Work Text:

Relationship: Sirius Black and James Potter
Prompt: (Dialogue) “I regret nothing.”

As the door closed behind Professor McGonagall, James Potter and Sirius Black turned to look at each other with matching grins. They were stuck in detention for two weeks.

“I regret nothing,” Sirius stated.

“This was worth it,” James agreed.

After turning most of the Slytherins blue with orange hair, Professor McGonagall wasted no time in assigning them detention for each infraction she could. No one could prove James and Sirius were behind the prank, but everyone knew they did it.

“Do you think Regulus will forgive us?” James asked, flushing a little.

Sirius’ eyes narrowed as he stared at his best friend. Didn’t James fancy Evans? “With time,” he answered, shrugging.

Regulus would hold a grudge, but he would eventually forgive them. The grudge would be twofold – for pranking him and for “fighting his battles” or some rubbish.

Honestly, Sirius would do it again for his little brother. Regulus was too good for the Death Eaters and their Dark Lord, no matter what their family desired. And, most importantly, Regulus didn’t want to be a Death Eater. He wanted to be a professional duelist.

James looked a little nervous.

Staring at his best friend, Sirius decided he would stay out of it. He wasn’t sure how he felt. On one hand, he was excited because he liked the idea of James and Regulus together – his best friend and his little brother. But on the other hand, he felt Regulus could do better because Sirius knew his best friend.

“Leave me out of this one, Prongs,” he said, shaking his head.

A look of confusion settled on James’ face.

“I know you,” Sirius told him. “I recognize that dopey lovesick expression.”

James flushed, glancing down.

“I want nothing to do with your plans of wooing Regulus,” he declared, crossing his arms. “Just know if you break his heart, I’ll break your wand.”
