Arei couldn’t read dragon brains. Of course she fucking couldn’t. But this one was probably wondering what the fuck they were doing.
And honestly? Arei couldn’t blame her. She had asked herself the same question a billion times during that trip.
“Where the FUCK are we?!” Arei shouts against the wind. She shields her eyes from the rain, but it doesn’t do much good, especially because Arei had to practically cover her entire face to do so. “I can’t see shit through this fucking storm!”
“Do I look like I can?!” Whit argued.
No, but Arei needed someone to complain to.
Whit said something, but the wind carried his voice away.
“What?!” she shouted.
“WHAT IS THAT BEHIND YOU?!”
And holy fucking shit it was an aquatic dragon. Arei screamed and scrambled towards Whit side of the boat. He caught her, confused, then looked up.
“Oh, we are so forked.”
“We’re about to die and you can’t even fucking swear?!”
“DOES IT MATTER?!”
“I GUESS NO—“
She interrupts herself with another scream as their canoe lurches upward. The dragon held it in one claw and touched the other to an egg strapped to her chest. Arei’s horror numbed just a little. Was that a baby harness?
“It’s gonna eat us! It’s gonna eat us Arei I never got to meet the love of my lifeeee!!” Whit whined.
Yeah, well, according to you, I’ve met five of them, Arei bit back. “Calm down, stupid, she’s clearly not eating us!”
“Definitely not!” Whit counters sarcastically, “Just carrying us to our safety! Like all dragons do! I just love saving the lives of delicious snacks!”
“Snack and a meal,” Arei corrected.
“You’re right. Eggs with blueberries.”
Arei goes to slug him. She misses completely as suddenly they’re free-falling. Arei lands with her ribs hitting the edge of the boat. Whit gets a face full of sand.
The water dragon stared at them.
Ignoring the pain in her lungs, Arei grabbed Whit’s hand and pulled him to his feet. Together, they made it together to the safety of the island’s small forest.
The dragon never followed them.
