Work Text:
When Ed opened his eyes the sun was already shinning through the window, but he was not in a hurry to get up. The bed was soft and comfortable and even though the body curled up against his side was making him feel way too warm, there was nowhere else he would rather be at that moment.
“Hey, Iz, do you know what day it is?” Ed asked softly.
He knew Izzy was awake, he had probably been since the first moment the sun had started brightening the sky, as usual, but the man simply grumbled something unintelligible as an answer.
“It’s September the first, mate!” Ed said excitedly
“Are you sure?” Izzy muttered, more coherently.
Ed chuckled. Of course the little shit would remind him about that one mistake forever and ever.
“Are you never going to let him forget that, Izzy?” Stede mumbled, drowsily.
“No,” Izzy replied sharply, but Ed could feel him smiling against his chest as he said it.
Stede huffed and turned to curl up more tightly around Izzy, putting his arm around the older man’s waist, and Ed remembered the first time Stede had done that. Izzy had almost jumped out of the bed, shocked by the sudden show of affection. Ed smiled softly at the memory, seeing how comfortable Izzy looked between them now.
As he snuggled closer to Izzy, some noises outside let Ed know that the crew was already on deck, much earlier than usual.
“Is the crew already working? That’s weird,” Izzy said, noticing it too.
“It’s the anniversary party,” Stede mumbled, still sounding very much asleep. “It’s supposed to be a surprise, but they’re making so much noise.”
“You’ve just given it away, Stede,” Izzy replied, amused. “I don’t think the noise is much of a problem now.”
“Oh… no, no, no, no!” Stede said, suddenly sounding much more awake. “You have to promise to act surprised when we get out! Please!”
Ed managed to hold his laughter, but Izzy didn’t even try and his laugh echoed in the cabin.
“Oh, don’t be mean, Izzy,” Stede said, slapping Izzy’s ass playfully.
“Oh, you’re already in the mood for that, Stede?” Ed teased him. “Isn’t it a bit early?
“Oh, you’re both-“
A distant but loud cry of pain stopped whatever Stede was going to say to them.
“Oh, my god, oh, my god, oh, my god!” Lucius was yelling outside.
“I told you not to move, pendejo!”
“Babe, are you alright?”
“Do I look alright??”
“Calm down, everybody, just CALM DOWN!”
Stede sighed as he sat up slowly on the bed.
“Well,” he said calmly. “Time to do some captaining, I think. No need for you to get up just yet, my loves, I’ll handle this.”
Stede disentangled himself from them with practiced ease and got out of the bed, giving Ed and Izzy a light kiss before leaving them.
There was a bit more room on the bed now, but Ed simply held Izzy closer and buried his nose in the first mate’s disheveled hair, humming happily. It was quiet and peaceful and Ed was starting to think that maybe they could get a bit more sleep when a shriek that could only come from Stede startled them.
“It’s not as bad as it looks, Captain, I swear!” was Roach’s answering yell.
There was no need to doubt the ship’s doctor, Ed thought, but still, he didn’t feel like they should ignore the whole thing, just in case.
“Time to get up, do you think?” Ed asked softly.
“Probably, yes.”
Ed leaned down for a kiss and then they got up slowly, ready to face the chaos of a new day on the Revenge.
