“Luffy-ya, do you think this dress makes me look fat?”
Law stepped out of the fitting room, slowly twirling to show the dress to her fiancé. Luffy, who had been engrossed in a game of Genshin Impact, looked up from his phone and was met with the sight of Law in an elegant wedding gown.
“You look amazing,” Luffy said, his eyes lighting up with sincerity. His admiration was evident, as if every dress Law tried on was a new way to show how much she meant to him.
However, despite the compliment, Law didn’t seem convinced. She placed her hands on her hips and frowned, a reaction, that revealed her deepest insecurities. Her broad shoulders and height often made her feel like the dress didn’t match the image she wanted to project.
“No way," Law responded, frustrated. "You said the same thing about the last one. You must be distracted by that game right?. Do you even remember the last dress?”
Luffy chuckled softly, as they spent more time in the boutique, trying on several dresses, each outfit change brought them closer together, like each garment was a new chapter in their story.
According to tradition, the groom shouldn't see the bride's dress before the wedding day, but Luffy and Law didn't believe in such superstitions. For them, getting ready was a chance to share and enjoy every moment together.
When Luffy saw Law in a sweetheart neckline dress with a fitted bodice, he was captivated by her beauty. However, Law looked uncertain, adjusting the dress with a doubtful expression.
“The last dress had a flowy tulle skirt and lace details, like a fairy tale princess,” Luffy said, his voice full of genuine emotion. “You looked wonderful.”
Looked up, her surprise evident. Although she knew Luffy's carefree nature, his sincere response resonated deeply with her. Her struggles with her identity as a trans woman made her question every detail.
“Wow, looks like you can focus on something other than food for once,” Law said, with a wry smile, though her insecurity was still palpable.
“It’s because my wife is the most amazing person I’ve ever seen,” Luffy replied, standing up and wrapping his arms around her waist. “You’re already perfect to me, no matter what you’re wearing.”
Luffy understood Law’s insecurities, those that haunted her when she looked in the mirror with a new dress. He knew that her broad shoulders and height sometimes clashed with the delicate image she wanted to project. The dark circles under her eyes, a reminder of her inner struggles, also concerned her. But in Luffy's eyes, Law was a strong and beautiful person, who faced her fears with courage and determination.
“You're just saying that to avoid trouble, right?” Law said, though her tone softened slightly.
“No, I mean it from the bottom of my heart.”
Every time Law looked in the mirror wearing a new dress, her doubts became more apparent: the shoulders, the height, the shadows under her eyes, and the body mass in her arms and legs. However, for Luffy, each trait told a story of resilience and bravery. In her shoulders, he saw the strength that had protected them in times of need. In her height, he saw a presence that commanded confidence. In her dark circles, he saw the depth of someone who had fought hard to be herself.
To Luffy, there was nothing more beautiful than Law in her pure essence, with every imperfection that to his eyes only showed the incredible person he loved.
“Law,” Luffy said, taking her hand tenderly. “When I look at your face, I wouldn’t change a thing. You’re strong, kind, sometimes grumpy, but with a huge heart. I’m amazed by every part of you. You’re perfect to me.”
Luffy's words surprised Law, causing a warm blush to spread across her cheeks. Although Luffy usually had a quirky way of giving compliments, this time he said exactly what she needed to hear.
“I’m so grateful that my house caught fire when I tried cooking that night. Thanks to you being the doctor who treated my injuries, we met,” Luffy said with a big smile.
Law also smiled, feeling the connection between them.
“Oh God.” She laughed. “Only you could be happy about almost dying,” Law said, sighing. “That reminds me, I should probably ban you from the kitchen for that reason too,” Law joked.
“Oh, come on, it was five years ago!” Luffy replied, pouting in his defense.
“You set your kitchen on fire just by boiling water, Mugiwara-ya.”
“Torako, don’t be mean!”
Despite Luffy’s pout, Law smiled as she rolled her eyes, enjoying the moment.
“Well, I guess it’s time to try on the last dress.”
Law looked at the final dress she had saved for last. It was simple and unpretentious, with a design that didn’t try to stand out.
“You’ll look beautiful,” Luffy said with a warm smile. Law nodded, feeling a slight sense of optimism.
When Law changed into the last dress and looked at herself in the mirror, the dress was made of plain white fabric, with no embellishments or lace. The silhouette was straight and unstructured, falling to the floor without grace. With no decorative details, just a small satin ribbon at the waist, long sleeves, and a modest neckline, it looked more like a simple tunic than a special dress, lacking any glamour.
Law looked at herself in the mirror and gave a wry smile. Although the dress didn’t excite her, it was the most comfortable one she had tried on. It was so simple that she felt she couldn’t mess it up.
“Luffy, I think…”
When Law stepped out of the dressing room, her heart was racing. She expected to see her fiancé’s reaction to the dress. She anticipated finding him outside the dressing room, distracted by his phone while waiting for her. But when she looked out, she was horrified to find that Luffy wasn’t there. Anxiety seized her immediately. What if Luffy was having second thoughts about marrying her? What if he had decided to cancel the wedding?
Dark thoughts overwhelmed her like an unrelenting tide. “Maybe it’s because we won’t be able to have children… or because I’m a grump… or because I’m not pretty enough. Maybe now he realizes it would be better to marry a model like Boa Hancock,” Law thought, biting her thumb as a treacherous tear threatened to fall. Desperation was reflected in her eyes as she felt the knot in her stomach become unbearable.
Suddenly, Luffy’s voice came from inside the dressing room. “What about Hancock?”
Law felt a mix of relief and terror upon hearing his voice. “Luffy! Oh God, don’t mess with me like this…!” She was about to give up, to run away in desperation, when she saw Luffy enter the dressing room. But her distress faded momentarily when she saw Luffy wearing an elegant wedding dress.
“Luffy, why the heck are you wearing a wedding dress?” Surprise and confusion filled her words.
Luffy, with a confident smile and a playful gesture, proudly patted his own chest. “To show you that you’re more beautiful than anyone here.”
Luffy’s words were a balm to the anguished Law, and a sincere, relieved laugh escaped her lips. The tension in her body dissipated in an instant.
“You’re crazy.”
“Crazy about you,” Luffy replied with a smile radiating affection and warmth.
Law couldn’t help but blush at Luffy’s tenderness. However, when Luffy asked if she had chosen a dress, Law’s smile faded, replaced by a look of concern.
“Yes, this one. What do you think?”
Instead of offering the expected support, Luffy said, “I don’t like it, you look bad.”
“Huh?”
“I don’t like it at all.”
Law was stunned, her eyes wide. “W-why!?” she stammered, expecting praise, but instead, a deep disappointment enveloped her as she tried to understand Luffy’s reaction. “The dress is plain… it doesn’t have a special neckline… no details… it should be…”
“That’s exactly why,” Luffy interrupted with a serious but loving gesture. “It doesn’t do you justice. You’re way too amazing for this boring dress. And I know you don’t even like it, I know you, Law.”
The sincerity in Luffy’s words surprised her deeply, and Law had to swallow hard. Her heart was pounding, touched by Luffy’s devotion and care.
“Luffy, I…”
“Here,” Luffy said, extending a new dress towards her with a warm and understanding smile.
Law looked at the dress Luffy offered her, her eyes widening in amazement. “How’d you know…?”
“I saw you looking at it,” Luffy said. Although he was usually distracted, he had caught the admiration in Law’s eyes when she saw that dress. He had seen the spark of longing in her gaze and knew she was in love with that design from the first moment.
Law hesitated. “Thank you, Mugiwara… I appreciate the gesture, but I’m not sure. I don’t want to ruin the dress, and maybe I should consider a suit…”
The dress Luffy was offering was a classic and elegant wedding dress, made of white satin, with a neckline that exposed the shoulders. The top had a crossover design that accentuated her figure, and the wide, voluminous skirt gave it a majestic air. It was beautiful, but Law feared she wouldn’t look as she imagined.
“Well, since one of us has to wear the dress, I’ll wear it at the wedding,” Luffy said with a playful yet sincere determination.
Luffy’s words surprised Law, and a sincere laugh escaped her lips once more. The image of Luffy in a wedding dress was so absurd it made her laugh heartily, relieving the accumulated tension.
“You must be joking. You wouldn’t dare.”
“I’m wearing a wedding dress now, so don’t doubt for a second that I would do it just to see you smile.”
Law smiled softly, caressing her fiancé’s cheek tenderly. “You’re such a cheesy fool.”
“But I’m your cheesy fool,” Luffy replied, winking with a mischievous sparkle in his eyes.
Law laughed again and looked at him affectionately, feeling a deep love and gratitude. “Okay, but if I look bad in that dress, don’t doubt that I’ll wear this ugly dress I’m wearing now.”
“Then I'll just get a dress like that for myself and wear it on the big day, just to see you smile at our wedding,” Luffy promised, his voice full of genuine emotion.
Law felt grateful and a little silly for having doubted Luffy for a moment. She knew she had found someone who loved her unconditionally, and that was what truly mattered. With the new dress in hand, she looked at herself in the mirror once more, and this time, instead of seeing her insecurities, she saw a strong and loved woman, ready to marry the man who meant everything to her.
“Maybe I should try on this dress,” she said with a smile.
“Doesn’t matter if you wear a tux, a dress, or even a potato sack. You’ll always look beautiful to me,” Luffy assured her once more.
“I know,” Law replied, kissing him softly on the lips. “I know now.”
And with that, Law knew she had found the right person to spend the rest of her life with.
