In a cozy playroom provided by Neo-Queen Serenity, four young kittens lounged on plush pillows, surrounded by colorful toys, scratching posts, and comfy kitty condos. Their little paws and tails twitched with excitement as they gathered for their weekly meeting.
The oldest, Comet, was Luna and Artemis's firstborn. She had the same sleek fur as her mother, but her paws, ears, and tail were white. A shiny golden collar with a "C" dangled from her neck. Her younger brother, Asteroid, was the only male of the group. He looked just like their dad, with his green eyes and a collar marked with an "A."
The youngest was Diana, who was playful and quick to giggle. Their adopted sister, Elizabeth, had a striking indigo coat and ruby-red eyes, with a silver collar featuring a shimmering indigo gemstone.
Comet sat up straight, her eyes sparkling with excitement. “Alright, it’s time for the Kitty Club meeting to start! Before we talk about books, let’s check in. Asteroid, you’re up first.”
Asteroid stretched out and yawned. “Well, I’ve been practicing my chess skills. I even beat Sailor Mercury a few times, so I’m hoping the Queen will let me join the chess championship this year. Fingers crossed!”
“That’s awesome!” Comet purred. “I hope you get to compete. Now, Diana, what about you?”
Diana batted at a toy mouse beside her, her eyes bright. “I’ve been painting! Alexis helped me with some kid-friendly paint. I’m not as good as her mom, but I’ve made some really pretty pictures.”
“I bet they’re amazing! Elizabeth, what’s new with you?” Comet asked, her tail flicking with curiosity.
Elizabeth, always more reserved, paused. “I helped Ivy with her garden. She made sure all the plants are safe for us, and it was so fun getting my paws dirty.”
“That sounds fun!” Comet said, her whiskers twitching. “As for me, I’ve been practicing piano. I’m going to play at the music recital next week!” She beamed, proud of herself.
“Nice! Alright, time for books!” Comet continued, sliding two children’s books toward the center of the group: Bunnicula by James Howe and The Puppy Sister by S. E. Hinton. “Let’s dive in! Who wants to start?”
“I’ll go!” Asteroid said, wagging his tail. “Bunnicula was hilarious. I love how Chester the cat is always reading. It’s like he’s a serious scholar. I kinda get him, though—sometimes my imagination runs wild, too.”
“I think Chester's a little dramatic,” Comet giggled. “But yeah, Bunnicula is harmless. He just drinks veggie juice! I mean, that’s not even scary. He’s just different!”
“Right? The way everyone treats him like he’s dangerous is ridiculous,” Diana added, scrunching up her nose. “Poor bunny.”
Elizabeth gave a soft giggle. “Harold the dog was so funny. He’s not the sharpest tool in the shed, but he’s so sweet. And Chester wearing that cat sweater? Hilarious!”
“Definitely! It was so cute and funny,” Comet agreed. “And the idea of ‘staking’ a rabbit with a steak? Classic!”
Asteroid rolled his eyes but smiled. “Yeah, I’d love to check out the rest of the series. It seems like it’d be a fun read.”
Comet moved the next book forward. “Okay, The Puppy Sister. What did you think of that one?”
“I think Aleasha’s situation was kinda confusing,” Asteroid said, scratching his ear. “I mean, we can transform into humans anytime with the Silver Crystal. So we don’t have to go through weird transformations like she did.”
Diana giggled. “It was funny when she didn’t realize she was a puppy at first. I mean, her family cat had to tell her she was turning into a dog!”
Elizabeth perked up. “And when she finally says Nick’s name? So cute! I just love that part.”
“The whole family was so accepting of it. I think it was clever how they just made sure Aleasha was safe. And getting her to eat her veggies? Total mom move,” Comet said, her eyes shining.
“I think the funniest part was when Aleasha still had puppy instincts. Trying to catch a baseball with her teeth was too funny!” Asteroid laughed, flipping through the illustrations. “I mean, come on—who does that?”
“I’m just glad they found someone to help Aleasha after that Halloween mess,” Diana added thoughtfully. “Having a doctor to guide them was really smart.”
“Yeah, but they never talk about the paperwork. You can’t just become human and skip all that, right?” Elizabeth pointed out, furrowing her brow. “Where’s the birth certificate?”
“Good point,” Asteroid said with a snicker. “But, I guess that’s the magic of kids’ stories. They don’t worry about all the boring stuff.”
Comet nodded, her eyes sparkling. “Exactly! It’s all part of the fun. If we worried about real-life logic, we’d ruin everything! Fiction’s meant to be wild and free!”
Asteroid chuckled. “Alright, alright, calm down. We get it.”
Comet sighed dramatically. “Sorry, I got a little carried away. So, is there anything else we want to talk about?”
Elizabeth shook her head with a soft smile. “I think we covered everything. Let’s go to the palace library and pick out more books! Agreed?”
Everyone nodded in agreement, their paws twitching in excitement. The kittens scampered out of the playroom, ready for their next adventure. Despite all the high-tech wonders of the 30th century, there was still nothing like the magic of a good book.
