you waited and watered my heart until it grew

The hanahaki disease has nearly swallowed Slime, but that won't stop Mariana from doing anything he can to save his husband.

Notes:

ok so basically this is like. an alternate chapter two. the other one is canon tho even tho it burns like the fires of hell. and id know ive been down there.

Work Text:

The indigo hyacinth drifted to the ground, petals stained with blood as the corners of Slime’s mouth turned up into a small smile. No. No, no, no, no, no. His beautiful green eyes were fluttering closed. “Slime? Slime! Are you... Please wake up! Please…please…”

A new found wave of strength entered his body as Mariana scooped up his husband effortlessly in his arms. He was so thin. He was so broken, so ill. Why hadn’t he told him? Did he still not trust him…?

He checked his locator as he kicked open the baobab door, which swung and hit a wall and a window of the glass rattling with reverberations from the powerful impact. His breaths were panting and heavy as he looked down at the device, noticing a jumble of names nearby spawn. He could make out BadBoyHalo’s name in the mix.

Good. He had some fucking choice words for him.

Grabbing his warp stone from his backpack and holding it tight, Mariana felt both himself and the dying ( no, he wasn’t dying, he was just unconscious- no matter what, he was going to wake up ) man in his arms lifted off the ground for only a moment, before being sat down in a familiar small room, four voices greeting his ears.

HELP! HELP, PLEASE!

All the heads whipped in his direction as he stumbled from the small room where the teleporter for spawn sat. They looked at him with confusion, before instantaneously noticing the bloodied body of Slime in his arms, vibrant green slimy skin beginning to melt and fall away from his form.

“SLIME!!”

“WHAT THE FUCK?!”

“BROTHER???”

“OH MY GOD–!!”

BadBoyHalo, Roier, Mike, and Etoiles all rushed towards Mariana, the fear evident to be plaguing all of their faces.

“Mariana, what happened?”

“Come on, we need to get Slime help!”

“Brother! Come on, wake up, brother!!”

“Pierre will know what to do, he’s always online- come on, we have to go!!”

Mariana could tell hands were shaking his husband, trying to take him from his grasp, but the Mexican recoiled, fear clouding his judgment as staggered slightly back from the others.

No vas a poner un puto dedo en mi marido , [You aren't going to lay a fucking finger on my husband,]” he exclaimed, a red vignette around his vision.

“Mariana, you have to trust us, we need to get him medical attention, and fast!” Bad exclaimed, getting a disgusted and enraged glare from the man, signaling that he had choice words for him. He looked to Roier, who had caring anxiety in his eyes. His friend, his closest friend, aside from the slime hybrid in his arms, whose breaths were getting more and more shallow with each one he took.

They were on the precipice. Mariana pushed his husband into his friend’s arms, tears overflowing from his eyes. He only mouthed a few words, throat choked with sobs he wouldn’t let out.

Por favor, tienes que salvarlo. [Please, you have to save him.]

Roier just nodded seriously, adjusting Slime’s crumpled position in his arms, before turning to the other three and pulling out his warpstone. “Pierre’s, NOW!” He demanded, and they all complied, warping away as well.

Mariana was standing there in a daze for a moment, mind fogged over. It was all so fast. It was all so much. Bad had just told him Slime was sick. He hadn’t mentioned the flowers, the coughing up blood, the dire situation he quickly grasped by glancing at the flower book out of the corner of his eyes.

Hanahaki. Hanahaki was what was killing his husband. Hanahaki was what was destroying it all. So he would destroy Charlie’s hanahaki.

He grabbed the warp point and teleported to Pierre’s factory, taking quick note of the multiple people gathered there. His communicator buzzed and buzzed in his pocket, but it wasn’t important as he saw Slime getting an IV attached to his arm and an oxygen mask put over his face.

“MOVE! FUCKING MOVE!” Mariana exclaimed, emotions overpowering as he pushed past the others. Their yelled questions fell on deaf ears, the static flooding his head. He stumbled and raced after the hospital bed, which was quickly being wheeled to a strange room in the building. He ran after it, skidding and smacking into the wall just as the security door was closed.

NO!” He screamed in rage, slamming his fists against the door, like it was a punching bag. “¡Déjame entrar! ¡Déjame ver a mi maldito marido! [LET ME IN! LET ME SEE MY FUCKING HUSBAND!]”

Tears flowed from Mariana’s eyes as he pathetically slid down the wall, the many sobs escaping his lips as his shoulders shook with enough force to knock down a building. He screamed into the hallway, ignoring the hands grabbing his arms, lashing out like a cornered lion. He couldn’t be consoled. He could hear a heartbeat in his ears- it wasn’t his, and it was slowing. And he couldn’t fucking allow that.

He scratched and clawed at the door, at the walls, the floor, until he wound up simply… crumpled. The man curled up into a ball right outside the entry, exhausted but refusing to move from his spot. He shook and quivered, ringing in his ears and his head, drowning everything out. He was numb, he was scared, he hurt so much.

Mariana lay there against the cold quarts until he returned to his senses, breaths heavy. The first thing he noticed as he regained it all was a blanket draped over him. A dark blue, so familiar, and for a moment he couldn’t place a finger on it- but then it clicked. His room, this was on the bed in his room. Not his room, but his room.

He stuttered to his feet, wrapping the soft blanket around himself, trying to peer through the door, but he couldn’t see anything. That is, until he stumbled around the side, and saw something. A large window, seemingly one-sided as the two people in the room paid no attention to him staring through intently, tears bubbling in his eyes.

On that bed, breathing shallowly, was Slime. He had multiple tubes sticking out of his torso, wearing a blue hospital sheet over his body. An oxygen mask was pulled over his mouth and nose, an IV tube with a pale green liquid that was very similar to the unconscious man’s slimy skin. A device was attached to his finger, and a heart monitor was visible- slow, but present, which was a massive relief.

Mariana put a shaking hand to the glass, careful to not make a sound as he wistfully looked down at his lover. He wanted to run in there, to kiss him all over, to hold him, to reassure him, but he needed to stay out here.

So he huffed in annoyance, slumping down in a chair. He put his head in his hands, a million thoughts racing through his mind, before he heard a voice to his side. “You alright, mate?” Asked a familiar British voice- peeking out from between his fingers, he saw Phil sitting in the chair on his left, clipped wings twitching slightly.

Mariana just groaned through closed lips, sitting back in his chair, completely worn out. The paler man was fidgeting with his hands, black nail polish in full show. “...Yeah, I can only imagine,” he said quietly, sighing. “Listen, if you two need anything at all, let me know, okay? I’ll try and help out as much as I can… I think all of us will.”

The Mexican removed his hands from his face, smears of tears coming off onto his palms. “Thank you, Phil. I think we will need some assistance.” He sniffled and wiped a couple more droplets from his eyes, getting a soft and caring smile from the other man.

“No problem, mate. We care about you and Slime.” Phil nudged Mariana slightly, the twos’ eyes being pulled over to the glass. “They’ve been fussing over him this whole time… I don’t think any of us are going to give up. His heart rate and the oxygen content in his blood has been going up over the last few hours, though.”

He heard the door open, and watched one of the people walk out, some slime on their gloved hands. Looking up to their masked face, he managed to make out the eyes of Pierre, blinking at the two men sitting in chairs.

“Slime is stable, but still unconscious. It’s good you got him to us so fast, any longer and he might not have made it. There were a lot of flowers in his lungs, and his throat is very damaged. He shouldn’t talk much, and he needs to drink lots of water. He’ll probably be out for somewhere between 3 hours and 3 days, but you can go see him, just be quiet and very careful.”

Mariana shot to his feet and walked over to the French man, before embracing him in a crushing hug, sniffling back his tears. “Thank you… for saving my husband…” he choked out, breathing shakily and deeply, feeling Pierre lightly hug him back.

“I wouldn’t let him die,” he proclaimed, before the two detached. The man put a six-digit code into the door and it swung open, allowing the other man to walk in.

The room smelled strongly of chemicals and flowers, both of which made him feel ill as they burned his nostrils. Slime lay on the hospital bed in front of him, chest rising and falling. He wore a hospital gown and there was some blood and slime splattered along the thin blanket that had been pulled over him.

His breaths were slow, fogging up the mask he wore over half of his face. His eyes were closed and his messy hair fell around him. His arms lay at his sides, palms facing the sky as they took in healing and strengthening potions which had been brewed specifically for this.

Amor… [Love…]” Mariana's voice was quiet as he sat down in a stool beside the bed, blanket falling from his shoulders, eyes filled with tears as he looked at his wounded love. “ Mi vida [my life] , please stay strong,” he choked out, shakily removing a glove and putting his left hand over Slime’s right.

He was hollow yet full of emotions, thoughts swimming through his mind at a thousand miles a second.

Lo siento [I’m sorry],” he whispered, rubbing his thumb on the back of the other man’s hand. “I shouldn’t have left you, I should’ve talked to Roier about those stupid allegations more. I don’t know why he said I was fucking around… I blew up at him, believe me.” He couldn’t help but cough up a laugh, but the microscopic smile faded as his husband provided no acknowledgement of his words, no response. It was expected, but it still felt like being gutted.

Mariana spun the golden wedding ring on his own hand, taking note of the silver one hanging from a chain around Slime’s neck. He was glad that Pierre and the other person hadn’t removed it- he might’ve blown up at them, considering how short his fuse currently was. However, having their fingers gently interlocked was like a breath of fresh air, grounding him in reality once again.

His eyes darted up to the counter, but he instantly regretted it. Scattered across on a white sheet were different kinds of blood-stained flowers- white irises, blue and purple hyacinths, white roses, orange poppies. Some whole, some just petals, but all there. Sitting next to them were bloody scissors and pliers, tweezers and small buzzsaws.

Mariana looked away, swallowing the bile that flared up in his throat, interlocking his fingers with Slime’s. His husband needed him right now.

Or was it the other way around? He wasn’t sure. His mind was foggy.

“...Do you remember what I told you? ¿Que sacrificaría mi vida por ti? [That I would sacrifice my life for you?]” He choked back a sob. “It’s even more true now. I’d do anything if you wake up, if you’re okay again. Mi vida, [My love,] I need you. I’m not sure if you need me, too…”

Mariana trailed off, clenching his teeth, strangling the thought. He wished he had brought that flower book that was on the counter of the house where Slime was staying, but he couldn’t leave his side. Maybe…

He pulled out his communicator, looking at the messages he had shared with BadBoyHalo.

BadBoyHalo: hey mariana can i tell you something

ElMariana: what is it?

BadBoyHalo: its about slime, hes really sick

BadBoyHalo: i think you need to check on him, you might be the only person who can help him.

Mariana remembers the pit in his stomach he got when he read that message.

ElMariana: ok thank you for letting me know

ElMariana: i will check on him when im next available

He had been available, he was just scared to see Slime. His cowardice, his stupidity, it could’ve killed his reason for living if he had arrived only a few minutes later.

BadBoyHalo: okay, you should do it asap tho

ElMariana: thumbs up :)

Mariana’s hand shook as he adjusted the device on his thigh, slowly typing out a message with one hand.

ElMariana: hey can you help me with something

BadBoyHalo: what is it? are you okay? is slime okay? what do you need?

ElMariana: i need you to get the book about flowers he had in his house

ElMariana: also i want to talk to you later

ElMariana: also also grab his glasses, he left them there

BadBoyHalo: of course, i’ll be there right away

Mariana popped a knuckle, placing the device into his pocket, before turning his attention back to Slime. He carefully traced a hand along the unconscious man’s cheek, feeling the light stubble and dryness of his skin. It panged his heart, his unhealthiness clear in the feeling of his skin and exhaustion printed across his face.

He placed a gentle kiss between the sleeping man’s eyebrows, watching them twitch in response to the touch. He was like glass, one wrong move could shatter him, could kill him. He had to be so careful, breaths quivering in his throat as he trailed his thin across the wrinkles on his husband’s face, before recoiling his right hand again, letting it fall to his side as the left remained intertwined.

“I love you, Slime… forever…” the words escaped his lips, but he didn’t care as he whispered them into the hybrid’s ear, tears trailing down his cheeks.

The door opened, and Mariana looked up, locking eyes with a nervous BadBoyHalo. He looked from the Mexican to Slime and back, holding a small bag in one arm. “...Oh my god,” the demon breathed, standing beside the sitting man to look down at the unconscious hybrid.

“Yeah,” was all he could manage to say, digging his fingernails into his own hand. “The book?” The taller man just nodded, pulling the book labeled ‘Flowers and Their Meanings’ from the bag, handing it to the other.

Mariana placed the book onto his lap, ignoring Bad’s eyes locked onto the counter of bloody flowers. He flipped through the pages with focus, viewing the translations for the different entries that caught his eye.

Hanahaki: An illness in which a person bearing an unrequited love coughs up flower petals until they die or their feelings are reciprocated. The disease can also be cured by a surgical procedure that removes the flowers, but this will result in them losing their feelings of affection and all memories of the person they loved.

Irises symbolize hope, wisdom, trust and valor.

Purple hyacinths mean you're seeking forgiveness, and blue hyacinths are tied to sincere care.

White roses are a symbol of love, appreciation, or sympathy, while ruby red roses are the true sign of love and usually symbolize passion, desire, and romance.

His hands shook and tears dappled the pages as they fell from his face, placing the book to the side. He turned all his love and attention back to Slime, thinking of the meanings. Hope, forgiveness, sincere care, appreciation, desire. Were these what he had been feeling?

Mariana choked back sobs as the grip on his husband’s hand tightened for a moment. However, he released it quickly, noticing how the sleeping man twitched under the squeezing clutch.

“I was angry at you,” he said quietly, looking up to Bad with an upset gaze. The demon looked back, hands twitching slightly as his fingers brushed across a blood-covered rose. “I was so mad when I realized it was worse than you had let on.”

The taller man’s form shifted uncomfortably as the other man’s chocolate brown eyes burned into him. “I don’t know why you didn’t tell me my husband was coughing up flowers and blood. I don’t know why you didn’t tell me that only I could fix it.”

Bad’s ears flattened back, eyes looking away from Mariana’s gaze. “I would’ve been more urgent, I would’ve dropped it all to get to him. But you just said he was ‘really sick’ and that I MIGHT be the only one who can help him. But…”

The Mexican sighed, shaking his head. “I can’t be angry at you anymore. It’ll cloud my mind. I’m still upset with you. I still want to punch you, but I need to stay here with Slime. And… you need to go.”

Bad winced but nodded. “For what it’s worth, I’m… sorry. I didn’t want to overwhelm you, and he told us you…” he gritted his teeth, watching Mariana’s head snap up.

Told you what? ” The demon swallowed heavily, turning around.

“You should just… ask him when he wakes up. I don’t want to say it if he doesn’t want me to say it.” Bad opened the door, looking over his shoulder for a moment. He opened his mouth to speak, but closed it as he looked down at the hybrid, before leaving the room with a click of the lock.

Mariana sighed in relief, looking down at his unconscious husband. Even as he drifted to sleep, sitting upright in that chair, he wouldn’t remove his hand from Slime’s.

Mariana groggily blinked awake two days later, having stayed here with his husband all of yesterday. People came by to offer gifts, condolences, and just talk to Slime- including Roier, who he exploded at again, and Mike, who was crying and calling the unconscious man his irmão [brother] while Pac comforted him.

He yawned and rubbed his eyes, making shapes on the back of the hand he held with his thumb. He looked down sadly at his husband, who was still sleeping. According to the others, his vitals were getting back to normal, so he’d hopefully be awake soon.

The book full of flower meanings lay open on his lap- he had been going through it before he fell asleep, reminding himself of the meanings of different flowers. Mariana had scratched out some of the names, like all the colors of hyacinths and irises, while circling others, like kovan flowers and poppies.

He rubbed his nose and set the book off to the side, reaching into a bag and grabbing some food he could eat for breakfast. He was lost in thought, staring at his reflection in the one-way mirror (he didn’t care who could see him through it).

He felt the sleeping man twitch slightly below his grip, and he looked down, eyes trailing across the chipped nail polish on his lover’s fingers, intertwined with his. They should both get their nails done once they’re out of here. It doesn’t have to be big- honestly, Mariana would prefer if it wasn’t. Maybe just sitting at home, painting each others’ nails while a movie plays in the background. That would be nice.

Slime turned his head on his pillow, making a little sound. Noises and small movements weren’t uncommon, but his head would always snap in that direction when they happened. He was setting himself up for disappointment, for failure, he knew that. But he knew that one of these times, that movement would be because he’d woken up.

His head was turned towards Mariana on the pillow, mouth slightly ajar while taking deep breaths, eyes closed and hand twitching as he dreamed of something. He couldn’t help but wonder what his lover was dreaming of as he trailed a hand across his cheek jaw, like he was made of porcelain and too much pressure would make him shatter.

Slime closed and reopened his mouth as the skin brushed against his face, making a small sound as the hand made its way to his chin. He blinked slowly, taking in every ripple in his skin, every dark eyelash, every scar on his body, every chip in his nails. He was a masterpiece to his wife who sat at his side, love filling his vision.

He closed his eyes and switched his left hand for his right, holding the hybrid’s hand. Mariana began to run his fingers gently and carefully through his lover’s fluffy brown hair, humming a song that nipped at the back of his mind, releasing it through barely parted lips.

“...Mariana?”

His eyes shot open and he looked down in surprise, the tears already building in the corners as he saw Slime’s eyes fluttering open, dazed and looking up at the figure leaning over him, holding back his sobs.

Hola, querido [Hello, darling]. You’re okay…” Mariana swallowed back the tears, a smile of relief washing across his face as he ran a hair through the shorter man’s hair gently.

“Where…” he croaked out, eyes darting around, but he was shushed by his wife, who cupped his right hand around his chin, the tears escaping his eyes, pouring and dripping onto his own clothes. He wiped his eyes, his somber grin still dancing across his lips.

Para cuando llegamos aquí, tus pulmones no estaban produciendo más flores. Ahora estás bien, el hanahaki ha terminado, ahora estamos bien. [By the time we got here, your lungs weren't producing any more flowers. You're okay now, the hanahaki's over now, we're okay now.]”

Mariana placed kiss after kiss onto his husband’s face, whose seat was half lying down and half sitting up. He could hear Slime giggling from below him, and the beautiful jingling sound just made him cry more. He was scared he’d never hear his laugh again… but he’s okay.

He pressed his forehead to the shorter man’s, both of them breathing heavily and slowly. The slime hybrid’s face was lovingly cupped, and he tried to do the same, wrapping his arms around his wife despite the wires and devices connecting to his body.

Thank god that at this point, all those bloody flowers had been removed from the room. If they were still there, he could only imagine what would happen, and none of the scenarios that popped into mind were pretty.

They stayed there, Mariana leaned over his husband, holding his face like he was the most priceless and most fragile artifact on the planet. Because he was - for him, Slime was irreplaceable, perfect, the most blessed thing to grace this cruel and unjust world.

He felt himself being weakly tugged down into the bed, and a laugh escaped his lips, wiggling in beside his darling, who watched him with lovestruck eyes. The hybrid placed his head onto his wife’s chest gently, feeling his warmth and heartbeat, even through the shirt.

Kisses were placed into his hair as he breathed steadily, taking in the smell of the other man, and the comfort of his presence. No words needed to be exchanged, though each of them had so many questions. Right now, they just needed to hold one another.

“...Why?”

Slime’s quiet voice broke through the silent blanket that hung over them, barely a whisper into the crook of his wife’s neck.

“What do you mean, why?”

The quiet returned for a moment after Mariana asked the question, hybrid biting his lip.

“Why did you…”

Slime slowly took another deep breath.

“...come back for me?”

Mariana heard a sob escape his throat as he looked down at his husband, at the dullness in his lively eyes, at the dazed expression he wore. His breaths were shaky as he enveloped the shorter man into a hug, the tears staining the fabric of his white shirt. It didn’t matter.

“Oh, mi vida [my life], I would come back for you no matter what. I’m sorry I didn’t come sooner. Tenía miedo, estaba enojado, estaba molesto, estaba triste. [I was scared, I was angry, I was upset, I was sad.] But you are mi esposo [my husband], and I am tu puta esposa [your bitch wife].”

The two couldn’t help but laugh slightly together as Mariana ran his hands along Slime’s back, who lay on top of him, making weak whining sounds as shapes were gently traced onto his back. He wanted to flirt with his husband, to make fun of his whines, to be handsy with his hips below his hospital gown, but he knew that wasn’t what the exhausted hybrid needed.

“I would never leave you. I could never leave you. We fight, but we love too.” He peppered the man in kisses where he could reach- the little taps from his lips were placed onto his husband’s neck and along his shoulder, a million little giggles popping from just behind him as he quivered under the kisses along his skin.

“Do you remember what I told you?” Slime hesitated for a moment, before shaking his head. He was lifted away from Mariana’s back as he sat up, the shorter man with his arms wrapped around the human. He squeaked in surprise as the sides of his face were cupped carefully and he couldn’t help but melt into it, straddling his crying wife.

“I love you with all my heart, querido. Te amo tanto que las palabras no pueden expresarlo. Sacrificaría mi vida por ti. Si tuviera más de una vida, las daría todas para demostrarte cuánto te amo. [darling. I love you so much words can't express it. I would sacrifice my life for you. If had more than one life, I would give them all up to show you how much I love you.]”

He repeated the words verbatim, because there was no better way to express it. Mariana could tell the translation was rolling in on Slime’s end, because he began to sob heavily, chest shaking and holding his wife’s steady hands with quivering hands.

“I…” he swallowed hard, irises shaking as he tried to find words that matched. The tears poured down the outside of his oxygen mask, which he grabbed at, taking the straps and tearing it off of his face. He let the saltwater fall down his cheeks, seep into his mouth, and be wiped away by the human’s gentle hands.

“You are…” Slime’s breaths were deep and quivering with his lungs as he looked deep into the chocolate waters of the other man’s eyes, seeing nothing but love. “Every part of…” he tried to speak, but he wheezed in pain putting a hand onto his neck.

Mariana wordlessly reached over to his bag, getting a book and quill, and handed it to his husband. He blinked and looked at him, thankfulness in his face, before lying down on top of him, beginning to write in the book. He looked up at the ceiling as the hybrid wrote, hands shaking as he scrawled for a good few moments.

Slime sat up again, still overtop of his wife, handing him the book with flushed cheeks. The Mexican smiled and took it, letting him nuzzle his head into the crook of the taller man’s neck, and he began to read what his husband had written out loud.

I love you too, I love you with all my heart. It feels like I’m going to overflow when I think of you, like I’m going to melt under your touch. It’s like when I’m near you, every droplet of slime in my body screams to be held by you. Whenever I’m holding you, I just want to sink my teeth into you, to lick and kiss you all over until you’re screaming my name.

Mariana looked to his husband with flushed cheeks. Slime just licked his lips. His cheeks got even more red, and he focused back on the book.

When we got married, it was amazing. Just me and you in a field, you in a black suit you took from Roier’s house and me in a flowy dress I made of slime. I remember you pushing me into the grass, holding me and looking at me like I was the most expensive thing in the world. I think that was the first time I ever felt loved.

Slime sniffled from his resting spot below his wife’s chin. Mariana softly planted a kiss atop his head.

We’d squabble, but that was normal. When you disappeared, I felt abandoned, alone. I didn’t know why you’d left me, I couldn’t think of a rational reason. Then Roier told me you were fucking other people, and I thought I saw the whole picture. I still don’t know why he said that, and I should have listened to you.

“Don’t worry, I yelled at him about it,” Mariana laughed, hearing Slime snicker as well.

Not even ten minutes after you left, I coughed up those first few flowers. I tried to act like everything was fine, I stayed in the house, I avoided people. I didn’t want anyone to be worried about me, especially not you. But it just kept getting worse and worse, until there were petals all over my house, I couldn’t sleep since I was hacking up so many, and blood splattered across the bathroom sink.

The handwriting noticeably got worse.

When Cellbit and Bad came over and saw the flowers, they said I had to speak to you. But I was scared- I know I love you and you love me too, but I was still scared. Bad knows we’ve always wound up loving each other again, he mentioned it, not knowing what was wrong this time. Then, Cellbit said something.

A sentence appeared to have been written, but it had been written over at least ten times, rendering it ineligible. Mariana would have to ask Slime about it when he could speak, or ask Cellbit.

Cucurucho came by, and it asked if I wanted the surgery. I thought about it for a moment, but I knew if I did it, I’d lose everything we have. Your laughs, the jokes, the fake arguments and the giggles that came afterwards, the hugs, the sex, the kisses filled with love. And I couldn’t take that, so I said no. I was just lying in bed at home, coughing up flowers, blood and slime, when… Well, you know the rest of what happened.

Mariana looked down to Slime, about to open his mouth, but the hybrid flipped the pages one more time.

So, I just want to say I’m sorry. You never were the bitch wife, I’m the bitch husband. And you can deny it, but we both know that all of our real arguments were ones I caused. I love you to the moon and back, Mariana. My world is incomplete without you.

The page ended with a tiny drawing of two figures, both with short hair and glasses. One had a flowing cape clipped to his shoulders and shining gloves, the other with 3 hearts on his shirt and two blobs of slime. They were holding hands, and hearts were doodled all around them.

Mariana smiled, before setting down the book, cupping Slime’s chin in his hand. Both of them had blurry vision, even with their glasses on- this blindness was caused by the tears that spilled down their faces.

“...I guess we need each other more than we ever realized.”

“Mhm.”

“...I love you.”

Yo también te amo , Mariana.”

Their desperate mouths locked into a deep and passionate kiss, falling back on the bed as they gasped for air each brief moment they pulled apart, holding each other like if they let go, the other would turn to dust and disappear.

When Jaiden and Cellbit walked in to check on them, they found the two figures holding each other in the bed, sleeping soundly. They sighed in relief, smiling to each other. They had resolved an argument they had once again.

They knew they had to stick together now, no matter how turbulent things got. Thoughts would plague both their minds of what would’ve happened if Mariana hadn’t acted fast, but in this timeline, that didn’t matter. Because Slime was smiling and holding his wife’s hand as they lay atop the wall while bright stars twinkled in the black sea above, not a flower in sight.

They were going to be okay. They’d stay by each other’s sides. They’d be okay.
