“Will I still be able to talk with you?” The words tumbled from Finney’s mouth. Robin bit his lip, he knew the answer and so did Finney but both of them couldn’t bear the truth. Robin’s muddy brown eyes slid to stare at the gray concrete, not wanting to see the look on his best friend’s as he confirmed what the two already knew.
“This is the last call, Finn,” Robin replied, his voice void of any emotion. Finney clutched the phone in his hand, slowly approaching the holder. A wave of grief nearly strong enough to knock him off his feet washed over him.
“It’s all you from here on out,” Robin added. The boy watched as Finney’s beat up sneakers slowly approached the holder, he was just an inch away now.
“I miss you, Robin,” The other boy replied. God, Robin thought as he shut his eyes closely. Why did this have to be so hard? He should be celebrating, be thankful, be grateful that he didn’t have to watch Finney die like Vance had watched Bruce. Be thankful, that Finney might- no, was: Finn was gonna get out of here.
Finn was gonna get out of here, his best friend, his little brother , was gonna get out of here. He was gonna do it for Robin, for Griffin, for Billy, for Bruce, for everyone The Grabber ever fucked with. “Then get out for me, use what we gave you,” Robin replied, standing strong.
“I will,” Finn replied. Robin nodded, slowly looking up at the other boy. They were mere inches away from each other but somehow still worlds apart. Robin slowly approached Finn, leaning against the wall right next to the phone.
“Goodbye, Finn,” The words slowly escaped his throat, holding underlying emotion. One, that if you scoured his monotone voice you might just be able to latch onto.
Finney latched onto in a second, it was not a sad emotion but that caused his heart to swell. It was there whenever Robin spoke about his dad, how much he admired and loved him. Finney closed his eyes, basking in the moment, the last moment he’d ever be this close to his best friend, to his brother.
“Bye, Robin,” the words sounded like a broken prayer. Yet, the prayer didn’t come from a broken man but a healed one. Finney placed the phone on the holder taking a deep breath as he said goodbye, any form of contact with his brother.
“What do we do now?” Vance asked, crossing his arms. He was sitting in the corner of the room, Griffin asleep in his lap. If they had been alive Robin might have made a snide comment about Vance going soft and the older boy would most definitely have punched his lights out.
Now, though, now that they were dead and Robin knew what he did about Vance and Griffin. He would still make the comment but Vance would still punch his lights out but there was a mutual understanding between the two boys. Robin fought to protect himself and to protect Finn. Vance fought to protect his mom, his little brother, and the boy he loved.
“Now, we wait,” Robin replied.
Vance immediately covered his little brother’s eyes, holding him close to him as The Grabber’s brother hit the floor with a thud. The curly haired boy quickly turned to look at Robin, he stood on the other side of the room lurking behind Finney.
“You better fucking hope, you’re boy can kill that bastard because if he doesn’t he’s gonna be unfucking recognizable!” Vance shouted.
“He will trust me,” Robin replied, not taking his eyes off Finn.
“Don’t feed into him, don’t be scared,” Robin mumbled to himself. He watched as The Grabber dragged the black dog over to the corner of the room. Finn kept a stone cold expression, not feeding into The Grabber just as Robin had always hoped he would when Buzz and Idiot number one and Idiot number two came lurking.
Finn rushed over to the area where the toilet was, The Grabber right on his tail. Robin didn’t let his brother out of his sight for even a second.
“Yeah, go Finney!” Bruce screamed, as he followed Robin, Vance and Griffin right behind them. The Grabber moved towards Finn, his foot falling into the hole in the ground with a bone breaking crack.
Bruce winced at the sound, “fuck, that had to hurt,” the boy mumbled.
“Good,” Vance replied, not taking his eyes off the scene in front of him. Robin watched with the biggest grin on his face as Finney did just as he told him. He raised the phone, took a fast step back and swung the phone hitting The Grabber right in the head.
“Lets fucking go, Finn!” Robin shouted, similar to how he had at the endless amount of baseball games he had been to. Sitting on the sidelines cheering his brother on as he had his moment. Griffin casted a look around confused, when he didn’t see Billy or Paper boy as he called himself, Griffin didn’t call him that though because Vance said it was stupid.
“Where's Billy?” Griffin asked, looking up at Vance. The curly-haired boy looked around, eyebrows furrowing, he was just about to respond telling his little brother he had no clue when the phone rang from the other room. Billy rushed over to the group of four as he did, a devilish smirk on his face.
All five boys were quick to exchange the same look as Finney held the phone to The Grabber’s face. “It's for you,” Finn replied.
“Welcome to the nightmare end of your pathetic little life,” Vance sneered, as Griffin laughed from right in front of him.
“You. Don’t. Have. Much. Time,” the boy stammered out, still laughing as Vance spoke up again.
“Today is the day, mother fucker!” Vance exclaimed.
Robin stepped forward standing behind Finn as he leaned down. “I can’t kill you hija de puta so Finn is gonna do it for me!” Robin exclaimed, putting a last bit of hope into his brother. Letting Finn know that he was here and he had all the faith in him. Bruce slowly drifted away from Vance, standing behind Robin placing a hand on the younger boy’s shoulder.
“Finn’s arm is mint!” Bruce exclaimed, dragging it out. A gut twisting crack sounded throughout the basement as Finney used the phone to break The Grabber’s neck, killing him.
“Holy shit,” Vance mumbled, laughing as he shook his head.
“Holy shit!” The curly haired boy exclaimed louder, this time.
“He did,” Robin spoke, breathlessly.
“Is he..,” Griffin trailed off, not able to say it.
Vance just nodded, smiling down at his little brother.
“Yeah, Griff, he’s dead,” Vance told him, wrapping his arms around the boy in a tight hug.
“I knew you could do, Finn,” Robin mumbled. It was over, Finn had ended it. No one would ever be harmed by The Grabber again, its over.
