Work Text:
It was the middle of summer, and Mabel Pines was salty. Not just any kind of salty—extra salty, like the pretzels Grunkle Stan sold outside the Mystery Shack on a hot day. But this time, it wasn’t the heat or some annoying tourist making her cranky. Nope, it was her brother. Dipper.
Somehow, in the span of a few months, Dipper had morphed from her dorky, awkward twin into a giant. He was four inches taller than her now! FOUR! Inches! And to make matters worse, he was still growing. Dipper was out here living his best tall person life while Mabel was stuck in “fun-sized” territory. It was unfair!
Mabel flopped onto her bed, flailing her arms in frustration. “Ugh, seriously! I’m the fun twin! I’m supposed to have at least one edge in this sibling rivalry, and now Dipper’s strutting around like a human giraffe! What gives?” She sat up and glared at a poster on her wall. “I mean, how am I supposed to be the cool one when I can’t even see over the second shelf?”
But it wasn’t just the height that had her worked up. No, Dipper was also acting super suspicious lately. He kept sneaking off, grinning that mysterious grin of his like he was in on some cosmic joke, and when she came back from her last sleepover, his side of the room smelled like fancy perfume. What the heck?!
Mabel gasped dramatically. “There’s only one explanation for this: Dipper has a girlfriend!” Her eyes widened in mock horror. “I mean, he’s the one with the weird birthmark and the oversized nerdy T-shirts! How did he manage to pull that off while I’m sitting here, Mabel Pines, Queen of the Glitter Galaxy, and still single?!”
She grabbed her notebook, flipping to the page full of ideas to uncover the identity of Dipper’s mystery girl. “This is so unfair! I’m basically a walking party, and he’s got this big secret girlfriend? What am I, chopped liver?”
Mabel hopped off her bed and marched into the living room, where Dipper was lounging with a book. “Hey, lanky! Spill the beans! Who’s the mystery girl? Is she, like, a secret agent or something? Or is she just a girl who likes nerds?”
Dipper looked up, eyebrows raised. “What are you talking about, Mabel?”
“Oh, don’t play dumb! You think I can’t smell the perfume from a mile away? I could probably follow it to her secret lair!” She grinned, hands on her hips. “So, are you going to tell me, or do I have to launch a full-scale investigation?”
Dipper rolled his eyes, smirking. “You’ll have to find me first, Detective Pines. Good luck with that! But there is no girl.
“Challenge accepted, tall guy!” Mabel shot back, already plotting her next move. “Just you wait. I’m onto you, Dipper. Your days of secrecy are numbered!”
Fail One: The Tree That Failed to Be Grenda-Proof
Plan one was the classic stakeout. Mabel, Candy, and Grenda crouched behind a very tiny tree outside the Shack, binoculars at the ready. They were about as subtle as a firework in a library.
“There he is!” Mabel whispered, her eyes wide. “He’s sneaking out again! We follow him, and BOOM, mystery solved!”
Grenda tried to shift behind the suspiciously undersized branch. Bad idea. The poor plant let out a loud creak and then gave up on life entirely, snapping in half as all three girls tumbled out of it in an ungraceful heap.
Dipper, who had just walked out the door, glanced over at them, completely unfazed. “Uh… Mabel?”
Mabel quickly stood up, brushing leaves off her sweater. “Oh, hey, Dip! Just… hanging out with nature. You know, appreciating the flora!”
Candy, still half-buried in the foliage, waved a twig. “We are one with the forest.”
Dipper sighed and continued walking, not even bothering to ask. “Alright, have fun with that.”
Fail Two: The Not-So-Invisible Floaties Debacle
Next was Operation Pool Spy. The plan? Blend in as floaties and eavesdrop on Dipper from the pool. Genius, right?
Wrong.
Mabel, Candy, and Grenda were all decked out in inflatable animal floaties: Mabel with a dolphin, Candy with a duck, and Grenda with a shark that barely fit around her. They paddled slowly towards Dipper, who was lounging poolside, texting away.
“See anything suspicious?” Candy whispered, her floatie squeaking every time she moved.
Mabel, trying to adjust her dolphin, caused a tidal wave in the shallow end. Candy’s duck flipped upside down, and in the chaos, Grenda’s floatie collided with Dipper’s chair, knocking his soda into the pool.
Dipper blinked down at them as they floundered, trying to flip themselves back over. “Uh, guys? You know you don’t need floaties in two feet of water, right?”
Mabel popped her head up, trying to salvage the situation. “We’re, uh, practicing survival skills! You know, just in case of a… pool emergency!”
“Right.” Dipper, clearly unimpressed, stood up and wandered off, leaving them to their soggy defeat.
Fail Three: The Over-The-Top Psychic Ruse
For this one, Mabel decided to up the ante. If she couldn’t figure it out herself, maybe someone with psychic powers could. And who better than Mabel “Mystic Mega-Mind” Pines? Armed with a glittery crystal ball (bowl, turned upside down with Fairy Lights in it), a tinfoil turban, and a flowing cape (glittery purple blanket she brought from California), she set up a “psychic booth” in the living room.
Dipper, suspicious as always, walked into the room, saw the booth, and raised an eyebrow. “What are you doing?”
Mabel leaned over the crystal ball dramatically. “I am Mystic Mabel, and I have seen visions… of your future girlfriend! Come, sit, and I shall reveal her to you!”
Dipper blinked, unimpressed. “You know I don’t believe in that stuff, right?”
Mabel, undeterred, waved her hands over the ball. “Shush, shush, shush. Let the spirits speak through me… they are saying… oh! Her name starts with a… P! Or a B! No, wait, an S!”
Dipper crossed his arms. “Uh-huh. And does she also love cryptids and mysteries?”
Mabel paused, then sighed. “Maybe the spirits are broken today…”
Fail Four: The Instant-Boyfriend Test
After three failed attempts, Mabel decided it was time to get direct. She invited Dipper to a casual hangout, acting totally innocent as she brought up the topic of relationships.
“So… Dip… anyone special in your life right now?” she asked, trying to keep her voice casual as they both sat at the picnic table.
Dipper, without missing a beat, shrugged. “Nope, no one special. Why?”
Mabel squinted. “Really? Not even, like… a girlfriend?”
Dipper took a sip of his soda, still cool as a cucumber. “Nah. Totally single.”
Lies. So many lies.
Mabel leaned in, narrowing her eyes. “Liar. I know you’re hiding something.”
Dipper met her gaze, totally unfazed. “I’m not hiding anything. Maybe you’re just overthinking it, Mabel.”
She crossed her arms. “Right. Because you’re such an open book.”
He shrugged again, leaving Mabel seething. He was too good at this.
Fail Five: The Brainstorming Sleepover—With Pacifica
Okay, this one was a surefire hit. Mabel called in reinforcements—her girls Candy, Grenda, and a few more friends. They were going to brainstorm and strategize like professionals. If anyone could crack the mystery of Dipper’s girlfriend, it was her squad.
Everyone gathered in the attic, pillows and snacks everywhere. Except there was one awkward guest: Pacifica Northwest.
“Uh, hey, Mabel?” Pacifica said, looking uncomfortable as she stepped into the room. “What exactly is this sleepover about? You didn’t really say.”
Mabel grinned, slinging an arm around her. “Oh, we’re just figuring out who my brother’s mystery girlfriend is! Should be fun, right?”
Pacifica froze. “Wait… what?”
“Yeah, we’re brainstorming and trying to catch him in the act! Any ideas?” Mabel asked, oblivious to Pacifica’s rising panic.
Pacifica chuckled nervously, tugging at her hair. “Oh… um… maybe I’m not the best person for this…”
“Pssh, nonsense! You’re here, you’re in it now!” Mabel tossed a notepad to her.
Pacifica caught it, her face practically glowing red. “Uh… okay…”
Meanwhile, the rest of the girls were going full conspiracy mode, drawing charts, throwing out wild theories about who Dipper could be dating. Pacifica sat there awkwardly, trying not to make eye contact.
Fail Six: The Final Fail
The next day, Mabel was determined. After the sleepover debacle, she felt she was so close to cracking the case. Dipper was sneaking off again, so naturally, Mabel followed.
This time, she was going full spy mode. She followed him through town, ducking behind bushes and lampposts, hoping to catch him meeting up with his mystery girlfriend.
Finally, he stopped by the old water tower. Mabel peeked out from behind a tree, heart racing.
But instead of meeting some mystery girl… he was just standing there. Alone.
Dipper sighed and turned around, clearly aware of her presence the whole time. “Mabel, I know you’ve been following me for days.”
Mabel froze, caught mid-sneak. “Whaaaat? Me? Following you? Nooo. I was just, uh, out for a very stealthy walk.”
Dipper crossed his arms, looking utterly exasperated. “Look, you’re not going to stop until you know the truth, right?”
Mabel grinned, ready for victory. “Exactly. So just spill it, Dip. Who is she?”
Dipper sighed again. “Alright, fine. It’s Pacifica.”
Mabel blinked, caught off guard. “Wait… what? Pacifica? Pacifica Northwest? But… but she was at the sleepover!”
Dipper rubbed his temples. “Yeah. That’s kind of why it was awkward for her.”
Mabel’s eyes went wide as the realization hit. “Ooooooh… well, that makes so much sense.”
A wide grin spread across her face. “Oh my gosh, Dipper! This is amazing! You and Pacifica? That’s like, a power couple situation!”
Dipper rolled his eyes, but a smile tugged at his lips. “Yeah, yeah. Just don’t tell anyone, alright? We’re still figuring things out.”
“Your secret is safe with me!” Mabel declared, bouncing on her heels. “But you have to tell me everything! Like, how did this even happen? Was it romantic? Was it at sunset? Did you two share a milkshake?!”
Dipper chuckled, shaking his head at her excitement. “It wasn’t anything like that. We just started hanging out more, and it kind of… just happened. It’s nice, actually.”
Mabel clapped her hands together, practically vibrating with glee. “This is the best! I can’t wait to tell Pacifica! We should totally hang out together soon! Like, the three of us! You, me, and Pacifica!”
Dipper laughed, his earlier tension melting away. “Okay, but let’s take it slow. I don’t want to scare her off or anything.”
“Slow? Pfft! We’ll plan the ultimate fun day!” Mabel said, excitement sparkling in her eyes. “First, we’ll go to the mall, then maybe some mini-golf, and end with a movie night back here! You’re gonna love it, I promise!”
“Only you would think of a schedule for a day out, Mabel,” Dipper said, amusement lighting up his features.
“Hey, I’m just making sure you don’t forget the fun!” Mabel replied, winking. “And let’s keep this between us for now! I want it to be a surprise for her!”
“Deal,” Dipper agreed, feeling lighter than he had in days. As he watched Mabel bounce with excitement, he felt a warmth spreading through him.
After a moment of chatter, Mabel paused, a sly smile crossing her face. “Hey! Let’s text Pacifica and set up a hangout! I can drop hints about a ‘mystery surprise’ to make her curious!”
Dipper raised an eyebrow, impressed. “That’s actually a great idea.”
Mabel grabbed her phone and started typing furiously, her excitement bubbling over. “This is going to be epic! We’ll make it so special for you two!”
Dipper felt a mix of nerves and anticipation. “Thanks for being so supportive, Mabel.”
“Always!” Mabel said, her face lighting up. “Now, let’s get planning! I want this to be a day you’ll both remember!”
As they brainstormed ideas together, Dipper’s heart swelled with gratitude. With Mabel’s enthusiasm and Pacifica’s friendship, he felt ready to embrace whatever came next.
With a summer filled with laughter, love, and unforgettable moments ahead, Dipper couldn’t wait to see where this new chapter with Pacifica would lead.
