Work Text:
Light didn't fully understand why L always insisted on the two of them meeting in the same café so often.
Perhaps it was an easy thing to keep constant in their interactions- A familiar environment that wouldn't alter Light's behavior so that L could better track his body language patterns.
That didn't make much sense, though, because it wasn't like that was the only place they interacted. It's also not like it was a super convenient location for the both of them, as they both had to take a bus to get there. There were cafés that were within walking distance of them both, but L never wanted to go to those places.
What Light didn't know was that L had an eating disorder. Specifically, he had Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (or ARFID), which caused his consumption patterns to be largely dictated by things he deemed safe.
This café was good at keeping all of their foods and drinks more or less the same day-by-day.
One day, Light decided to cover the bill for the both of them, and also offered to give L's order to the person at the counter. This made L a bit nervous (what if Light messed it up and he got something that was wrong?), but he also figured it would be a good study of Light's interpersonal skills, so he allowed it, though insisted that Light write out the order beforehand to ensure it was correct.
Light wasn't sure why this, of all things, got L so nervous but he complied, writing out L's order from memory. When he got to the coffee part of L's order, he figured he should double-check just to be completely sure, suddenly concerned about messing this up.
"It's two sugars, right?" he asked. L allowed a small smile as he nodded. "And how many creams was it? Four?"
"Five"
"Five, yes" Light jotted down the note, halfheartedly wondering how L's sugar intake hadn't completely destroyed his health. "Here, is this correct?" he asked, holding out the notepad with the order written out. L looked over it carefully before eventually nodding in confirmation.
"Thank you, Light Yagami"
"Don't mention it"
