want to begin to think about that, but he'll try to focus on what he wants not what his father wants, and what does he want? Well, that should be obvious. Kaeya pulled Albedo into another hug, holding him as tightly as he could before continuing to head home. Albedo softly smiled as he squeezed Kaeya’s hand. Everything was going to be just fine as long as Kaeya had Albedo by his side.
