Breathe the Same Air

Summary:

Drabble. “I’m here to change my future, not my past.”

Work Text:

The trains were quiet at this time of day, just after rush hour. This was the best time to meet, not knowing whether to go into the city or into the countryside, for a while, at least.

They had to see each other again, even after everything that happened.

Momoe arrived first, standing behind the line, with people coming and going, her cellphone in her hand.

She was never this punctual, but this, this was different.

Kaoru? Where are you?

I'm at the train station.

When you get this, please get back to me ASAP.

The texts were delivered, but not read.

People passed her by, strangers looking at her with a glance, but most of the time, they paid her no mind, not in the slightest.

She didn't give them the satisfaction of a glare, not by a long shot.

She had to see him, to see Kaoru again.

"Well, well, I didn't think you were that eager to see me, but lo and behold…"

Momoe snapped out of her stupor, and turned behind to see Kaoru leaning against the wall with an amused look on his face.

"You said to be here on time, so here I am." Momoe shrugged and smiled. "I sent you a text or two."

Kaoru straightened up, and looked at his own phone. "Whoops, I forgot to check. I overslept, so I was in a hurry to get here." He laughed, and Momoe soon joined him.

"It is pretty reckless what we're doing."

"To say the least, Momoe."

"Well…I wanted to see you, Kaoru. Is that so wrong?"

Kaoru shook his head. "No, not at all. With this little adventure, I think it's going to help. I'm here to change my future, not my past." He said, firm intent in his voice.

Momoe nodded, and she walked up to him, reaching out and holding his hand with hers.

"So, what are we waiting for? If you're changing your future, so am I."

Kaoru chuckled, mirroring Momoe's action, his fingers curling around her hand.

"Like I said before, you're a lovely girl."

Momoe blinked, and she smiled warmly. "And like I've said before, you're a brave boy."

Kaoru grinned, and Momoe kept smiling.

The blaring horns announced the train's arrival, with the train emerging from the tunnel and stopping in its tracks.

The doors opened, the announcement over the speakers.

Momoe and Kaoru looked at each other, hands held.

They walked across the platform, stepping into the patiently waiting train, and over the threshold.

They can go anywhere now.
