Work Text:
“Save this world.”
The divinity in front of him speaks, and he knows it's a deity by the way his mortal body is paralyzed, a weak prey caught in the clutches of a predator, a skeletal hand, half his size or even more, with a tiny planet struggling not to succumb floating in the center (he knows what they look like, he used to live on one).
“I don't work for free,” is his reply, already used to his "no", being worthless.
“I didn't expect you to,” the body that at first glance seemed so stiff moved with the grace of a feline, its neck extending like a snake's. He took a step back, if the God saw it, they did not seem to give it the slightest importance. “Great works have great rewards, save this planet and ask me for whatever you want.”
Cale hesitated again, tempted to try his luck and attempt to retreat, but he had no intention of going through another test from a lunatic god enraged by his rejection, “Anything? What if I ask to live slacker life, without even the gods, you included, being able to bother me?”
The divinity laughed, hair moving away from their face without needing to touch it, “Look me in the eyes, child. Look me in the eyes and tell me if you still doubt what I can do.”
And even if he had wanted to refuse, his head moved by instinct, becoming instantly mesmerized, only feeling able to look and look and look and look and—
The blanket of strands as dark as a moonless night returned to its place.
“No catches, no fine print, no loopholes. All you have to do is become my Saint for as long as it takes to save them.”
The redhead was about to turn them down, but the memory of what he saw in those eyes made him pause, choosing a safer path, “Multiply my treasures tenfold every day it takes and we have a deal.”
The God didn't even hesitate, not taking half a second before giving their answer, “A deal is a deal.”
